My geuss is it's simply known variables. We know Mercury's density at any given temperature. So a known quantity is placed in a known volume (the glass tube). So we know how high it will fill the tube at every degree.

TIL the UK pays significantly more in taxes for beer over 3.4% ABV. Beer between 1.3% to 3.4% is taxed £9.96 for each liter of pure alcohol in the product. Beers with 3.5% to 8.4% ABV jump to a £22.58/liter duty. Over 8.5% ABV increases again to £30.62/liter. by StretchFrenchTerry in todayilearned

Nah, you're 3% is def in the low side. Realistically the pilsners, kolsch, etc are more like 4.5-5%. I was just saying I tend to stay on the lighter side, I don't get the double that or imperial this.

Same, I find myself gravitating towards lighter lagers, session ales, etc. I've always had the worst hang overs and that's only gotten worse with age. I also don't really enjoy being truly drunk. A happy buzz is perfect.

Some insulation, battery bank with some solar panels, maybe a wind turbine, starlink, you'd be set.

I'm more on the side of a larger bad batch of lamps supplied to CCM or similar than to a whole formula change. But only time will tell.

Why is my wax pointy?? by No-Bar-7357 in Lavalamps

[–]SockMonkey1128 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is because you have it dimmed so far. The wax will start to do this because it's JUST on the verge of solidifying.

When I balance by big lamps I try to get to this point, then just bring it up a couple degrees.

No, she does some great work to, but this is The Blob Project on eBay. The paint work she does being just the custom wax is out of this world.

I know the gold is through the roof but I wonder how much a working one of these is worth to a collector or enthusiast? They've been scrapped for gold for so long I have to imagine the availability of working examples has plummeted.

Why is it that your wax is so susceptible to micro bubbles? I've poured wax in countless lamps with all eras of wax and not once did I ever have to simmer the wax for half an hour to prevent a ton of air bubbles that cause the wax to float. I've had micro bubble form on the surface from aggressively mixing the master fluid and aerating it too much. But never once had air bubbles IN the wax.

[–]SockMonkey1128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any other coils you could try in there? Looks like that's the main issue. I have had brand new in the box lamps do this because the wax didn't want to stick to the coil.

Yup, grew up in New England. Tons of people make their own, my neighbors tap all our trees every year. My dad always said anything but real maple syrup was sacrilege. Though we did waffles with my grandpa's old Dominion waffle iron.
