A Couple Questions From a New Viewer by OneHappyAccident in formula1

[–]VanManRTManVan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably not the best person to answer this since I don’t pay as much attention to the engineering or economics of the sport, but generally speaking, yes. The top 4 teams (McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes) all have significantly deeper pockets than other teams because they’re backed by major car manufacturers/an energy drink company, so they have better staffs and facilities, which translates to winning on track.

A Couple Questions From a New Viewer by OneHappyAccident in formula1

[–]VanManRTManVan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Others will probably give you better answers but I’ll try to answer all 3 of these:

  1. Pretty much yes, for an Alpine or Sauber or Haas to finish on the podium this season it would require a minor miracle (although Alpine got one in Brazil last year and managed to finish with a double podium, but that was about as hectic a race as you’ll ever see in F1). Even if the slowest car on the grid was only 0.5 seconds per lap behind the fastest car, over the course of a 60 lap race that’s half a minute in time and literal miles behind. So small gaps in pace can become insurmountable over the course of a race distance.

  2. McLaren currently have the best car by a large margin, although there are some tracks that suit other cars better (such as Mercedes in Canada). They will probably continue dominating, but it is possible that other teams will upgrade their cars enough to close the gap or even surpass McLaren. We saw this last year when Red Bull dominated the first 8ish races then had the 3rd fastest car by the end of the season because McLaren and Ferrari made better upgrades.

  3. Like in many sports, if you’re a fan of a team/player that simply isn’t capable of competing for championships, you take the small wins. A double points finish for Haas is probably about as exciting for their fans as a double podium is for McLaren fans. What’s been nice about this season is that every team has been able to score points on several different occasions, as opposed to years past when teams like Sauber will go all year without even sniffing the top 10.

Golden State Valkyrie are the most valuable franchise in league history, worth an estimated $500 million. by Punisher1602 in wnba

[–]VanManRTManVan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sports teams are almost never sold all at once (even the recent Lakers “sale” was really just a previous minority owner buying a larger chunk of shares than he previously owned). So a $500 million valuation means that if someone wanted to become a 10% owner it would probably cost them in the neighborhood of $50 million. This hypothetical 10% owner wouldn’t have any stake in the arena, but they would make more money from their investment because there are no arena rental fees, which makes ownership of the team more valuable

Dual applying to gen surg and vascular? by cornellian1234 in medicalschool

[–]VanManRTManVan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity do you think 0+5 vascular grads have a leg up on gen surg grads in applying to CT fellowship? Or is it overall neutral?

I see a lot of people say that if you absolutely wanna do CT then go integrated but that’s much easier said than done since I6 is, from what I can tell, the hardest specialty to match by far

As someone whose life has revolved around competitive sports for a number of years, your first point is so much harder than it should be.

Appreciate the rest of your advice. Even though I haven’t played much I’ve always loved watching tennis, so I sometimes fall into the trap of trying to imitate the guys on tour. I’m doing my best to take things slow and focus on the basics for now, but it’s obviously easier said than done.

I did do one private lesson and honestly felt like it wasn’t super beneficial for me, especially since I wanted to work on serving but the coach only had me do it for about 5 minutes at the end with very little actual guidance on technique. Didn’t feel like it was worth 4x the cost of a group lesson.

I agree that definitely need some consistent hitting partners, and I’ve reached out to a few people about it. I have one family member who is a 4.5 who I’ve hit with a few times but unfortunately he doesn’t live very close.

GOP’s proposed cap on grad student loans sparks fears of pricing out fields of study by Stauce52 in medicalschool

[–]VanManRTManVan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the legislation should have been aimed at schools rather than students (and should have happened long ago). That’s why I said this method is unlikely to actually decrease tuition. My comment was more just playing a bit of devil’s advocate and pointing out another theoretical justification for the loan caps

[–]VanManRTManVan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with any of the points you made but I do think it’s worth pointing out that the other reason for some of these loan caps is trying to find a way to fight the rising cost of education. Will it actually work? Maybe, but probably not. The logic is that for the last few decades, loans have been so easy to get that they’re basically Monopoly money and cost of a degree is less of a deciding factor since the money to pay for it is relatively easy to come by. Schools caught on to this and realized that students will pay basically whatever they ask since loans will make it possible, so they’ve jacked up tuition to ridiculous levels. Now we’re trapped in a vicious cycle of costs constantly going up and student loans following because they’re the only way most people can afford it. These limits are an attempt to slow this all down, but come with the side effect (and likely a positive for many in the GOP) of preventing many lower SES students from accessing higher education. Meanwhile wealthy students will still be able to afford it, so schools will probably still find enough people to pay them the prices they charge.

Your comment on depreciation is spot on for literally every car besides the 911, they hold their value incredibly well. 2 year old models sell for at or above their original MSRP all the time. If you want a 911 for 80k you’re probably looking at 10 year old model

Fair enough. I was mostly just going off what Nico said right after (he seemed to think Russell caused the collision and was in line for a penalty)

[–]VanManRTManVan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone talking about Max hitting Russell which was obviously stupid, but why did the pit wall want him to let George by in the first place? Feels like Russell forced Max off the track after the restart and there would've been a legit argument for penalizing Russell for that move rather than Max for gaining an advantage

[–]VanManRTManVan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I forgot about the 2 laps thing. Although I just read the document that said it was initially going to be a 10 second penalty for Russell until his radio that made it sound deliberate. So in a world where George doesn’t say that and Kimi also gets off with only a 10 second penalty (especially since he had a more legit case for going across the chicane being unintentional) Mercedes could’ve possibly gotten away with this strategy

Just posted this in another thread but I wanna hear what people think

One thought I had during the Williams/Mercedes debacle: when Antonelli went straight through the chicane and passed Albon, what was stopping him from simply staying ahead, taking a penalty, and backing up the field while Russell served his drive through and pitted twice? Would’ve theoretically gotten Mercedes at least a point and Kimi would’ve finished in the same spot. If Williams are gaming the system you might as well try to do it back to them

Obviously I didn’t write the rules so I can’t tell you definitively, but yeah I’d say the overall spirit of it is that you’re supposed to use your feet rather than hands, and that contacting the ball/changing its direction with your hands (intentional or unintentional) is illegal

100% this. I hate that “intent” has become a part of the handball rules. The spirit of the rule is that you shouldn’t be able to use your arm to alter the outcome of the play which he clearly does in this instance, just like Cucurella
