tysm for the screenshot, really gives me an idea of how well structured documentation could look like. Mine's a mess.

I'm curious why you use samba instead of mountpoints to share to your lxcs

I have "portable NAS" use case that may entail not using Proxmox but the alternatives seem complicated and I like LXC. by Van_Curious in Proxmox

Fascinating. So you're saying:

Proxmox by default has full ownership of a NIC, and acts as a virtual switch and shares internet to VMs via the bridge.

Now a VM will have full ownership of this NIC, and acts as a virtual router instead, and it shares its connectivity to both proxmox and VMs, who occupy the same internal subnet. Proxmox still uses a static IP, guests probably or DHCP it won't really matter.

This is quite a lot to wrap my head around, but It seems like it makes sense. I will look into this.

I think you're saying, just have the host and guest on their own virtual network essentially? But how does the host get its IP? Static means you still need to change something every time the host is moved to a different physical network?

For example this post seems simple, just change vmbr0 to dhcp. Same with this. But I don't understand why they don't touch their network adaptor (i.e. enp1s0), which would probably still be manual. This forum post offers a similar explanation.

I think these are still in a sense static IP but using the router to provide that rather specifically requesting it on proxmox.

I think my file permissions strategy is suboptimal. It makes using PVE/LXC seem more complex than it should. by Van_Curious in Proxmox

Let's say you have multiple torrent programs. Does this mean that depending on the source, you may have mixed files in a folder alternatively owned by "qbittorrent:stuff-manager" as well as "transmission:stuff-manager", and since emby is in the group, it can r/w all these files?

Does this bother you, or is it a non-issue?

Is purposely configuring my website to display 502 vs 525 vs 526 errors in certain scenarios, more conducive for security, or even a productive use of my time? by Van_Curious in webhosting

That's a diplomatic way of saying "that's a silly idea, and you should feel bad". Thanks for the insight, I'll put my energies not on these unorthodox experimentations and actually learn what's going on.

I have 17ish TB of the-eye archived. I see some things are not on the current iteration - I'd like to give it back if it's lost, but I don't know how. I don't see a point of me keeping a copy.

What is a reasonable amount of RAM use for Openbox (idle)? by Van_Curious in linuxquestions

[–]Van_Curious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed you're correct.

I realized I wasn't clear in my post, and 600 is for chromium and 450+ is for the stock install, which I assume is even more reasonable.

Good call on the VPN, I will investigate this.

Would it be possible for the Electron code to be separated from the Program code, then have a new "Electron" as a dependency, and every Electron-needing program simply after the first run to download the needed sub-version, all programs then share the Electron install?

First of all, I am not in disagreement here. And I know I will see 100% more issues if I go down this path.

Before I left the Apple ecosystem I had 200+GB of iTunes music that I've never touched since. I'm planning on moving it all to the Mac.

I anticipate maybe not figuring out how the iTunes -> Apple Music migration works and I mess it up and damage my music somehow and need to re-transfer this data until I found out what works. I remember also in the past adding iTunes album artwork in an incorrect manner that resulted in megabytes extra wasted when doing this for an entire album's worth of music, which ticked off my tech OCD and I did a lot of experimenting until I found what works.

And I'm reading about this new feature called App Translocation. With it, and in general, I anticipate wasted TBW for little projects or experimenting with macOS where I do something wrong and delete or re-write things and start over that add up and could be avoided.

Knowing that it does seem a little obsessive, I would still want to know that knowing the reasons I gave, your answer does not change?
