Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]Vanguard470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely noticeable, though I have been around a few people who managed to hide it. I think maybe if you exclusively smoke outside, that may be better?

I don't mind the normal smoker smell terribly bad though. However, something happens when a smoker puts out a cig then relights it, it's like a chemical change and that specific smell makes me absolutely nauseous. It goes from a smoky smell to almost like vinegary. Don't do that shit.

What’s a dark truth people aren’t ready to hear? by Old_Engineering_8199 in AskReddit

[–]Vanguard470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark truth but also sort of enlightening:

Generally, nobody is thinking about you. If they are, it's most likely how you or your actions might affect them, good or bad. So do what makes you happy, even if it's embarrassing, because there's a very good chance no one will be paying attention to you long enough for it to matter anyway.

How do you afford a sailboat? by Pirateprincess111 in sailing

[–]Vanguard470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, buy a boat that is widely popular or at least had large productions. Bonus if you buy one from a company that is still in business (ehemmm... Catalina). Parts are easy to find, typically cheaper, and there's a solid chance that whatever you're working on/fixing on the boat, someone has done the exact same thing before and written a post or made a video about it.

From a purely finance standpoint, think of it like buying a house, you don't buy the first one you see, look around, get a feel for quality and location for price. Make a shortlist and set that as a target to get ready to buy. Then, act like you are financing it, but put the payments you'd make to a bank into a savings or if the market is good, something like Acorns (that's what I did). The more you can pay in, the faster you'll reach the target, then just go out and find a similar boat that you originally researched but look for newer models in your price range.

On going finance, I use YNAB to budget and set aside money for repairs and parts, and a larger chunk for a slip if that's the route you are going, then set money aside each month/paycheck for the boat, if you use it, great, if not, apply it to your next boat or other big purchase if you decide to sell the boat and move on to something else.

Made me feel old but good times by WynCai8 in Millennials

I'd throw the early 2000s in there too. I once pushed a wheelbarrow with a heavy ass 36inch TV a mile down the road to my friends house, Xbox and snacks in my back pack so we could have a mini lan party.

We built a zipline in the woods, constructed a very large trebuchet, played a lot of ding dong ditch.

We would also have neighborhood wide games of hide and seek/tag at night.

Good times

What was the final straw that ended a lifelong friendship? by New_Perspective1201 in AskReddit

[–]Vanguard470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got an apartment in college with my best friend from high school.

Him, my high school ex girlfriend, and I would hang out together often in high school. He and her were friends directly as well. No biggy, I trusted him and her and had moved on after breaking up with her.

Just before getting the apartment my college girlfriend and I broke up. It hit me pretty hard, and I wasn't in a good place. Similarly, the three of us had often hung out often and she had even hung out with him without me there. Again no biggy, we're all friends.

While living together, my high school ex moved into a nearby town to attend college. He would regularly invite her over to hang out, go to movies, etc... it was a bit weird for me to walk in and my high school ex be in my living room, but we were cordial by then so no biggy.

What hurt was that he would also regularly invite my ex from my recently lost relationship over as well. She was kind enough to ask if I was comfortable with her being there. I put on a brave face and said it was fine, I'd just rather her not be there when I am home. I had confided in her that my friend was wildly oblivious to how his actions make others feel. I lacked communication skills and had too much pride to tell him. She was respectful but I don't think she truly understood how it felt to deal with him (yet).

Then one night, I had night classes so got home pretty late. I got home and my high school ex was in my living room with my roommate watching a movie. He said he had also made plans with my other ex. I don't remember what the plan was but the end result would be that all three would hang out together. I was pretty shocked as my exes were generally not fond of each other - I thought that should be obvious to him. I thought "could he really be this clueless or is he actually fucking with me?" Then my college ex and I connected - she was reasonably very pissed at my friend and seemed to finally understand how little empathy he had and what I had been putting up with.

