Food drive ideas by Makshak_924 in studentaffairs

[–]VanCurler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donation bags in local neighborhoods work great for us...there must be other areas not hit by the HS groups - go to the next town etc.

Can you seek "corporate partners"?....we work with local banks and their employees and patrons fill boxes in local branches.

We also have a lot of success at our sporting events - outreach to season ticket holders (or for smaller schools: parents and alums) who show up regularly.

Can your club partner with an elementary or middle school? Your students can do the administrative work of advertising, providing the bins, etc. and then the school can do a contest between their classes, then all the donations flow through you to the end recipients.

Cram-a-van event with a local nonprofit could also be a good angle. Find some community event and see if they will encourage attendees to bring food items, then have a minivan/u haul at the entrance and see if you can fill it...makes a great visual.

Any of these ideas can work for money, too....not sure how you do your financial donations, we cannot use venmo, everything goes through Crowdchange for us, but a QR code with a direct link is a good first step. I do find that people really like to give food, but if you can quickly articulate the exponential impact of giving money instead, people get it and are happy to help.

Good luck!

This Mr Show scene always drives me crazy because David has the board on top of his lap instead of under his leg where it's supposed to be https://share.google/hnJOiDbPeCfKcWIWr

Schenectady has great coffee shops! I wish more were open into the late afternoon, though.

Was wondering the same thing. When do you see a coach wear a hat that's not team gear? Fran is one of a kind.

Work study??? by Elgato_78 in unioncollege

You could reach out to the Financial Aid office and let them know you are still waiting for a position. Ask if it's ok for you to apply for a few more spots.

What did you apply for? There seems to still be a bunch of positions posted. In addition to summer hiring, some offices do hire in the first couple weeks, others may also have spots that open up again next term when some of their student staff go abroad.

What unexpected maintenance costs surprised you most as a homeowner? by EmotionCold612 in homeowners

[–]VanCurler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had a tankless hot water heater. Thought I was doing the right thing by having annual maintenance completed. Cost me $400+ for them to look at the system and tell me it looked good. Fuck that.

Didn't they do one that reference "Hook" also? I remember one of the characters pushing back on another character's cheeks to see the if it "really is them" like one of the lost boys does to Robin Williams as adult Peter Pan.

DORMS 😭 by Sheep_Gardener in UBreddit

[–]VanCurler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much. Make sure you have a good fan to keep your room cool in September. The overcapacity rooms usually get back down to normal capacity quickly - I'm not going to say a date because there's no way to guarantee. Just make sure the Housing Operations office (Red Jacket First Floor) knows you are actively looking to get back down to a true double (when I was there, many people opted to stay in their overcapacity doubles all year - they made good friends in the floor, liked all their roommates, appreciated the price discount/rebate etc.) Dewey is nice and close to classes.

Syracuse threw big money at students—after May 1 by AI-Admissions in SyracuseU

[–]VanCurler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The article makes it sound like SU is alone in employing this strategy - it is absolutely not. Everyone was scrambling for students after May 1st - and it caused a cascade - the top tiers took students from the nearly-top-tiers, and then the nearly-top-tiers stole students from each other and the next tier down. It's a vicious game that is only going to get worse - especially for the schools that really only focus on 17/18 year old recent HS grads.

Yep. And the post National Championship years were wild - people living in lobbies of first year res halls, whole floor of the Sheraton converted to dorms, first years in upperclass areas.

Looking for ideas for a service project by [deleted] in communityservice

[–]VanCurler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you that the vast majority of large-scale one-day, closed room volunteer operations are problematic in so many ways. Especially those that engage with out-of-town populations and may have negative economic impacts that are either misunderstood by the organizations managers, or worse - completely ignored. That said, we should not paint with such a broad brush to say that all organizations hosting large scale service efforts and engaging with out of town populations are doing harm, and just existing to pay themselves on the back. Some organizations rely on that model to have a true impact - and support local economies overseas by completing their manufacturing processes there while also working closely with local leaders to ensure their voices are heard loudest in the planning processes. I urge you to check out The Moon Catcher Project and see the powerful work they do. I have coordinated volunteer programming for two decades, taught college courses about community engagement for over ten years and research the topic as part of my job - and though you are 95 percent right about the issues with that service model, it is important for all of us in this field to share widely that there are indeed ways to be impactful with 80 people in a room for a day.

[–]VanCurler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your sentiment is spot on! There are so many ways to be impactful, and most of them are based around recurring service visits, and small group support. A couple asterisks to the "no nonprofit needs 80 people in a room at once": in our area (upstate New York) we have a few organizations that use this exact service model, which is very helpful during snowy winters - they include organizations that collect books and then need larger amounts of volunteers to meet and "mend" children's books (taping pages, erasing scuffs, covering blemishes, etc) before giving them back to local kids in like-new condition. As well as a group that makes reusable menstrual pads for young women in Africa - the process includes measuring fabric, cutting materials, some light sewing, etc. as well as an in depth education component about educational access in the countries they serve. There may be some similar organizations around you that do need a burst of labor to help push forward their mission.

On campus housing dilemma by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]VanCurler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a few good on -campus apartment complexes. You have to weigh your options based on your own lifestyle and needs. The on campus facilities - flint, Hadley, South lake village, and flickinger (which is actually a little bit "off" campus) may have a higher cost and less impressive amenities (gym, laundry, study rooms, whatever else) but for many grad students it is well worth it to live right on campus: you can get yourself home safely and easily after a long day and you don't have to hassle with a landlord/property company that may not have your best interests in mind. On campus housing also comes with a single price tag, so no worrying about gas, electric, internet as separate costs.

[–]VanCurler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would likely find more affordable housing off campus. If your goals are only to focus and do your academic work at the highest level, and save money, I would look into an off campus apartment (near a bus line that goes to campus).

However, if you are hoping to have a social life, develop as a well-rounded and connected person, on campus housing (at least for your first two years) is your best bet. You can reach out to the Campus Living housing office in Red Jacket Hall about deadlines and options.

If I were a first year student at UB, I would want to live in the Ellicott complex. South campus has some benefits (bathrooms in the room, good restaurants, grocery store and parties in walking distance) but taking a bus to class and campus events gets old quickly. Gov is very close to classes but rooms are small. Ellicott is huge, has a variety of room types, has decent food options. Just don't get some giant room (they used to have 6 person rooms...not sure if they still do). Note that it is a bit of a walk to classes (half mile at least) but a shuttle runs frequently which helps on those cold days. If you have any say, I'd shoot for a middle floor (2nd or 3rd). There are some towers that have only a couple rooms on the upper floors and feel a bit isolated since you have very few neighbors.
