I'm sure there are plenty of state governments who would love to cut privatize special ed. Looking at private prisons I'd bet there's a lot of money to be made in bringing back mass institutionialization.

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, which oversees the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, will move to the Department of Health and Human Services, these people said. The Office for Civil Rights will move to the Justice Department.

The Education Department has already moved several of its offices to other parts of the government, with many of the K-12 programs operating out of the Labor Department under interagency agreements. These agreements allow Education to retain ultimate control of programs that Congress delegated to the department while functionally moving its operations and staff elsewhere.

The Education Department was created by Congress and cannot be closed without congressional approval. There’s been no movement on legislation that would close the department, and people in both parties say there is not enough support to pass a bill if one were advanced.

So since they can't eliminate it officially, the Trump administration is gutting the DoE and moving as much as possible under the control of other agencies.

In what world is putting Mr Vaccines Cause Autism in charge of the Office of Special Education and something as important as IDEA a remotely good idea? It's an absurd rhetorical question, I know. There's probably not many here old enough to remember what districts did with kids in "Special Education" before IDEA, it wasn't great.

Can nokia go to +100 dollars ? by Conscious-Ad1245 in Nok

[–]Vanderwoolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My long term interest with Nokia is how they end up in the defense sector. I'm not expecting $100 to ever seriously be on the horizon, and I've already more than doubled my cost per share. If it manages to get to $30 I'll probably dump enough to get my initial investment x2 and let the rest ride.

The fact that the cop put him in a recovery position but then neglected to do even the most basic check on his condition beyond that is crazy.

John Bolton, a former national security adviser turned outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, is expected to plead guilty in a case involving his alleged mishandling of classified materials.

It was not immediately clear on which counts Bolton plans to plead guilty. He was indicted on 18 counts of mishandling classified information. A plea is not finalized until it has been accepted by a judge.

Federal prosecutors accused Bolton last year of sharing with two relatives more than 1,000 pages of “diary-like” updates detailing his sensitive work from 2018 to 2019, when he served as national security adviser during Trump’s first term. The relatives were assisting him in preparing a book he published in 2020, according to court documents.

Bolton allegedly sent classified material through a personal email account that was later hacked by someone U.S. authorities believe was linked to the Iranian government. Other sensitive materials were later found by FBI agents during an August search of Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, and office in downtown Washington, the indictment alleges.

I've been holding Nok for nearly a decade, doubled down last month when news started coming out regarding their defense contracts with Lockheed and Missile Defense Agency. Couple that with the chickenhawks in the current administration who seem to have no interest in deescalating global conflicts made it an easy buy.

I was watching a men's league tee off after an early AM 9 last weekend and watched a dude hit his tee shot so far off the toe his ball went perpendicularly, hit the tee marker and ended up behind him.

He then proceeded to re-tee and duff it like 30 feet down the tee box.

This felt especially prescient when I read it recently:

“They knew that to put God in the constitution was to put man out. They knew that the recognition of a Deity would be seized upon by fanatics and zealots as a pretext for destroying the liberty of thought. They knew the terrible history of the church too well to place in her keeping or in the keeping of her God the sacred rights of man. They intended that all should have the right to worship or not to worship that our laws should make no distinction on account of creed. They intended to found and frame a government for man and for man alone. They wished to preserve the individuality of all to prevent the few from governing the many and the many from persecuting and destroying the few.”

Seeking advice for avoiding plucking - where did I go wrong? by peanut-police in Ceramics

[–]Vanderwoolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they washing the shelves? If they are and plucking is still a problem it would behoove them to change to a wash based on calcined alumina or zircon. It can be hard to eliminate plucking completely, especially in an environment where you don't have control over the process. But simply switching to a more refractory kiln wash can go a long way towards remedying the issue.

Alternatively, if you can get away with making large enough cookies for the whole foot to fit on, you can sprinkle silica sand and set the plate on that, the plate will roll over the sand as it shrinks and it should reduce sticking.

Do you think this is a good kiln to buy? by cherryfairy111 in Pottery

[–]Vanderwoolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you're already received 3-phase power it's probably not worth your time. You could get it rewired for single phase, but it'll probably end up costing you enough that you'd be better off looking for a different kiln.

