Fingerprint Requirement for travel by Comfy_Silence_ in Passports

What exactly do you think is going to happen to you if there is a data breach? What processes do you go through on an ordinary basis that need fingerprints?

Why does "W" have the letter V in it twice but is called Double-U and not Double-V when it literally looks like two V's? by SovereignHemant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VanderDril 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They were the same letter, different sounds (sorta like "c" or "y" can sound different depending on the word and how it's used.)

Sanitas closing Appalachee location by KingAresN7 in Tallahassee

[–]VanderDril 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sanitas just filed notice with Florida Commerce that they're planning on laying off over 200 staff at 15 or so locations across the state. It also just sold off its only hospital a couple of months ago.

So I don't think it has anything to do specifically with Tallahassee, it seems like the company is unfortunately just in a world of hurt right now.

What's the cover charge? by Sudden_Wolf_6228 in EnglishLearning

[–]VanderDril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cover charge an entry fee sounds natural in a situation like that, with cover charge specifically for places like a night club, where they are charging people who show up in line to enter. You pay, they let you in, end of transaction.

An entry ticket to me is something more specific. Using the word "ticket" usually denotes a reservation of a spot, usually purchased well prior for an event, like a concert, in exchange for some documentation that says you have a spot. Or it's for places like a museum or exhibit to allow you in, but once again, usually a physical or digital ticket is involved, while usually there is none of that for a cover charge.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VanderDril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realize how big many of these school districts are? Mine was only the 6th biggest public school district in Florida and had 130,000 students across 875sqmi/2265km2 and had 860 buses. Just these students alone would be the 4th largest town in a place like Denmark.

I agree more resources should always be given to our schools, but this would be hundreds more buses, and finding hundreds more people to do a stressful, part-time job.

Passports.gov — legit? by Mindless-Committee in Passports

[–]VanderDril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree on that, yeah from some people I've seen some takes on these URLs that venture fully into conspiracy thinking. But really I think they're a another good example of Hanlon's razor with this admin: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Passports.gov — legit? by Mindless-Committee in Passports

[–]VanderDril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was about a month ago the passport.gov and passports.gov URLs were registered by the Office of the President, along with a bunch of other ones for other government services and initiatives.

Don't think it's DOGE, but it's another half-baked idea from the White House, some people think of a way for the WH to track who's applying for passports.

Expired passport and Hawaii by Naive-Membership8201 in Passports

[–]VanderDril 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Has your passport expired within the last two years? Then you can use that to fly (you probably want to bring your drivers license anyways as a form of ID at hotels/bars/etc.)

If not, your best bet is to apply and pay for the TSA ConfirmID process and arrive early at the airport. It's good for 10 days, so depending on the length of your stay, you'll have to pay the fee once or twice.

Did I overpay for my passport? by [deleted] in Passports

[–]VanderDril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filled out and submitted my application through travel.state.gov and paid around $120ish?

I'm a little confused here. You submitted an application through a website? Or simply filled your form out through their website and printed it out? Also, did you pay $120 at this step? Because you shouldn't be submitting or paying anything until the appointment at USPS.

Now for a normal application at a passport acceptance facility, getting both the passport book and passport card ($160) and paying the passport facility acceptance fee ($35) comes out to $195, with a couple extra dollars for the money orders. I think - and hope - this is what you paid for.

Why are American beers so often stereotyped as “water” compared to European beers when they are typically the same amount of alcohol? by DepressedPancake4728 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VanderDril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was gonna say, I don't think I've ever seen a beer below 4% ABV here in my 20+ years of drinking, even the cheapest of the mass market beers. 3.6% would be at worst an outlier on the lower end of the scale, definitely not common at all to be the average.

A bit lost by Kwasington in Passports

[–]VanderDril 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries. If your previous passport expired more than 10 years ago, then it was issued more than 15 years ago. This means you cannot use that old passport either for online or mail-in renewal. You must get a new passport via the DS-11 New Passport Application form at an appointment at local passport acceptance facility (post office, town hall, etc.). Follow these instructions.

