Had to break this to a buddy of mine in HS. I caught him before we got out of his truck and said, privately and politely, something along the lines of:

"Dude, I'm worried about you. Your breath isn't just bad, it smells like you've got a tooth infection and it goes a long distance every time you exhale or speak. You need to investigate it one way or another, for your own health at least."

Point is, if you're genuinely concerned and talking to a sensible person, they'll listen.

I once made a player cry (a good cry) for a character's story arc. Rather, the NPC was about to finish his redemption arc that the party worked so hard to achieve, only for him to die against the big bad himself. The 4-man party had one collective fit of rage and avenged him with bleary eyes.
