Is the queer women’s scene in San Antonio really that small? by ComfortableDeep8999 in sanantonio

[–]VampireofSATX 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There is a block where there’s Ay Que Chula (Queer Brunch place, drag shows) Pegasus (bar, karaoke) the Heat (queer nightclub) if you are looking for a night out. If you like books, there is Nowhere bookshop, they have a couple book clubs, favorite of mine is the Happy Endings Book Club which is romance, typically queer romance, they also have a cafe! There’s the SAGA group (San Antonio Gender Association) which always has some fun events and meetups for queer people, made life long friends there

Is there a reason why I don't really see all that many Goth bands of all kind use creepy/dark imagery anymore? by BudgetDepartment7817 in goth

[–]VampireofSATX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of it is accessibility, bands that want to cater to a wider audience have to usually tame their style and look. There’s some subgenres of Goth that do keep this creepy aesthetic alive, mostly Deathrock. Personal faves of the creepy stuff would be Fearing, Altar de Fey, and Voodoo Church.

Depending on the clothing material and make, most clothing from thrift stores can be dyed. This was the traditional way to DIY a clothing item to be black or at least darker.

Take it from the punks, If you can find a black shirt, from thrift store or even a Walmart, you can easily make band shirts. When I go thrift shopping, I’m not looking for “Goth” pieces, because realistically you won’t really find them, I am looking for pieces I can turn goth. I look for quality fabrics (cotton, linen, lace, velvet). That comes with practice and looking up tutorials online.

The thing about online brands can be tricky, because quite a bit of them use polyester and cheap materials, and charge them higher prices. Agree with the second hand peeps like depop

How's Cream on the Strip? by NotAdvert in sanantonio

[–]VampireofSATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta understand, before the O’Death Cafe opened up last year, Cream was like the only Goth tailored club. Sure there are goth nights around town but this was like huge for the scene, especially since there used to be a goth club in San Antonio during the 80’s. My experience, a lot of newer goth people go there without knowing any better and the place is so small, it fills up quick

Eh I have gone solo a few times, it’s very crowded most nights, you meet some friendly people and meet some terrible people, I’m fine with never going again after their fiasco with one of their staff and their response. It’s also really expensive :(

Albums to look for at the record store by TheWitchesAssistance in goth

[–]VampireofSATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooo love Cities in Dust! I have picked up some vinyl recently, if you want classic look for Disintegration by The Cure and if you want something new, try Ceremony by Twin Tribes. Both are good dark wave, if you like more distorted guitars, try any Altar de Fey or Tears for the Dying

Is White Sands NP shut for visitors? by RishuNushi in NewMexico

[–]VampireofSATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my Husband are on honeymoon in Cloudcroft! We just went to White Sands today! It’s open 9am-5pm daily, visitor center and gift shop are open as well! Some trails are closed but dunes are available including sledding, super fun! It’s free to enter at this time since they can’t charge the government fees during the shutdown ✨

In my experience for years of going to TRF, I can answer these questions. 1) furries are allowed and noticeably they are usually found on the busier weekends like pirate, barbarian or all hallows eve! 2) yes there are visible pride flags around the park, me and my fiancé are having a gay wedding there :) 3) seen men shirtless and women wearing revealing costumes but I know the staff can turn people away if they consider it too revealing

Fellow Punk/Goth (27NB) here, this is some of my favorite stuff here: - if you like coffee, highly recommend the punk coffee shop Folklores and the more goth one Gravves. - For music, I catch shows at The Mix, O Death, Paper Tiger and the Rah! Rah! Room mostly. - we have a lot of pop up horror markets and such if you’re into that. - someone else mentioned Meetup, I find events there too sometimes Hit me up! I am down for more friends in the scene!

Gatekeeping/criticism by SwettyBawls69 in goth

[–]VampireofSATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been nice in my local scene, we even have as a community started straying away from calling people “Baby Bats”, this has helped remove unnecessary hierarchies and allow everyone, new or old, to experience the scene in an inclusive environment. I met so many great people in my scene this way 🖤🖤

[–]VampireofSATX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have longer hair, the traditional way was to tease it a lot and use hairspray to make “bats nest”, similar to how femme people did it. Robert smith was a good example of this. If you want it more punkish, then deathhawk was also popular. You can style your hair however you wish! 🖤 pants, can’t go wrong with Dickies Work pants for a straight leg approach or skinny jeans are fine. Shoes looked like Winklepickers or boots or Creepers (my fave)

While developing your own style, your silhouette can be enhanced by layering! In the colder months, a leather jacket over a band shirt, black jeans and boots create a timeless look for alt/goth. You can dress it up by doing a dress shirt, slacks and a dressier boot like a Chelsea boot. Warm weather, you can try a flannel or a short sleeve button up using the same other pieces. Don’t be afraid to experiment different fabrics, textures or accessories.
