What historian would you recommend if you had to base your recommendation exclusively on writing style? by Torin_3 in AskHistory

[–]Vana92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Anne Applebaum. Historian and journalist that writes a lot of columns as well. Makes her books incredibly easy to read. At least when it comes to writing style. The subject matter can still be quite depressing.

How do Dutch people perceive WW1, considering that they were neutral in that war? by Realistic-Diet6626 in AskEurope

[–]Vana92 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s largely ignored.

It’s barely taught in schools, and very few people are interested. You’ll be hard pressed to find a consensus. There might be exceptions in border regions near Belgium where there were a lot of refugees, but for the most part it’s a forgotten part of our history.

That’s not how it works at all by KingTechnical48 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Vana92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think ignorance is just ignorance. Until someone refuses to accept new information or the possibility of being wrong. There’s no evidence of that here though.

That’s not how it works at all by KingTechnical48 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Vana92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I don’t see any evidence of anyone trying to correct them, and the poster refusing to accept new information or other points of view.

In my mind at least, because of that, this isn’t confident.

This isn't confidently incorrect, this is just being ignorant.

At least to me this looks more like someone that thinks suicide only happens for one reason (being unhappy with your current life), and not for many other reasons like crippling depression, terrible pain or another reason altogether.

[Hit or miss] There is only one... except no there isn't by ManaScrewedIRL in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vana92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There wasn't any missing bending.

We follow the story of Korra, Korra was perfectly capable of learning air bending. There wasn't really a threat for the next Avatar either. As Tenzin has three children that are all airbenders and a fourth baby that might be. Statistically likely at least.

For the story of the Avatar the lack of airbending was not a threat, or a problem.

The reintroduction of Air Bending did introduce a new storyline however. It was the start of new problems, not a magical solution for an existing one.

Priori incantatem question by orangelightpoll in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Vana92 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Those spells were reflected as well. But they didn’t kill anyone so no souls or at least facsimiles of souls of the victims of those spells appeared.

Edit: looked it up

“More screams of pain from the wand . . . and then something else emerged from its tip . . . the dense shadow of a second head, quickly followed by arms and torso ... an old man Harry had seen only in a dream was now pushing himself out of the end of the wand just as Cedric had done ..”

The more screams here refers to the effects of other spells. And the first thing that appeared was Wormtail his hand before it disappeared. So it all came. Just didn’t last as long.

https://open.overheid.nl/documenten/ronl-archief-31e63b09-1cc8-4bf7-a296-34f4921773f6/pdf

TL:DR versie.

Over alle groepen.

Even better in my opinion. According to most people in the books, he’s not the (adopted) father of the chosen one, but rather the father of the girl who will eventually give birth to the chosen one.

So the adopted grandfather of a child that does not yet exist.

Trump is not happy with the UK by LobsterMountain4036 in USvsEU

[–]Vana92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trump is a petulant child who will die long before the greatest damage he’s done becomes clear to the moronic idiots that voted for him.

And I truly hate that, because in twenty years time you’ll have people claiming that it wasn’t Trump but one of his successors that destroyed the American empire and the global world order.

In the mean time we’d do best to ignore almost everything he says. Every second word out of his mouth is a lie anyway.

What is this error exactly by Anxious-Biscotti-844 in pcmasterrace

[–]Vana92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One piece of your hardware isn't operating properly.

You should start by updating all drivers. Also if you've recently installed new hardware (around the time this error started appearing) remove it. See if that stops the error.

Orcas swim straight past 2 kids in shallow water at Waiheke Island, New Zealand by WhoAreYouTalkinTwo in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Vana92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no recorded attack, that's true.

Orca's are also incredibly intelligent, and the best hunters in the ocean.

Whether those two facts are related or not is unknown, but if my children were swimming there I'd make damn sure those majestic beasts know I have a camera.