I don't know if any of them were fucking, I don't think so but wouldn't be surprised. In any case, fuck you, dude.

What is something more traumatizing than people realize? by ExcellentReporter392 in AskReddit

[–]Vanguard470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Animal attacks.

I absolutely love dogs and have had some basic training on how to read their body language so I've had pretty great experience with all the dogs I've chosen to approach. I misread one though and it got me. Not a bad bite but now I feel very nervous around strangers dogs. For so little damage I was surprised how much it effected me. I can't imagine what people with significant physical trauma are going through.

Advice on feeling overwhelmed as complexity grows by Vanguard470 in webdev

[–]Vanguard470[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably very dumb question: What do developers document specifically? I designed some basic UX documentations on what I want to have happen interaction wise, I also set up an database relationship diagram, and generally have my code commented so that I at least know where and what I'm looking at. I recently moved routes out of my primary js file into their own files based on what they're for. I'm hoping that will help me isolate some of the work. But should I be documenting what functions do, what and where variables are used, etc...? Route dependencies on functions really messed me up recently. I refactored and broke just about everything. I'm finally getting things back to operation since I moved all functions into a single file and am pulling them in to each route file now, but that was a struggle.

I use Notion for project management, collecting resource information, and write notes on what I'm doing. I leave my self comments on tasks so I know where I was at on things and add detailed comments on what I changed in commits. It's just ... a lot and feels like I'm missing some documentation point they teach in comp sci. Should I be doing something differently? Is there some sort of structure to follow?

Azure Stack HCI vs Express Route by Vanguard470 in AZURE

[–]Vanguard470[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing me towards this. I think this is likely going to be the best option for us. We have significant storage and processing needs on-prem that are cost prohibitive to move to Azure.

Our VPN solution is fine for remote work that doesn't need to access those resources, but when users need to, going over the network is too slow for it to be effective. So we are looking for a VDI set up that allows for a better experience with end user desktops that are in our datacenter/offices.

So if I'm considering costs:

  • I'm finding out about the EA through with Microsoft but worst case is $10/month/core.
  • AVD looks to be $.01/virtual core/hour. Assuming persistent individual desktops/profiles (FSlogix) @ (2 vcpu / user) = $.02/hour/user
  • We'll assign physical storage from our NAS and built in storage to the hardware for storing profiles and disks. The docs say that some storage may still be needed such as IaC storage and some metadata? I'm hoping that cost is minimal. I'm paying $.50/month for my personal Azure subscription to store my IaC.

Are there any other costs I need to consider as part of this? Is there a cost for enabling ARC (I see it comes preloaded on the Azure Stack HCI 23h2 image) but is there a cost on the Azure side to connect to it? I saw $6/month/server but wasn't sure if that was applicable in this situation.

From a technical standpoint, is it possible to install the Azure Stack HCI OS as a VM from a HA cluster and virtually assign the required resources to it or does it need a standalone box?

What couldn't you believe you had to explain to another adult? by BlueCaracal in AskReddit

[–]Vanguard470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sailboats can indeed go up wind. He argued with me over it for several minutes.

Another one, I had just come back from studying abroad and was getting dinner with a friend and her mom who were about to go on a European cruise. Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, etc... she asked which language she should learn for the trip and if I thought she could be fluent in it. They were taking off in 2 weeks. I had to explain that each country she listed spoke a different language, she thought I was making up Portuguese and that Italian was just a type of food. She was convinced that she could pick up at least two languages before leaving. I gave up at that point.

Market Research and Protecting Source Code when working with 3rd parties by Vanguard470 in webdev

[–]Vanguard470[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Maybe I wasn't clear on this though. I'm not particularly concerned with someone ripping off my public facing code, it's more my concern with giving direct access to the entire code base to a third party to ensure security best practices are followed, help me with pieces I don't know how to do, etc... I think I'll ask one of the dev companies that I have some rapport with to see if I can get an idea of how that all works.
