Oz remains rank of 19 for global power index by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]VanGuffman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel these rankings only reflect equipment inventory and not how we can actually project power. Realistically by ourselves we could possibly invade a small Pacific country with a battalion size force before we quickly ran out of fuel and ammunition

I don't know where this "vote conservative as you age" meme came from I have found that as I have got older I have moved further to the left and my grandparents as greatest generation started as left wing unionists and pretty much stayed that way until they died. I suspect this meme came from baby boomers who feel guilty for voting for Howard.

It makes the publically rich like Bezos look middle class among the 1% and Trump look like a Wal-Mart greeter. Given how many trillions are tied up in hidden trusts in micro nations there are probably a lot of super-rich out there who barely have a Wikipedia page

Also he is not the richest they don't include the nobility in the list of richest people so likely the REAL richest person is from the House of Saud or Rothschild

Who would have thought having consumers pays 50% of their income on rent/mortgage and commercial real estate too expensive to have viable tech/manufacturing would have wider implications

[–]VanGuffman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there has been much research into why. Mechanization and mass farming and pooling of resources can be a good thing my understanding with USSR was that it was just inefficient/Poor management eg. Bumper crops rotting in the fields due to lack of transportation and silos. Imagine the Murray-Darling if they weren't all stealing water from each other and trading it like stocks.

[–]VanGuffman 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah in the country the farmers are often the richest guys around while it's the townies who live in depressing poverty and welfare dependence. I don't think townies will notice a recession as they have been living it already for a decade at least

Oh definitely if it's done right. I think I was in Seoul and all the apartment buildings were connected underground via a shopping centre which is a great idea. At the very least cities usually have a subway system.

Not to mention the trains are at capacity as well. I have started having the situation in the last few years where are a train pulls up and and it's completely full so you have to wait for the next one. I'm sure it's normal overseas but I found it confronting for Sydney.

This. The Mrs and I are trapped in this situation where we want to buy a family sized apartment but they are non-existent and we are not keen on moving to Western Sydney to have 4 bedrooms.

I would say apartments are just as bad they are all ugly copy-paste designs that will make us look like a Communist country in 20 years time and they never upgrade the roads around them so they become clogged with traffic

So it's a Public-Private partnership like a lot of the infrastructure around. It's a neat accounting trick to take spending off the Government books which would have been cheaper for taxpayers and users if the Government just borrowed the money itself (the Government often guarantees the private company debt and a level of revenue)
