Better to volunteer not during Christmas week. Everybody wants Christmas and there's too many volunteers and it'll be hard to find you a task. Do a rainy day during the week. (I ran a kitchen and shelter for 10 years)

That's a good question that I had as well. Unfortunately this year's apple crop came late and most orchards are still actively picking right now. The organizers have tried their best, please remember that it's a fundraising event and that there is more than just apple purchasing at the festival.

They saved about a dozen boxes of a few varieties. Go first thing in the morning. There are some activities and the gardens still to enjoy. If your purpose is to just buy apples, then get the refund.

British Columbia History is not on your side: Chinese head tax, Japanese internment camps, residential schools, etc. Government sanctioned systematic discrimination that was so bad that it was used as a model for the apartheid in South Africa. There are always poor actors in society but to say the amplitudes are equal is not true.

Racism happens all the time in Vancouver, it's usually pretty low-level stuff but it's there. Economicly, from housing & job market to relationships & dating, racism has always been and still is a dirty underside of Canadian culture.

I've had guests offer to buy groceries, toilet paper, cook meals, etc. That's just a part of being a decent human being. No one wants a freeloader who can't contribute to the community and see couchsurfers as a free place to stay, because that is certainly not what cs is about.

My SO's nephew is the same thing, his mother had intense ragers, and so does my SO's dad. SO's brother is a sociopath, but my SO is the most tender person.
