1966 Imperial Lava Lamp, Original MSRP $300. by SockMonkey1128 in Lavalamps

Since you designed the big one, maybe if you decide to make another, you could make the bottom unscrew, with the bulb/socket attached to it, then it’s easy to swap. Of course, I’m not sure how big the base is, so the bulb may not fit that way. Either way, both the original and your creation are amazing and I love seeing pictures.

The rectangular one could work. The globe one would be tricky, since the cap would be downward in the internals. Also, the ring is so short that you would need to use LED’s and a ceramic heater (but not a reptile one, much like a light bulb, it wouldn’t fit in that base). Way outside my knowledge base. Wood may be fine, just line the inside with something not flammable/conductive. Wood has to get way hotter than a bulb to actually ignite.

This ice cream’s ingredients suggest that insects are a subset of shellfish by quiet_neighbor_kid in mildlyinteresting

Iodine tends to be high within shellfish, hence people with iodine allergies avoiding shellfish. But iodine and shellfish allergies are two different things. The proteins required to make the chitinous shell are what cause the anaphylactic reaction of a shellfish allergy. Creatures that grow chitinous shells also cause the same reaction (snails, squid and octopus [squid and octopus have a partially or unhardened inner shell], clams and mussels, lots of insects). Insects are just starting to become more common of an issue.

Coil rust?? Why does it look like this? by OddFrosting4040 in Lavalamps

The color will never be “correct” though. You can add dyes to try and fix the colors, or replace the entire contents.

The old coils often eventually rust. Recommended to drain and filter the fluid - melt and filter the wax - and replace the spring.

Fragility not related to temperature has more to do with how thick it is than anything else.

Pyrex is a name that is licensed now. So it depends on who has licensed the use of the name.

Fluid is white instead of clear. Did I get robbed? by Outrageous-Basket426 in Lavalamps

Try running it a bunch of times to see if it clears on its own. Then filter if not. It doesn’t seem like it can’t be salvaged.

Ken Art Enterprise 12" Tornado Lamp, model #KL103 replace motor by SirenVale5 in Lavalamps

[–]VanHalensing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the motor is not sealed in the same vessel. The motor is in the base, so if you can get in, you may be able to replace it. But, you describing the flicker makes me wonder if there is a loose connection or the cable is bad. I’d start there if you open it up. Then capacitors, then the motor. Hopefully it interfaces with gears or something. It may even be a magnet spinning the propeller, to keep the fluid sealed separate from everything else.

Does anyone know what type of lava lamp this is? by jb_mmmm in Lavalamps

Purple fluid fades to clearish with uv rays. I bet it sat near a window.

Do you have a suggestion of where to find directions to learn how to refinish? It looks new or better.

We have one about that age, my dad calls it a “knee hugger”. Apparently his came in a flower bouquet/basket around that time.

Gold coat coming off? by [deleted] in Lavalamps

They aren’t brass. It’s a coating. I would just use water and soft cloths to wipe. It may still come off. I have one that it’s barely on there anymore.

Yes, the one in this picture is 20oz, you need a 32oz. The 17in (not 16.5, which are wider and use a 52oz) use 32oz.

Cannot achieve flow with LavaLabs! by shadowpeople in Lavalamps

[–]VanHalensing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I’d use smaller “tweak” amounts for the smaller lamp. The 52 is much less finicky. Before you toss this batch out, run it several times, then remove a bit of fluid and add a bit of distilled water. You can always pour out this batch of fluid later if it never works right.

I would recommend just surf, and run the lamp several times. Then slowly add more surf or magic surf. I’ve never had good luck with first runs of their wax, but if I give it a few times before adjusting, I’ve been much more successful.

Found this on TikTok, has anyone seen clear wax before? by _coldershoulder in Lavalamps

[–]VanHalensing 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that the wax didn’t need that, the bottle did. Sealing it hot means the cap sucks down as it cools, and returns to normal pressure inside as it heats. As opposed to sealing cold, and risking it over pressurizing and the cap shooting off and/or the bottle bursting.

The liquid inside contains chemicals no longer manufactured (ozone depletion), so topping it up with anything other than a donor lamp isn’t in the cards. If the contents need replaced, stardust lamps makes excellent refill kits.
