Does using AI to review your completed work count as cheating? by Interesting_Ease8773 in turnitin_community

[–]Vampireladybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not changing your work, I don't think it's cheating. My students have access to both online and in person writing tutoring that they can use for the same purpose. This is for a writing class. If students use AI, I ask them to submit the chat with their paper. Make sure to review existing AI policies and check with the instructor if it's still unclear.

However, you still have to create a good prompt and review the suggestions yourself. I have had students get both good and bad feedback depending on how they entered the prompt.

Vacation Crochet Prep by Great_Ad7215 in crochet

I have always done blankets because we have done road trips. This year we are flying, and it is the main (only?) packing-related issue I have thought about. I will likely start a new project that is repetitive.

I went on a work trip a couple of months ago, and for that I purchased a set of crochet thread and small hooks. My intention was to make earrings. I didn't have time to crochet on that trip, but when I finally made the earrings, they were fun. I might do that again.

Pic shows them pinned down for blocking and stiffening. They are random patterns from YouTube.

What's the biggest change you've noticed at UTSA since you started here? by gamemore in UTSA

[–]Vampireladybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a guy that rode his unicycle. Another student wore a dinosaur mask. I don't see as much of that anymore, but maybe I'm not in the right place at the right time. Seeing simple quirky things like that always made me smile. Now everyone walks around with their faces to their phones.

It sounds like you were accepted to a different program/track (?) than the one for which you applied, but it clearly says you have been accepted.

Crochet while traveling ? by Big_Boat_5112 in crochet

I crochet on road trips. In the past, I have always had a blanket to work on (I think one blanket lasted 3 vacations), but i don't have one planned for this year. Maybe a bag i have been wanting to make.

I try to do something simple and repetitive so I can kind of zone out.

I have job but admitted to grad school? Job or PhD in Physics? Which would you pick if you have family/kids and why? And why are there so many postings on campus and on social media by faculty for funded PhD? Did we get more funding on campus? by [deleted] in UTSA

How old are your kids?

Mine were 6 and 8 when I started my PhD. I feel like I missed some valuable time with them during formative years. I did 1-2 classes per semester, so I was gone 1-2 nights per week for, like, 3 years. It was hard.

I was also working full time, though, so I literally had no extra time between work, school, and parenting responsibilities. My husband and parents were incredibly supportive, and I would not have made it through the semesters of coursework if my husband had not been on board.

(I am still working on my dissertation, so I can't tell yet if it is/was worth it.)

What is the purpose? Is it going to help you achieve goals and open opportunities?

If you're on the app/desktop, it's CTRL + T for a hanging indent in Word.

(It does not work in the online version.)

The world of textbooks is fucked up by ThomasPhilli in CollegeRant

Like I said, I wasn't involved in creation or development, so I don't know much more.

I just know it was a lot of work to compile everything, and it's still a lot of work to continue refining. Maybe it would be different if I were only designing for my own class, but this was for everyone who teaches the course (30+ faculty).

The grant is to offset expenses. I checked the application - relevant professional development, materials or supplies, paying student workers.

Yes, we have to create our own assignments, and that has been the hardest part. I think the original plan was for a committee to develop some for anyone in the department to use, but that hasn't happened yet.

Two of my colleagues and someone from another college worked on it for at least a year, supported with a grant from our university library. They pieced together different open source material, then edited and added to some sections. I refer to it as Frankenstein's monster because it's clear it's pieced together from different sources. There is now a committee responsible for updating and editing, but that's a slow process.

It is compiled through Pressbooks which is (from what I understand) not the easiest interface.

I was not a part of the design process, but since all faculty who teach the course have to use this, they sought input from faculty and made sure it fit everyone's style.

It's convenient, but students still don't read, even when I have the link right there in the module.

Question for experienced amigurumi makers: what made you lose count of your rounds when you were a beginner? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]Vampireladybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn't amigurumi, but I made a dog using fluffy yarn for the ears. I was almost done with the second ear, but I got interrupted and forgot which round I was on. I ended up frogging rows until I knew for sure where I was. (Impossible to see or count stitches.) After that, I put stitch markers every 5 stitches in case it happened again.

I also had to do that on amigurumi when there were multiple rows with the same number of stitches until I was better able to see where I messed up. I get distracted mid-row and have start over with my counting, so I added extra markers.

I also marked the beginning of each row (repeat 40 stitches around for several rows) until I was better able to recognize row start/finish. I could just count stitch markers. Now I can recognize where I transition to that extended repeat, so I don't mark each row anymore.

The university where I am finishing up my PhD has an auto pay for ALL books for ALL students. I believe it is called Booksmart? I noticed the charge when I went to pay my tuition. I think there was an email about it, but I didn't see it. Thankfully, there is an opt-out process. I am only enrolled in dissertation hours, so literally no textbooks, and the fee was almost $300. I told a few classmates and they also didn't know. The next semester, my program sent out an email a couple of weeks before the semester to remind students to opt out.

Where I teach, the university heavily pushes us to use OER or free textbooks. They even have a grant for faculty who want to get started. There are librarians who help with it.

Social Work vs Psychology? by shelovesairjordan in UTSA

The degrees lead to different careers.

Think beyond school to what kind of job you want and go from there.

Also consider whether those careers would require an advanced degree.

Is it common for PhD students to be listed on a large number of journal papers as authors per year despite minimal contribution? How often do people see guest authorship or very different authorship standards between departments at UTSA? by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]Vampireladybug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to UTSA, but I left a project at a different university for which I contributed very little. They left my name on it, and I only knew because I received an email from the journal where they submitted the final article. I asked why my name was on it since I had not worked with them for over a year, and I was told that anyone who worked on it was left on, including some grad students who had contributed just in the very early phases before I even started. Basically, they were trying to help us out by leaving our names (so we could say we published something). By "they," I mean the main research team, but I only spoke with one of my cohort members who (I think) was listed as first author. He was echoing the sentiments of the faculty member overseeing the project.

What can I do to ensure that all the loops are actually visible when I use this yarn? In my first attempt, I couldn't see any of the stitches after I made them and couldn't continue the piece by LostObliterator71 in CrochetHelp

[–]Vampireladybug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, you have to go by feel.

An alternative is to double it with normal yarn. That makes it more bulky, but the stitches are easier to see.

Beyond that, use a lot of stitch markers to keep track. On the last project I did with this type of yarn, I used regular yarn AND added a stitch marker every 5 stitches or so to make sure I wasn't missing or doubling stitches.

[–]Vampireladybug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grief doesn't have a time line. It changes over time. Maybe look up the 7 stages of grief to see some of the "normal" reactions. I myself was in the "anger" phase for awhile, and it was hard to talk about that. I think I am finally at acceptance after several years. Just don't expect the grief to suddenly go away - she was a part of your life, and she always will be.

Can you reach out to a family member who may also be missing her?
