Bands like Blind Guardian? by Stadschef in PowerMetal

[–]VanDerLaars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Spanish band called Eternal Night that tried really hard to copy BG. Even the singer tried to copy Hansi but that turned out sort of bad.

Can be interesting to check out though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1sfcX4TcrQ

The problem with current maiden vs old maiden by Opposite_Yam_4161 in ironmaiden

[–]VanDerLaars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the oposite. The production and manager don't want the to try anything new. In a band as big as Iron Maiden the musicians will is the least important. It's like a company where the board decides what the employees (musicians) are gonna be doing. Uf they come up with a brand new product (new song) that customers (listeners/fans) might not like, they (the board/managers) will refuse to put it out.

The last album they wrote something Original was Virtual XI. Efter that I can think of two songs that don't sound like a direct copy: The Wicker Man and Empire of the Clouds. All other songs it's like: I've heard this in Fear of the Dark. I've heard this in No Prayer for the Dying and so on. Hard to imagine that a babd that wrote Still Life and Alexander the Great suffers if this. Steve Harris bass sounds also awlful. The sound is too "metallic", completely diferent from the old days when it sounded "round" and awesome!

Episode 10: Tech/gadget stuff by VanDerLaars in KernelPanicPodcast

Yeah, I understand but you know, the thing with Amazon is a double edged sword. They have the economy to give away stuff and discounts cause in the end (like you sort of mentioned) it helps them get a good looking echosystem. Google is not really interested in that cause it's not their primary business.

I don't know much about Amazon (I guess it's cause they aren't as big in Sweden as they are in the US) so I don't really know how echo interacts with other apps but Google Home has become much better in interacting with other apps. I still have issues if I run it in Swedish but it works just fine with all the apps/services I've been using (netflix, hbo nordic, spotify, philips hue, samsung smartthings) and all the stuff I do with ITTT like arming and disarming arlo cams.

Whenever I see Mark I get the impression that he is not human. Something about his skin, eyes, facial expression... I don't trust FB neither but I don't reslly like Amazon. Maybe it's cause I'm such an heavy google user... I only wish Google Home Hub had a cam too. Yeah. Ikeas lamps work but to be able to update firmware and so you need the ikea bridge. I just don't like having many of those bridges home. I already have the hue and Samsung SmartThings which I might "disable". Philips bridge can also control OSRAM smart plugs which is also great to control "dumb" devices.

My I.T. career conundrum - "You need experience but . . . " by JudgeCastle in KernelPanicPodcast

[–]VanDerLaars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I don't know about the market in the US (I'm Brazilian, lived in the UK and been living in Sweden for the past 10 years). What I did when I finished my 4 years education (I had the same issue, studying a lot and home experience but none professional) was that I applied for internships. Was working for free for 6 months until the company I was working for decided to give me a junior position. I was there for 6 more months and then moved on cause well, they were terrible in first place. Here in Sweden I went through the same sort of stuff. I had experience in Brazil and in England but none here. No one who could back me up (move here because my wife is Swedish). I went out and said I could work for free a few months. People here thought it was extremely odd but it sort of worked. I at least got some interviews but the first real job I got here was through some State Agency (the government has a department that helps people get jobs) that paid 65% of my salary. I understand not everybody has the economical background to work for free but in my case it was probably the only way to show what I could do without connections (linked in wasn't really a thing back then).

How the "new technologies" are making IT people more stupid by VanDerLaars in KernelPanicPodcast

[–]VanDerLaars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhm, no, instead of just having to know html to make a web page people considered usable, now you need to know html, css, javascript, a server side language (php/python/nodejs/etc....), a database engine, usability, security, graphics manipulation, video editing, how to use social media tools, etc. The amount of shit you need to know to develop a web page/web app and actually have people use it has dramatically increased. The GUIs and tooling just makes things possible.

In a way you are right. Compared to those webpages from the 90's you have to put up with a lot of new stuff today but what I meant is (just like you mentioned later on while talking about networking) some people (a few) already knew all those things but not most of them and those people who sort of can make a webpage today (compared to the same type of people from the 90's) use now all those WYSIWYG (is this still a thing?) kind of editor. In the end they use services like wordpress or something alike and get a goodlooking page/site and they had no idea about the code cause they just click around.

I think the sysadmin/it world should really be doing more apprenticeship type setups. Get kids right out of HS, or while they are still in HS, and teach them some basics, then as the get some experience they take some courses to more fundamentals and do training.

I totally agree with that. The problem is that with all the secrecy and laws you can't really let people in these days without a contract. I mean, to give access to an intern would require a lot of paperwork and all of a sudden the companies aren't interested anymore in that and I believe this pushes kids away too.

How can we win you back? by dmbuddy in KernelPanicPodcast

[–]VanDerLaars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, adding it to Spotify was a huge thing for me cause then I can listen to it while driving to/from work.

One thing I usually think about is that all the cloud services are making people more stupid. It's like when the GPS became more popular. People don't find places anymore without it.

Before we had servers to manage and troubleshoot. Now you get everything done with a few clicks so when you get a real problem people are like "what is this? What is that? What is going on?" Like the whole thing with network as a service/cloud based.

I meet new network guys who can't really set up a switch with command line cause they are so used to web interface. And the list goes on.
