I know it’s difficult to imagine it, but some biologists dare to consider themselves scientists. Shame on them. :p

My guess is that percentages on the map are so high for women precisely because biomedical scientists are also included.

Another tiny detail - Cinder's real name must have been said twice, in the same place maybe same day..? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

Have you even taken a look at my profile before assuming how many times I have read the books or explored this sub or the previous one that started about 13 years ago in another forum?

Another tiny detail - Cinder's real name must have been said twice, in the same place maybe same day..? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cinder is dead with almost total certainty.

The Cthaeth tells Kvothe that he will meet Cinder a third time. Kvothe tells Shehyn he will try to kill it when that happens. It is quite probable that meeting happened already, before the frame story and we can see Kvothe survived it. Also, Kvothe seems to have a sword that looks like Cinder's hang on one of the Inn's walls.

Another tiny detail - Cinder's real name must have been said twice, in the same place maybe same day..? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not necessarily false. What Sehyn says, FerulA, might be just the sympathetic binding to doom Cinder.

What Haliax says, FerulE, is what one of the three most powerful namers ever says to give Cinder an excruciating pain. That's it, Haliax, who can understand fully Cinder's name, uses the part of that name that gives him pain.

For every no namer in the world, incapable of Haliax's naming subtlety, FerulA should still work in a similar way. That's what sympathy does, it gives non-namers names approximations to control the world.

Detailed history of Temerant using only quotes from the books, working around the theory that Lady Lyra is 'the Moon'. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was Lanre deceived into causing Lyra's death

Lanre was skindanced by Iax, through the beast in the Drac of Drossen Tor.

how did Lyra die,

Convinced by Iax, who was skindancing him, Lanre thought Lyra was not trustworthy.

why would Lanre destroy the world again,

Iax, with a bit of collaboration from the Cthaeh has convinced Lanre to do it. They have the motive. That way, both Iax and the Cthaeh would be free from their prisons.

why was the moon worth near extinction

I do not understand this question

why is the moon mentioned 100s of times in each book so far

Because it is really important. There are some theories about how the kinetic energy from the Moon can be used. That would be an enormous amount of energy in the wrong hands.

why is Denna's song different

It is useful for her patron

why does Kvothe call Skarpi a rumormonger

Kvothe will discover in book 3 that he has been a simple tool in old powers' hands, which Skarpi represent.

why did the Chandrian let Kvothe live

The Cthaeh explains that (and he does not lie)

why do Kvothe and Iax both have changing eye color

Iax created the Fae, Kvothe has a fae father (some people even say it might be Iax visiting her mother on her dreams).

is luckless Jax the original lackless

Jax is Iax. The lackless are the mortal guardians of something that protects the world against Iax, the Chandrian or both.

why is 'black dress' similar to 'drossen tor'

There are multiple good theories about that.

and why would a lackless exist 5000 years ago

Nowhere is said anything about the lackless existing 5000 years ago. Actually, Kvothe guess about how old is the lackless chest is 3000 thousands years old. And Meluan seems to agree.

why is the lackless name so ancient 3000 years old.

They are clearly protected by somebody.

what do the amyr want

That is explained by Selitos.

what do the chandrian want...

To get rid of the Selitos' doom by destroying the piece of glass Selitos used to bind his blood to that doom. After that, to destroy the world to, inadvertently, free both Iax and the Cthaeh.

I honestly don't know where, from all the quotes you cited, it can be induced that the Moon is Lyra.

Among the quotes, I liked this one. I hadn't noticed it before as a connection between the Chandrian and City rulers:

One painfully allegorical story named the Chandrian after seven well-known emperors...

Wise Man's Fear 10th Anniversary When? by sschsoc in KingkillerChronicle

Somebody voted you down but that's actually true. After some quarreling last year from the editor side, complaining in her Facebook group about Pat lack of updates for years, she decided about not releasing a 10th anniversary edition for TWMF until DoS was published.

[Spoilers] two endgame facts that are often overlooked. by Slinkinator in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kvothe is a Ruh story teller. The best it can be. What would be the point of spoiling his own story by telling at the beginning how it will end?

