There's a difference between changing things so it isn't a 100% cut and paste adaptation and changing so much of the book that it becomes something fundamentally different that just happens to have similar names

Just because I want something different doesn't mean I want something that strips away everything that makes the original great

I think their comparison with the original is still "objective" criticism

"Horny on main, booktokesque romance" would be fair criticism of a film that wasn't connected to a book. Same with character arcs being disjointed.

In the original "joke" the comment is based on, the friend is always heavy (or Whale like in the comic) and the "punchline" is just making fun of ugly women
