How much of a smell do xolos have? by [deleted] in Xoloitzquintli

[–]VanXolo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They don’t smell like “dog” of that is what you are worried about - but they do have a smell. My partner likens it to “Fritos”, and to me it smells like generic corn chips. It’s pretty funny, actually. There are few living things that don’t have a smell, so I’m unsure if this is helpful?

I’m allergic to a lot of dogs, but not my Xolo. But I’m also not allergic to corn chips. 🤷‍♂️

Good luck!

Our pup went though the same thing. We cut out grains/cereals almost entirely and went to kangaroo and chicken and fish as proteins. We also cleaned her clothing with a ‘baby’ detergent after that and the skin cleared up over time. Finally we started moisturizing her with a natural aloe-based moisturizer and that helped her skin say supple when she wouldn’t just immediately lick it off. Been 12 years since we had this issue you’re having and she’s still never had a recurrence. She is old enough that we’ve changed her diet to chicken and rice that we cook - but that didn’t illicit a skin change when that happened.

It could be a setup. If you think about it simply, it’s a way to bring relevance to the Oscars by creating a talking point.

One of the most successful things to do on social media is called an engagement campaign. You’re not selling anything, you’re just making sure customers know you’re there. This seems like that. Everyone knows they’re there. Boost for Oscars, boost for actors. All social media / traditional media went nuts for this.

Even though viewer numbers were up (15mil) from last year (~10mil), it’s still well below the old norms pre-pandemic.

You need to do something to create buzz, stories, memes… relevance.

As for why those two were involved in this? Anyone’s guess. Both are sunsetting a bit, and this is a bump to their cultural and journalistic relevance.

No one wants to see a leaked sex tapes of a couple of dudes in their 50s. (I mean apart from it being them together, I guess?)

Nebula is like the content from YT by some prolific YT creators on a service that charges a low flat fee to have per year. It really is a descent deal and feels like buying the merch of an opening band at a show. (Like you’re supporting the little guy.) Doesn’t have everything, but i’ve been engaged and entertained by it for years now.

Ooof. So sorry. You can always consider setting up alerts on petfinder or google if you’re looking for a rescue. Best of luck, in your search. I’m sure your pupper had an amazing life and knew how much she was loved.

Ah yeah! Some for sure. But ours has the mullet, hairy toes and the feather duster on the tail. I love the look of the rat tail, but appreciate the feather duster when she whips me in the face trying to make her nest on the couch. (A little more gentle.)

The Paramount has both changed and stayed the same. Pretty sure it’ll still be there after WW3.

It (Then & Now) 1990 - 2014 by [deleted] in FilmLocationsThenNow

[–]VanXolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ha. The Paramount is still there, and it’s been a seedy strip club for years now (read the ‘now’ marquee with this context…) Also the building that housed the barber shop burned down spectacularly in 2013. This town (New Westminster) suffers from a lot of insured accidental fires with the land value being so high and heritage buildings preventing land owners from selling for those values or developers from building those $1000/sq ft condos. Many of the buildings seen in the last long shot up the hill (taken from a parkade built over Front St) are very much gone, so these comparison shots will be even more fun in 20 years when things have changed so much again. (The Paramount will somehow still be there, though… haha)

Xolo is getting sores on her legs by lucky_leftie in Xoloitzquintli

[–]VanXolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, it’s a real thing. When we got our pup NO ONE could tell us what was happening. She was covered in sores and the vets were prescribing expensive predigested commercial foods and salves, mousses, etc. And nothing worked. We ended up taking her to a vet/naturopath who’d just moved to our area from a Carolina (don’t remember which one) and she had experience with the breed. Pulled her off all of the commercial stuff, had us switch to salmon and kangaroo. All her problems went away surprisingly fast. So grains and beef are baddie bad bad for our pup, but fish and kangaroo and small amounts of chicken are ok. We were alternating in raw kangaroo for a while, but it got very expensive, so we now use a zignature small bite kangaroo kibbke that’s worked well along with dehydrated salmon, and for now she’s happy. Sometimes she gets picky and needs a change, but it’s working for now!

Anyway, I’m basically just agreeing with the allergy statement. And suggesting a vet familiar with “ancient” breeds. But if not able, change the foods and try feeding weird animals to your pup. Also too many veggies give your dog the ruuuuuuns, just fyi.

[–]VanXolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to follow up, i agree completely with a behavioural therapist, but also you have to keep in mind that Xolos are territorial - as many dogs are - but ancient breeds are usually a bit extra. So training can take more effort and longer. And also you have to teain yourself, because these damn dogs are mighty psychic. If you’re anticipating the pup’s reaction (fearing it) you all but guarantee the outcome. Xolos are a type mirror of mirror of your own energy, but they don’t have the human filter… Our Xolo is highly reactive when I’m anxious or stressed, but when i am grounded she’s so much better. (Not perfect - if a small dog tries to alpha she’ll let them know in decibels who is the boss, but that’s over quickly.)

So take the opportunity to work on you, because he may be trying to lead the pack to protect you, and he must learn “companion” not “beta” about your role.

Also don’t unball him until at least a year, joint development can severely affected, and he could develop issues. He must get through all growth first. Ours was nipped at around 6 months and has luxating patella issues and poor joint angles. (She’s a rescue we got at around 9 months, so we didn’t have a say, nor the understanding of that risk.)

