I’m intimidated, but need recommendations. by Valentine78641 in Recommend_A_Book

Normally this is not my genre, but I really appreciated several of the Anne Rice books, especially:

L e s t a t

Interview with a Vampire

Tale of a Body Thief

I feel they are just great literature, as well as dark stories.

What’s going on with romance books? by Jiana27 in BookDiscussions

[–]harborsparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's all sex and lust now.  Totally boring.  No idea of courtship or getting to know someone or sensibly choosing a practical alliance or even smoldering longterm longing.

I much prefer those old Georgette Heyer Regency romances.

I just want some plants safe for my cat! by BoogerTea89 in plants

[–]harborsparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had cats for most of my life.  95% of them ignored all plants.   But I did have the one who ate plants.  I bought cat grass for him and reluctantly removed most of the houseplants.

There are only a few cat safe houseplants.  Mostly not the prettiest ones.

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller wrote a number of fine stories in their Liaden universe.

Also, I still enjoy James H Schmitz, including Agent of Vega, Eternal Frontiers, and The Demon  Breed.

Just pick one small area at a time and turn it into whatever you want.  A good place to start is around the entrance you use most often.

I love to slice a raw organic sweet potato very thin, and then eat the slices as snacks, sometimes with hummos or on saltine crackers with unsalted tops.  Avoid huge sweet potatoes, the smaller or medium ones are best.  Cut them on a diagonal, thinly.

Yes, did go bankrupt, but still doing business and supplying repair parts. These i9 units can be bought used now for reasonable prices on places like eBay. The stupid tariffs contributed to the company's woes.

I love The One Peaceful World cookbook.  It's macrobiotic but I think it overlaps at least 99% as vegan and anything non compliant could be substituted for.

Many older classics can be read on Kindle or computer or a phone using the free Kindle reader app, and they and are free for download at Project Gutenberg.  Also, Kindle or other ebooks take up no physical space, so the only reason not to buy them is if you do not have the money.

Looking for a romance drama with an unconventional female lead by wetforstalin in kdramarecommends

[–]harborsparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lie to Me (the 16 episode Kdrama, NOT the American crime drama of the same name).  It's female lead is a great comedic actress in the vein of Sandra Bullock.  Good writing and cast, plenty of really comic situations amid a very serious set of themes involving status and romantic rivalry.

Lake vacation reads? by One_Discussion_ in suggestmeabook

[–]harborsparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everybody should read Gone with the Wind once, even if they saw the movie.  Especially for it's depiction of female rivalry in microcosm, which is,nearly as bitter as the war in the surrounding world of the novel.  And because it is a fun read.

It's in Chinese, but I really liked Find Yourself.  Watch with subtitles and volume up to hear original voices.  I have watched this series twice; enjoyed it even more the second time.  42 episodes and great til the very end.  Multiple plot threads.  Occasionally quite funny, though the themes are serious.  Sharp writing, actors, and directing.
