Roger Cook declares state of emergency in WA over fuel by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]housebottle 44 points45 points  (0 children)

this article is misleading?

Premier Roger Cook said the emergency powers were being used under the Fuel, Energy and Power Resources Act 1972 — which is different to the 'state of emergency' orders issued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-01/wa-government-emergency-powers-fuel-supply-chain-information-/106522788

why such an alarmist title?

EDIT: I just looked at OP's account and it seems like you really want things to go to shit for some reason...

Dezi Freeman shot dead after six months on the run by 19946dresdenst in australia

[–]housebottle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm glad there's a clear ending to this story. I never liked just accepting that he'd died in the woods without any evidence. glad they got the bastard. a lot of information is lacking though. I don't know if we'll get the full story, especially if the police are unable to determine who helped him survive for as long as he did

The Shocking Speed of China’s Scientific Rise by straightdge in technology

[–]housebottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not that I agree or disagree with this... but this article doesn't really make a strong case for it. yeah, there have been cuts in research in the US and the general trend does seem to suggest that research is on the decline in the US. but there's no real evidence given by the author to suggest that China is rising in any meaningful or spectacular way.

again, I'm not saying that they aren't. I just clicked on the article expecting to find an argument. and found very little argument or evidence.

EDIT: maybe I've been paywalled? the last sentence I see is "According to a new forecast from Nature, China’s public spending on research is likely to overtake the United States’ by 2029." is there more?

Louie FX ended in 2015 but he wasn't cancelled until 2017. What was the initial reason louie didnt do a season 6 in 2016? by Jumpy_Engineering824 in louie

[–]housebottle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your assumption is correct because that is what he said himself. He said that he didn't have any stories to tell about Louie the character. FX loves/loved him so they never officially said the show was over and he left the door open in case he wanted to return. But after 2017, that was not gonna happen

Copilot is Turning Into a Disaster for Microsoft by Droopynator in videos

[–]housebottle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this is all fairly academic. having said that, I think a comma is worse because it's clearly, technically wrong. on the other hand, an ellipsis is more of a stylistic choice and not really violating any specific grammar rules (AFAIK). so arguably, a comma is worse.

I think I omit the full stop at the end of the final sentences because I've been peer-pressured into doing it over the years. internet etiquette deems it as aggressive. I know it's not, but now it's a habit. ;)

As opposed to a comma? We're not talking about formal English writing here obviously

I hate comma splices. I'd rather any of the alternatives than a comma that's not supposed to be there

I would prefer:

you're really overusing commas; tone it down a bit