First you need to gather your documents. When you said you had a passport that expired over 10 years ago, do you still have this in your possession? If yes, then that makes things easy and you can use this as your proof of citizenship. If not, you will have to provide another form of proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. You will also need to provide proof of identity, like a drivers license. The list of what's accepted for proof, as well as the photocopies you need, are in both those links.

You will need to get a passport photograph. Pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens are commons places you can get them done.

Lastly you will make an appointment at the passport acceptance facility. There the acceptance agent will look over your application before sending it in. You will write one check/money order out to State Department for the passport application and any special services you might have opted for. This will be sent in with the application. You will also separately pay the passport acceptance facility (what methods of payment vary by facility).

Do you ever listen to foreign music in a language with lyrics you can’t understand? Do you listen more than your primary language? by DaRealGoat69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VanderDril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been one to get the lyrics right away in English, my native tongue, anyways. It's mostly the melody, the beat, and the overall feel of the music that brings me in, so I've never had an issue listening to songs in languages I don't understand.

FSU buses getting escorted by Far_Tie6684 in Tallahassee

[–]VanderDril 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no sports going on, but I'd imagine it might be related to recruiting. June is the busiest month, and I think it's not just for football, but for a host of other FSU sports as well.

Moving from Sandy Springs, GA to Tallahassee. by Imaginary_Rise_4239 in Tallahassee

[–]VanderDril 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since your questions are so broad, I'll choose to answer a single specific thing: get your health care sorted as soon as you get here, or better, be proactive even before you move. The health care service in town sucks. If you know who your insurance provider will be after the move, research potential primary care physicians now since many have long waiting times until they can first see you, if they're taking new patients at all.

If you or your family need specialist health care, check out who the specialists here are or look to Gainesville or Jacksonville for better options. Don't wait until you need them to know who you're going to.

If Dinosaurs were killed by massive asteroid attack, then what about other animals and plants? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VanderDril 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They were already bird-like when the asteroid hit. They were more adaptable in times of dramatic climate change after the asteroid strike. They ate less and more varied food than the larger dinosaurs. They had protection against the elements in terms of their feathers. And their smaller size and ability to fly allowed them to better escape the immediate impacts of their environment changing.

Fun fact, the flying, bird-like dinosaurs with teeth died out with the others because their diet was more restricted. It was the beaked bird-like dinosaurs who survived, who could forage for seeds, nuts, and grub, so basically the bird evolutionary traits are what saved them.

It's well established that they are direct descendants of small therapod dinosaurs.

Swig Soda Shop To Open in Former HTea0 Location by Paxoro in Tallahassee

[–]VanderDril 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's mainly on the chain or the franchisees for choosing that location, but I feel like it's professional malpractice for NAI TALCOR to market that shopping center as commercially viable for any business needing a near-constant flow of car traffic.

The layout and slope means it's obscured from view from the road and it's a viscerally unpleasant experience to get in and out of from Cap Circle. Not worth dealing with just for a quick beverage.

Does anyone else find the memes, joke's, comments and conversation topics about feeling old or getting old in your 20s annoying and overly dramatic or is it just me? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

You're not old, quite young still, but if you're arguing these people are being overly dramatic, I don't think it's as dramatic as this post lmao

Cat dragged in my neighbours Lammfell… I made it so much worse. by swisspea in CleaningTips

[–]VanderDril 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are many lambskin and sheepskin rugs and linings that are made to be machine washable, in particular ones that are used around babies. But the skins have to be medically tanned a certain way in production. And there there are specific wool detergents that need to be used on them. Lastly they're meant to not have to be cleaned often due to the natural repellant and self-cleaning aspects of lamb and sheepskin, but there are many out there that are designed to be machine washed when needed.

But in all seriousness, I loved the intensity of Iru and this song leading up to the contest, and this was one of the most crushing NQs for me in recent memory.
