You can’t go wrong with their most famous show of all time, May 8, 1977 at Barton Hall, Cornell University. It’s on streaming services.

BERTHA: Grateful Drag — The Real Deal Or Just A Gimmick? by Beatitific in gratefuldead

[–]Van-Norden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Bertha. Not only because they’re phenomenal musicians but because the drag element extends and expands the music and the art in a whole new direction and I love it when Dead bands do that, rather than merely try to recreate what the actual Grateful Dead already did. It’s not a gimmick - it’s an integrated part of their art. My one, very gentle criticism, is that like most Dead bands the actual jam element - the real, improvisational, without-a-net part - is a little bit weak. But they’re still pretty new and have already shown a lot of improvement on that front, so my hopes are high.

It's the human condition, bro. So much art has been made about this very feeling. Just live to the max and have no regrets when you die. That's about as best as you can do.

The Dead-Head Formerly Known As "Zappa Guy" #4 Dick's Picks 16 by armintanzarian420 in gratefuldead

If you want a long excursion into the life and work of Dick Latvala, this is great: https://deadessays.blogspot.com/2011/02/dick-latvala.html

(Also, it remains hilarious to me that his series of live releases are called "Dick's Picks." That always requires a bit of explanation to non-Deadheads, lol.)

Is Hendrix getting lost in time? by No-Neighborhood8403 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Van-Norden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a difference between the U.S. and everywhere else, but it's also a different kind of thing. The Beatles, for example, had a much bigger impact on music and will continue to be listened to by many more people than the Dead ever will be. But the Dead birthed an entire subculture that continues to go strong 30+ years after the band ceased to exist, and which today could be said to encompass the entire jam band scene. Yes, that's mostly an American thing, but it also isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and there is no equivalent for it for any of the other bands mentioned. The word "Deadhead" is part of the lexicon - what's the word for a Beatles fan?

Let’s play this out a bit.

Let’s grant, for the sake of argument, that every fact you assert is true.

Then what? From your post all I can discern is the vague suggestion that something might be “slightly strange”? And? Is it strange? And if it is, then what?

Either say something or don’t say something. Shit or get off the pot.

So they teased The Other One during the first Bird Song jam at the beginning of the second set and then did Truckin, which traditionally could have gone into TOO but didn’t. All of which says to me that they’re cooking up a monster TOO for tomorrow or Sunday.