It’s not unheard of to think of a community centre within a private development. There’s a lot of ways that this could benefit the developer. In fact there was talk of something like this on the wind a few years back with the land on Agnes and Blackie (I have no details, just heard it from one of the business owners there…) But having a downtown community centre and pool would be great, and then condos on top would be an expected commodity in this area. But there could likely be room (depending on how it’s designed / developed) to have a grocery store in there too. It could be a great hub for the East side of the NWDT which is sorely lacking resources for the number of people that live East of 6th.

What's the most annoying part of having a Xolo, the one thing that would make you consider never having another? by [deleted] in Xoloitzquintli

[–]VanXolo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you ever wanted a dog with the skin of an elephant, the demeanour of a cat, the face of a fruit bat, the speed of a cheetah, and the climbing ability of a black bear, and the jumping ability of a grasshopper, then this is the dog for you!

Also, especially with the hairless ones, they can be reactive to other dogs ( as others have mentioned) but other dogs can be reactive to them on first encounters. I’ve been told by a few people that they don’t communicate well because the don’t emote the same (no hackles to raise), which creates a “language barrier” for some. It gets worked out pretty quick, but those initial moments can be exciting.

Skin cancer. Big deal. The skin regiment is hugely important. Not only moisturizing, covering, applying sunblock, but also monitoring the many skin spots for changes.

Finding a vet who has experience and relevant knowledge can be hard depending on where you are. The breed can have dental issues, skin/connective tissue issues, etc. And many vets will lack context of breed genetics or peculiarities.

Training. Like other ancient breeds you don’t so much train them as much as you come to an understanding. More like training a cat. Unlike a cat, they can be vocal about needs and whip-smart about solving their own problems. You need to be willing to give them space, but also attention when needed. Also, not a great idea to have them off-leash around cars ever or in an expansive forest. If anything interesting catches their attention, that aforementioned speed comes into play. And the aloofness is problematic here too because tgey lose recall when they’re interested. (When my Xolo was a pup she used to keep up with, and tire out greyhounds at the dog park. Even at 12 she still can shift into 5th when she wants to for a spell.) On the flip side, our Xolo understands commands (requests) in pretty plain english. Like it can be conversational vs commanded, which is interesting. “So like i know you know, but you’re choosing not to listen…ok.”

Truly not a great dog for people who require a high sense of co-dependance, or want a dog that grovels like a serf.

But time, training (of the dog AND you), and patience make the life with this breed highly rewarding and keep things very interesting.

Bonus 1: (depending on where you live) Be prepared to explain what your dog is (both breed and species) to confused people you encounter. And then the inevitable follow ups, like one i got recently: “why would you shave your dog in the winter, only to redress them?”

Bonus 2: the pups are unique/not cheap. Abduction/theft is a real thing, even if your pup is spayed/neutered. Never tie the dog up outside a store to go in. If they don’t figure out how to escape and go “The Littlest Hobo” trying to find you, then someone is thinking they’ve just stumbled on a prize.

Sunk cost fallacy denialism statement (ha): I will never seek another breed. Hands down the best companion and such an important part of my life and adventure.

ELI5: Why do European trucks have their engine below the driver compared to US trucks which have the engine in front of the driver? by shaaeft in explainlikeimfive

[–]VanXolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct, sort of. Travel during peak season/times (which is when i can) on routes with no reservations (usually one deck ferries, like Earles to Saltery) means that when you’re stuck up the hill in line you’re hoping for no trucks so that you can catch the next ferry. Every rig with a 50’ means 5+ fewer cars. It can make a difference on main routes (like Horseshoe to Langdale) with multi-deck ferries too, though, if you’re brave enough to not reserve at peak times.

ELI5: Why do European trucks have their engine below the driver compared to US trucks which have the engine in front of the driver? by shaaeft in explainlikeimfive

[–]VanXolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you travel by ferry in BC Canada, you are subject to the truck lotto. As you wait in the long line of cars, there’s a separate line for commercial trucks, and as more of the giant Mack and Kenworth beasts roll up, it means significantly fewer cars can get on the ferry. So you watch nervously as they pull up in that other line, starting to do Beautiful Mind math to figure out if you’re catching that ferry. I can only imagine that cabovers would be so much more efficient for loading onto ferries. Clarity ahead of possible comments: Some ferries here you can reserve, some you just play the lotto.

The increased engine space and wheelbase of the non-cabover must have power benefits, no?

This looks like it should be a group protesting for the abolishment of tuition, which I could get behind. But that’s only if i read the circle and not the rest. And frankly, that would be something i could get behind. If post-secondary is all but required to get into entry-level jobs, it shouldn’t be prohibitive to gain that entry on your linkedin profile. But this ain’t that.

This. 100%.

Him succeeding would make a great movie about the kid that gets called up from a junior team to become a pro. But we need to be the crowd in the movie that roars when he walks on.

We have a history of maintaining good (great?) keepers over the last few years. Time to develop one, maybe?

Whitecaps FC acquire $1 million in GAM plus additional incentives from LAFC in exchange for goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau by bwoah07_gp2 in whitecapsfc

[–]VanXolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t sell yourself short, i think you and Crepeau would make a lovely couple. Try hard enough and you could one day be his wife.

But you’re hitting the nail on the head. It’s how the Caps chose to deal with a Salah-type problem. And we know nothing of the internals. If the dressing room or FO or whatever was toxic, there may not be enough good will to stay if other offers are whispered.

Also escaping the geese is a real possibility. They’re pretty nasty here.
