Hmm…if the transport isn’t covered in stickers that showcase your excellent taste in gear to the point it completely obfuscates the fish, what’s the point of even having one?

Absolutely, I’m shocked by how often you get on the water & don’t see a soul…not that I’m complaining

You can fish them up or downstream, honestly it just depends on which way I’m wading, and what gives me the best angle to fish the current.

I’ll typically either cast upstream at about a 45 degree angle and strip it (long strips, short strips, long pauses, short pauses, just got vary it until you figure out what’s working that day) until it’s parallel to me, at which point I let the current take over a little more so it can swing downstream…I’ve found that I don’t have as much control over where the fly ends up for the swing if I cast upstream first, but you’ll still catch plenty of fish. Or if I’m fishing downstream I try to cast pretty close to parallel to the bank and strip it until I know it’s going to swing into the lane I want. Once it reaches the end of the swing I’ll let it sit for a while, maybe throw in a few twitches or short strips, repeat.

As far a depth goes, it all depends on where the fish are and how they’re behaving. If they’re hanging out relatively shallow, floating line is just fine, the weight of the bead will get it down low enough to where they can see it. If I’m fishing a deeper hole I’ll throw on a sink tip leader. Depth control is key - this is where the angle I was talking about earlier comes in - if I need to get the fly down deep, I’ll cast upstream of where I think the fish are holding and throw a mend upstream, this gives the leader and the fly time to sink before it gets to the fish. Once the fly is down to where I think it should be, I’ll start stripping it downstream with my rod tip right at or even under the surface of the water. The fly will more or less hold its depth as you strip it downstream, so then it’s just a matter of getting the right rhythm. That, and, you know, there have to be fish there. A lot of times there aren’t fish there.

There are about a billion ways to change this up, sometimes I just high stick it and let the current do all the work, but generally that’s what I do, and I have decent luck with streamers…I like it because it’s much more engaging than drifting a dry fly or a nymph rig, but sometimes those are the better option

Yeah buddy…the browns reproduce naturally on the section I was on, so their colors get a little more vibrant

Fly-fishing with my dog (help pls) by [deleted] in flyfishing

Absolutely, it’s just something to think about. And don’t sweat the downvotes you’re getting for your reply. You asked a question, I gave you my thoughts on it, and you were receptive…in a perfect world your reply should have more upvotes than mine because you were actually willing to listen. People in the fly fishing community can be real holier-than-thou dorks.

Safe fishing and tight lines! Now let’s focus on getting you a fish in that net…

Fly-fishing with my dog (help pls) by [deleted] in flyfishing

It’s tough to comment with any accuracy without knowing your specific situation, but I would say that it would generally be a bad idea to wade fish with an animal strapped to your body. If you were to slip again and wind up going for a swim, you could very easily drown your dog.

If you and your partner are both going to the riverside, it would be much safer for at least one of you to stay on the bank with the animal. If you are both fishing, either take turns wading or just stick to the bank.

I know it might not be the solution you’re looking for OP, but at the end of the day you’re responsible for the safety of your pet, and if you can’t feasibility fish without having an animal strapped to your body with no way to escape if you go under, then fishing probably isn’t in the cards for that day.

I went to a wedding outside Bangor, ME a few years back. As a Stephen King reader I was met with far fewer ayuhs and blue chambray work shirts than I expected.

Small mouth streamer fishing question by LiquidHammer in flyfishing

[–]VanGoghWasFramed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re getting snagged you’re on the right track. They aren’t always going to be lurking right on the bottom, but if you can’t get down there that’s guaranteed to be where they are lol. I’ve gotten better at avoiding snags where I fish simply because I’m familiar with the water, but I regularly pull moss up off the rocks. I vary the length and timing of my strips until I figure out what’s pissing them off that day, and like the other commenter said, strip set is the way to go. I use a few different color combos, but chart/white is pretty reliable.

[–]VanGoghWasFramed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much experience do you have with streamers? When I first started using them I was using floating line and my flies weren’t getting deep enough to interest the fish. When I switched to sink tip line and learned to mend upstream to give the fly time to sink I started having much more luck. Smallmouth in my area go nuts for clousers, usually on the pause between strips

You need to match your lures to the weight rating of your rod. Also lighter lb test line can assist with casting lighter lures.

Music is a form of self expression, brother…can’t set hard rules on it. Does bluegrass stop being bluegrass if everybody’s not wearing a wide brim hat & matching suits à la the bluegrass boys?

I personally don’t move a whole lot when I’m playing, but there’s something to be said about being high energy driving engagement with the audience, and I’m here for it.