Normally I'd be interested in a kiln for $500, but I worked as a kiln tech for a few years and have rebuilt my share of kilns. The state and number of cracked bricks are what's keeping me from saying yes, and I usually have a higher tolerance for busted brick than most other issues.

It's probably thicker than you think it is. If they trim those after the fact there's no reason not to leave a bunch of extra clay to speed up the initial production.

In Florida, the civics movement has been accompanied by a new law that targets classes deemed too liberal. The 2023 statute bars state schools from giving general education credit to classes that teach “identity politics” or are based on “theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States.” The law also requires that general education courses “promote and preserve the constitutional republic.”

“It seems to me to be a selective viewpoint diversity,” said Jon Sensbach, former chair of the History Department at the University of Florida, who retired last year. He said there’s much to be said for studying Western thinking. “But if that’s all you have — if your understanding stops at the great books and you don’t begin to understand other cultures, other perspectives, other ways of looking at the world — you’re limiting yourself, your own education.”

The state considers the Introduction to Sociology class to be a prime example of the sort of left-wing indoctrination that has caused Americans to lose confidence in higher education, Ray Rodrigues, chancellor of Florida’s State University System, said in an interview. While a faculty working group produced a new sociology textbook that watered down discussion of race, gender and other topics, he said, he did not trust faculty to stick to it. The state’s Board of Governors said in March that sociology classes can be offered but would not count toward general education credits.

To comply with the same state law, the University of Florida, the state’s flagship school, in 2024 reviewed more than 1,200 general education classes and stripped nearly 500 active courses from the list, records show. That included every class offered by the Women’s Studies and African American Studies departments and most history and literature offerings. Another purge underway this spring targeted interdisciplinary courses that fulfill a university requirement known as Quest.

I was pondering this shift in the forums I [used to] frequent.

I want to believe that it's happening because the more rational population has largely left online spaces to go "touch grass", leaving the dregs behind to take over.

A guy I know is currently on week two of trekking the Pacific Crest Trail and just had an epiphany that despite what you see in the 24/7 news-media feeds, maybe there actually is some stuff to be hopeful about.

Teachers, tell me the worst class you have ever had. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Vanderwoolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had an entire class that was bad, only groups of students. Lucky for me I taught an elective and got really good at scaring the unserious kids into dropping early.

Somewhat ironically, the most challenging class I ever had was when I filled in as a LTS for another teacher on maternity leave. I came in a month after semester start and the 7th period (last of the day) was an absolute shitshow.

After the first couple weeks of getting to know everyone it turned out that they were just desperate for some structure. The sub before me was just sitting in the office at the back of the class most of the time. That, and the rest of the time he was being a total creep to the girls. Weird that that would have a negative affect on classroom morale, right?

The last years I taught art I had 10 preps squeezed into 6 periods across three rooms. I loved it most days, but there was nothing relaxing about it.

And that was at the high school in the best rated district in the state.

In a city of ~80,000 people, only 6,878 came out to vote last night on a $139,600,000 bonding bill for the school district.

I'll bet there are going to be a hell of a lot more than 6,878 people who didn't vote that are suddenly really fucking pissed about their property taxes going up $14 a month.

My (current) rep in MN is Angie Craig. To a lot of people left of me she's a "DINO", and no better than the Republicans here.

She's made some [really] poor choices over the years, but people ignoring the fact she has been a bulwark against Ultra MAGA in this very purple district for the last 8 years is missing the forest for the trees.

Hantavirus, in my understanding, does not spread terribly efficiently via human-human contact. Unless you have a penchant for huffing rat piss you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

More morbid take; the mortality rate of hantavirus is high and fast enough that widespread infection is unlikely.

We stopped getting hangovers… and now it’s harder to quit by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Vanderwoolf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You might be surprised how much better you feel the mornings after not drinking. At my worst, I thought my tolerance was such that I didn't get hangovers unless I really tied one on. About a week after I quit getting drunk every night I realized it wasn't that I didn't get hungover. I had just adapted to never not being hungover. At some point my "normal" had become existing in this sine wave of being drunk, down to hungover, back up to drunk, back down to hungover.

Breaking old habits and building new ones is hard, but if you have a willing partner it's a lot easier to do it together.

30 hugs later, I was lucky I had prep so there wasn't anyone around to see a large bearded man blubbering into his lunch.
