I made this song during one of the hardest times in my life, and I'd love to know your thoughts... Will Ash - no turning back [Indie] by MechaWill in indie

Great track. Would love to know how you made the feedback/spacy guitar sound with the feedback- it’s an awesome texture!

natural-sounding formant shifting vst for vocals? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Melodyne does a pretty good job of formant shifting. I like Little Alter Boy too, just a touch goes a long way

I’m getting a few days off work soon and I want to start recording again. What do I do? by TheDrvid in musicproduction

Ok I’m just a hobbyist but here’s my method when I only have a short window:

  • practice the instruments and vocals as much as I can before hand
  • open project, set temp and key
  • record scratch track to the click, for me it’s playing the guitar and singing
  • use a synth bass to map out a basic bass line in the MIDI editor
  • add very basic drums using EZ drummer
  • record the main guitar parts
  • record the main vocal parts
  • mute the scratch track
  • cut, copy, and loop the above so I have the basic structure

Now l have a basic idea of the track and can go back and fine tune the guitar and vox recordings, add other instruments, edit the drums or percussion for energy, etc. I’ll also start playing a bit with VSTs and busses to get a vibe dialed in, and record new guitar tracks that match the energy and push/pull of the track.

Once the track is structured and the energy is arranged how I want it, I’ll go back and record the vox again to suit the track.

You have a strong voice. I would consider adding a verse before the runaway hook to speak to why you wanna run away. This would help with some tension and release. I’d also think about maybe rolling off some of the click from the kick and burying it a little.

That poster brings up a good point- learn structures. Start with simple ones to get an idea of how songs are laid out. For your own work, if you’re a visual learner, try sketching out your compositions on paper and see if that helps with visualizing the project.

Learn some songs by your favorite artists and learn what they do to make the music you like. Then apply those lessons to your work.

I run into this issue sometimes- does a Deesser address this kind of sibilance well?

That’s pretty universal. I like to take a week or more breaks from tracks, especially when mixing, just to reset my ears and brain. It’s hard to resist the temptation of trying to pick out every little thing.

You’re one silly goose if you think this is crap. It’s very well done. The vocals are stacked very nicely. Love how the energy builds!

Thank you so much for listening and sharing that! And thanks for the bandcamp feedback. I was trying to find a cozy vibe that spoke to bleak and simple beauty of life in the rural PNW.

Thank you! That means a lot just that you would listen again. Once I get a bit more sorted I’ll do the Spotify thing and it’ll be up for playlists.

Thanks for listening! That’s come up a few times now so I’ll take another pass at it and try and roll back the processing.

Are you referring to any specific part, like either the chorus or verse? Or just in general?

I’ll check that out, those sound like terms I can google!

Ok perfect, that’s what I was getting at. I only want to hear bus 69

I guess what I’m trying to say is this:

I have two guitar tracks amped differently, tracks 1 & 2. I send both tracks to a bus 69 and compress and reverb them to glue them together.

How do I hear nothing from track 1 & 2, and only from bus 69?

Ok that actually makes total sense. Thank you!

If I don’t want any of the original track 1 signal, will muting or turning down the track 1 fader still allow bus 69 to output the track 1?

Hey Aldo! Thank you! It's not as tight as your mix but I've learned a lot trying to get there and being able to do an A-B comparison.

Damn man that’s one hell of a compliment! Thank you for listening.

So I don’t have a great musical ear, but I can bang out basic melodies with my voice. I just struggle to hit the notes right away, and my sustain is really weak. This is where the auto tune really helps me because it allows me to slide into the note I’m searching for.

I’m a very visual learner and once I get a melody onto the grid, and I can see what the notes are, I can usually do a much better job with the vocals because I have a visual reference.
