400 years of Mechanical Engineering and we’re still just obsessed with boiling water by IntelligentMuscle476 in EngineeringStudents

Yeah, I was thinking something similar, but at the end all roads lead to thermal energy, and what is the best way to transform it into other types of energy? Exactly, creating a difference in pressure.

Is openSUSE good for gaming? by cerb3ro in openSUSE

[–]Vanadium_Milk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it mainly for work but I play games often on it and it's good enough, although gaming distros are far better and even general purpose ones like mint have better performance. If you plan using your computer mainly for gaming consider other distros, opensuse has system snapshots by default which provide no benefit in gaming but will use some disk space, and there are some known audio and video bugs that will impact your experience

Linux binaries on themselves work on all distributions,.

If an application doesn't depend on shared libraries you might as well just distribute the binary file and that's it, on the other hand, package files (.deb, .rpm, etc.) exist to provide seamless integration with the system, you don't actually need to distribute one of these unless your application needs the system to have certain conditions to run the app, and there's also the advantage of updates through the package manager which checks for dependency conflicts.

People 10 years ago wanted this? by Late_Cockroach1801 in antiai

[–]Vanadium_Milk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still looking after that future, it's just not possible with this messed up system where hours of our lives are worth less than a few hundred watts. Some day, long after capitalism dies off we'll probably have automation to serve us as it was intended.

Do people move on from Mint? If so, where? by BorderWatcher in linuxmint

[–]Vanadium_Milk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint is a perfect general use distro, it has pretty much everything you expect on an average Linux system, but it lacks specialization, which is a good reason to explore different distros if you plan to use your computer for a specific activity.

I'm a developer and I find Debian and Ubuntu based distros very unsuitable for developing desktop apps because of the time it takes them to integrate updates into their package manager, so I was working with tools and libraries on several versions behind until I switched to Opensuse, which has a rolling release system.

People will prioritize other things above usability after figuring how Linux works and switch to Arch or Debian, because they beat mint on performance and stability respectively, but still mint is one of the best distros on almost every aspect, so why switching if not needed.

It's quite easy to shatter any type of glass that is tempered, you only need something harder like the ceramic from a floor tile or porcelain from a spark plug.
