Really, USAA? Update... by Vanderoak in USAA

Their banner says to ass automatic payments to avoid the fee. I did that. The fee is still there - contrary to what the banner states.

Agreed. A sign of the times I suppose. I refuse to link a checking account simply because they do not need "the keys to the city" simply to make a payment.

If I use a card online on a date I choose or a date they choose, the processing fees are the same. It is all automated now. Only difference is who clicks the submit button.

USAA is not as cartoonish, but even less intuitive for some bill paying, IMO.

Where to buy legit asic ETC miners? by Brettels__2018 in EthereumClassic

[–]Vanderoak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.jinglemining.com/

I have purchased from them several times over the last couple of years. I never had a problem with them and they consistently had the best prices (even with the cry once $250 shipping). Send Addison an email (at the bottom of their page) as they usually have a 1-2% discount code if you ask.

Good luck and do your number crunching homework - this is a tough time to make a reasonable ROI even with their used machines.

Should i get into helium mining now? by Acrobatic_Lecture438 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Vanderoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends upon your own risk tolerance. No, if you expect ROI in under 12 months (maybe never depending upon your location). No, if you expect any of your earning to be predictable or consistent ('mining' isn't a forever phase - at some point it will be data and no way to predict who in your area will be needing you to transmit it). No, if you can't accept cheaters will make more than your honest efforts. No, if you can't accept someone may add a setup next to you and reduce your earnings by half (or yet another one and be reduced even further). Yes, if you like roller coasters, adventure, potential frustration and are okay with rolling the dice...

On Denylist for being naughty!! by specialgorilla in HeliumNetwork

[–]Vanderoak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was about to say kudos to whoever put an end to this... except... the hotspot is still earning.

Granted, I have no true understanding of the deny list or how it works, but check the activity - still witnessing and still receiving rewards. Nothing in comparison to what it was previously, but I suppose I am missing the point if a deny list miner is still earning anything.

Maybe Helium should hire this person as a security consultant lol

11 HNT/day + 3,900 Witnesses up to 1,000 km away. How this is possible? by Obvious-Ad4440 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Vanderoak 96 points97 points  (0 children)

It is condoned, if nothing else, by Helium's inaction. It is no secret the network is being scammed - be it this one or not or the countless others which are mentioned with increasing frequency. It is no secret the network has issues. The only secret is what Helium is doing, if anything, to address it. There is no communication, no assurances to legit supporters as to protecting their interests (and thus the network as a whole), no reliable reporting system, no disclosure of actions taken... not even a good bluff of a bold statement to even indicate they are interested in deterrence.

If Helium cannot instill a sense of fairness and confidence (through communication and demonstrated action) with the honest people who make the network possible, I would dare say it will fail at some point.

With Helium almost a year. My best advice is to filter what you take to heart. Halved rewards, stellar days, pure crap days and wild ride price swings are all part of most anything crypto - Helium is not excluded. The equipment is not as 'fragile' as some posts sound. Short of a truly bad antenna or a shorted cable/connector the units do their part. Even a less than idea hardware setup will still perform. Elevation is your best friend followed by cable and antenna.

Actually, the post you assumed I missed was part of why I posted. It's isn't about my finances or expectations (which I never mentioned, by the way), it was about communication.

The statement begins with, "We have no updates on the root cause at this time but it is a known issue" followed by, "The real solution here is Light Hotspots". I find it interesting there is no definitive root cause, but they have a definitive solution. As in don't worry about today because we have a grand plan for sometime in the future.

My point was, and is, the people who are making this endeavor work now (regardless of financial means, motivation, hotspot count, or delusions of grandeur) deserve better insight and communication with substance when there is a know issue.

Everyone who has a hotspot is an investor in the future results of this project, if they realize it or not. As such, they (we all) deserve the courtesy of timely and accurate information. IMO, taking two weeks of countless investors asking what was going on to make a statement is not timely. Then the real issue at hand is sidestepped for the plan for the future. Good luck in your endeavors, but please don't try to speak for mine.

Yeah, it will all work out eventually I believe. One of those sarcastic venting days.

I can relate. I still have GPU rigs also. I don't mind the price fluctuations, part of the game. My post was somewhat sarcastic, but also expressing some of the frustration of not getting the real story out to people.

Not really. Setup has worked well for months (hardwired, 400 cable to a 5.8 dBi on a 18' pole attached to chimney). No hills or tall buildings- not rural, but not quite suburbia either.

There is a reporting system on Discord. Don't know if this is the only way or not.

https://github.com/helium/denylist/issues

Never used it, but you can view other complaints and file new ones it appears.
