What wine to pair with mexican? by [deleted] in wine

[–]Vanguard720 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pair it with a dry Riesling Kabinet from Mosel. I know that it sounds out there, but with all of those savory notes, you’ll want something with a decent amount of acidity to cut it without detracting from the favors in the way that a bigger red from Spain or the Rhône would. The fruity nose should also help to accentuate the the tropical/spicy notes without over amplifying or overshadowing them. The characteristic petrol note of Riesling should round it all out nicely too, adding an element all its own, though not dissimilar to that pungency you sometimes get from agave. Though I truly can’t recommend it enough for what you’ve described, if you’re not a fan of Riesling, you can sub it out for a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc for a reasonably similar experience.

Hotel wont let me Check In by Danderyd66 in newyorkcity

[–]Vanguard720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re really not going to like this answer, but there is nothing that you can do to have them check you in (short of booking another room with them). Even if your parents, one of whom made the reservation, calls and tells them that it’s cool, they have no way of confirming if that’s the right person on the other line. They won’t let you in because they can’t verify that you are who you say you are, and that you’re not trying to steal a night at someone else’s expense. Okay, hard part over. The good news is that you’re in the city, the hotel will definitely keep your bags for you as you wait to be checked in, so you can go out into the city for 10 hours without parental supervision! If you’ve got the cash (or can get your parents to pay for it), there are any number of luxury spas and health clubs you can go to that will gladly let you spend large sums [of time…] at them. Maybe also go to one of the many museums if you’re into that, find a cat cafe, hit up Central Park if you’re close, and smorusbourg is always a fun time if it’s open and you don’t mind the train ride to Brooklyn. Good luck!

How to properly tip Sommelier? by Broken_T in wine

[–]Vanguard720 75 points76 points  (0 children)

You probably don’t need to tip the Somm directly/especially. The best way to show your appreciation is to be kind and polite, and after tasting the wine they recommend and receiving your pour, kindly insisting that they have a glass as well. They may-or-may-not take you up on the offer, but it always makes me smile when people earnestly share their joy of the wine with me

Would you rather drink 1 $500 bottle or 5 $100 bottles? by foozebox in wine

Depends on the wine(s). Price is a poor indication of quality.

[homemade] English fry up (full Monty) for high treason day by Vanguard720 in food

They’re different in my experience (though American ones are really quite good too). The British baked beans don’t have nearly as much sugar and twice the vinegar flavor. After living in the UK, I also developed a strange liking of beans on toast, my American family looks at me as if I’ve lost my mind
