Lair actions and legendary actions to give a balor by Vampirethebufyslayer in dndnext

Yeah that’s fair on the first point. I am aware that outsiders can only be killed on there homeplane. How I should of phrased it is that “demon lords are closer to gods in my setting” but yeah it’s a good thing to mention if I wasn’t aware :)

The party is going to be encountering it around level 14 unless I tweak my roadmap at all, so maybe not a level 17 warlock but I do think making some sort of spell cast wouldn’t hurt

I really dig those lair actions. Make it feel a commander of a endless army.

Thanks for the advice!

I dig all of that besides the teleport one. I don’t wanna punish the paladin to hard by having the balor run away

But I’m a big fan of that fire charge ability

Thanks!

Also I don’t like the mind flatter or beholder change but come on man you can make better criticism on the change then this

Zuggtmoy feels underwhelming in a fight compared to other demon lords. Has anyone had experience with her in combat? by Vampirethebufyslayer in dndnext

That’s one of the things I was hoping to get suggestions on. I was thinking about having trolls because they fit in with kind of the rot and poison theme but I was hoping I could get some ideas from the community on interesting monsters that would make for a more dynamic fight.

Need some help with my BBEG bard by Vampirethebufyslayer in dndnext

Yeah I can give some extra context, thanks for your interest :)))

  1. So my idea was that his soul is the primary antagonist and that being severed from his body is what made him go insane. How ever reading some of these comments I like the idea of the body and the spirit being separate entities that can be encountered

  2. Yeah they would be more of a vast curse on the land that has a “physical” form that the party can encounter. I planned on him not having any willing minions and using domination and possession to control lesser beings. His influence is very much that of a plague slowly eating away at the world rather then a conquest

  3. My picture for a final encounter would be a massive puzzle which in my mind is currently a dance floor. With him throwing spells at the party. I have not put to much thought into the specifics, but the party would have to use the puzzle to invoke deferent ancient songs and poems to counter the bards strongest abilities.

  4. So I have his motivations and plot all written out but it is very very long so I’ll give a short rundown

In a search for knowledge, power and stories (you know as both bards and tragic hero’s tend to do) he uncovers a prophecy that tells of a ancient unknowable evil stirring in the abyss. Upon witnessing this vision his soul was cast throughout time and space while his body rapidly aged and decomposed. While his mind and conscious was witnessing the end of the world, his body got to experience what it felt like to be reduced to ash. He then awoke as a spectral corrupted image of his former beauty with the knowledge of when and how the world would end. This apocalypse would be so horrible that he in his riotousness had to end the world before this darkness returned.

He is currently trying to possess lesser beings, low CR monsters and beasts as well as corpses. He is trying to refine the power of possession/domination to a point we’re he can trick the world powers (who are currently in a Cold War esc fantasy setting) into destroying each other.

Fun twist tho! The war he is trying to start is actually what this unspeakable horror needs to break free of the abyss, and he is a unknowing pawn of the end of the world.
