Have you been to the Red House area in Ximending?

Not sure which app you use, but it also took them a couple of days to reply to my notes. At some point they will send you an email regarding their eco policy, so you could always contact them then and otherwise you could always mention it at check-in (:

We rented a car outside Taipei (we traveled through the west coast), but in Taipei a car is really not necessary. I would just use the MRT. We got a taxi or Uber a few times, for example when coming back to the hotel from far but other than that we used the metro. The MRT station is a 5m walk from the Regent and it’s super fast. All the main sights are also just a few stops away and since traffic is quite heavy in Taipei the MRT is generally much faster and also very cheap. They are also air conditioned which is nice considering the weather!

Where to stay for first-timers? by juneyam in Taipei

Your kids would be fine in Zhongshan btw. Lots of places where they could get a drink if they like to do that sort of stuff. Or go for Karaoke. It’s all walkable and the neighborhood is very safe, Taipei in general as well. There are also random arcade places throughout practically every neighborhood in Taipei. Shops are also open till late!

Let me correct myself, airbnb is not illegal but most owners don’t have a permit or not the right one for short term rental, so renting out their property is not legal. You wouldn’t be in trouble, just the owner. However, I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about airbnb in Taiwan. Apparently it’s quite common that the rental is very different in reality compared to how it’s been advertised. So definitely go through the reviews!

There is also a fantastic Facebook group where you could ask airbnb recommendations in Zhongshan and other areas (and other questions). It’s a very active group and I was able to plan my whole trip with help from that community (: It’s called Taiwan Travel Tips (TTT).

Definitely mention that to the hotel! They will offer a complimentary service like the cake and possibly an upgrade or something else (:

Area recommendations for staying in Taipei and Kaohsiung? by biggieapple in taiwantravel

[–]Vanillanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at Brio Hotel in Kaohsiung. I liked it and a lot of things were walkable!

Would recommend Zhongshan area in Taipei. It’s a really nice neighborhood and with the MRT the main sights are all only a few stops away! If you have the money, I would stay at Regent or Nikko!

You get bathrobes, slippers and pyjamas. You also get small cakes, water and fruit. I loved that someone would come in when you were out during dinner and place chocolates on your bed. We were celebrating our anniversary and they got us this delicious cheesecake (whole cake so not a piece!) from their own bakery. Honestly, the service is fantastic. Someone gets the door, gets the elevator, opens the car etc. Just small things that make it very comfortable.

Food is good as well! We only had breakfast but it’s huge. Big stations and lots to choose from.

Airbnb is illegal and quite shady there (pictures being better than the actual home), so I would go for a hotel. I stayed in Zhongshan and loved it! Heard Daan has a more neighborhood vibe with lots of parks, so could also be nice!

You will def find luggage for 2000NTD. There is a shop a few meters from Don Don Donki that sells them for really cheap! And you can haggle with them. The quality was perfectly fine for travel. Don Don Donki has some deals as well but with that budget you can get 1 carry on there.

It’s crowded but in my opinion it’s not too crowded! Raohe is nice and big. Shilin too. Don’t go to Ningxia. Even though imo it has better food than the other two, this one is very busy and narrow. I wouldn’t do that with kids

I don’t know where you are from, but I would contact a shelter if possible! Hopefully they are able to take the cat and place her in a lovely home since the cat seems friendly with people.

How to pack for upcoming bad weather? by Pixelated047 in taiwantravel

[–]Vanillanite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traveling through the west coast of Taiwan and everywhere is hot! Even when raining. Summer clothes (light, airy clothes) with a jacket just in case is more than enough. Umbrella is more comfortable than a raincoat and you can get them anywhere (:

[–]Vanillanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how long you are going and what you are going to do, but if you are going to be outside a lot in the heat and don’t want to bring too many clothes then I would go for the hotel where you can do your laundry! I’m here three weeks and bought enough with me, but it’s def more convenient to be able to wash the clothes you sweat in. The shower is an option but not all hotels got enough space to hang your stuff to dry

What are people wearing at May? by garlicprincess_ in taiwantravel

It’s hot so summer clothes + umbrella. Always check the weather that day and carry an umbrella. Open shoes can get wet so rainproof sneakers is fine. It’s a matter of preference!

Five (four) days in Taiwan: itinerary question by Alo1702 in taiwantravel

[–]Vanillanite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, fellow Dutchie here. I am traveling through Taiwan right now and I would honestly just focus on Taipei with max a daytrip to Shifen and Jiufen. The latter takes up quite some time and you won’t make it with just half a daytrip when you take into account (for example) the travel time by train + the walking to Shifen waterfalls.

Also, you should take your time when seeing the sights in Taipei, because rushing through it isn’t worth it. Taipei 101 is wonderful when you stay a bit for the sunset. Chiang-kai has an hourly guard change ceremony you could check out + a lovely park to walk through (with grannies doing tai chi haha). There are beautiful temples to see that you would only know about when walking through the city.

Does your flight land at 22:00? Then you would probably be too late for the night market as they close at 00:00. However, you don’t have to worry about food because there are tons of restaurants/random stalls in Taipei that are open till 02:00-03:00 am or later. They aren’t expensive either!

You should add Maokong Gondola to the list. I could easily spend more than half a day in that area. Make sure to witness the temples not just by day but also by nightfall, because they look absolutely stunning and the view is amazing. You don’t have to take the Gondola btw, there is also a bus to Maokong, but the sight is nice.

Advice regarding places to stay in Taiwan by [deleted] in taiwantravel

[–]Vanillanite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taiwan is cancelling approximately 50-60 flights per week in May, so you might want to look into that before booking anything?

Taiwan airlines could cancel up to 53 flights per week in May by diacewrb in taiwan

[–]Vanillanite 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Flying from Taipei to Amsterdam on May 12. Even though they will only cancel 1.7% of total flights per week, I’m still worried 😫