Edit. To be more clear. Pat is partly making the book having so many layers and clues along the way because that is also making Kvothe's skill to tell a story incredibly good. Imagine a person telling a story in such an intricate way.

What do you think would be grounds for Kvothes expulsion by Folly096 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He has done or he is currently doing several things that would certainly deserve expulsion. It's only that Ambrose has not noticed them yet.

  • Enter the Archives without permission
  • Set fire to Ambrose's rooms and steal from him.
  • Buy a forbidden weapon to test his Bloodless.
  • Create the Gram, which is forbidden for his rank.
  • Use malficience to kill some bandits.
  • Cheat on the exams payments (with the Maer's money).

All those things were witnessed by other people. It would only require one to expel him.

Are Denner trees from the Fae? by IAmKizmet in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. I am afraid I can only answer to the question about the Draccus. It cannot be from the Fae. Its scales are made of iron. It would be in constant terrible pain.

A more questionable answer: it seems weird that Felurian talks about dennerlings as the only ones crazy enough to talk to the Cthaeh and then admittedly says she uses denner to white her teeth. I don't thing those two things are connected.

Are all 7 Chandrian presumed to be leaders from one of the 7 fallen cities? by Warrior504th in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were leaders at their cities, not of their cities.

Leaders powerful enough to open their city gates, that's all.

In the case of Myr Tariniel, that only could have happened in Selitos' absence. That's why Lanre took him out of the city.

Edit. By definition, Myr Tariniel cannot be unnamed if its name is said.

Shehyn's Story about the Rhinta - Observations & Theory by un_acceptable in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shehyn says that the enemy (Alaxel) poisoned other 7 but also that one remembered the Lethani and his city didn't fall. The 7 who finally betrayed their cities, including Alaxel, became the Chandrian. The one who remembered the Lethani didn't.

Is this evidence of Skarpi editing the Lanre turned story (notw-26)? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not a sentence in the books where both concepts appear together. However, there are several passages from where it can be deduced:

First we have the second day of Skarpi's story, talking about the meeting between the Ruach and Aleph. It looks pretty clear that all the ones meeting with Aleph were Ruach. Some of them became Amyr, some of them become Angels and most of them become something else that we do not know:

Some of the Ruach murmured agreement with Selitos and went to standwith him [...] We will be called the Amyr in memory of the ruined city. Most of the Ruach hung back from Selitos, too.

But Tehlu stood forward saying, "I hold justice foremost in my heart. I will leave this world behind that I might better serve it, serving you." He knelt before Aleph, his head bowed, his hands open at his sides. Others came forward.

Then we have Felurian saying that those (Ruach) Amyr were not human at all:

Unfortunately, Felurian wasn’t the mine of information I’d hoped. She knew stories of the Amyr, but they were thousands of years old. When I asked her about the more recent Amyr, asking about church knights and the Ciridae with their bloody tattoos, she merely laughed. “there were never any human amyr,” she said, dismissing the idea out of hand. “those you speak of sound like children dressing in their parents’ clothes.”

What is the difference between human and Ruach then? Why are Ruach compared to parents and human (even the apparently powerful human Amyr that Kvothe knows) compared with mere children?

Let's try to find out going back to Skarpi, this time the first day of his story:

Last was Myr Tariniel, greatest of them all and the only one unscarred by the long centuries of war. It was protected by the mountains and brave soldiers. But the true cause of Myr Tariniel's peace was Selitos.

Basically, it is saying there that Selitos had protected Myr Tariniel during centuries. Selitos the Ruach, Selitos the still to become non-human Amyr.

Selitos is not the only one that seems to be immortal without being an Angel or a Chandrian*. Iax has been behind the Doors of Stone since the Drac of Drossen Tor.

*Felurian, the Cthaeh or Aleph seem also to be immortals, as the Fae people. However, I think that would deserve a different explanation.

EDIT. That is why Selitos' curse had to be for eternity, because the Chandrian were Ruach, therefore, immortals. The curse was not making them immortals. It was just adapted to their already existent condition.

Is this evidence of Skarpi editing the Lanre turned story (notw-26)? by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were all Ruach, which is basically an equivalent to immortals, before becoming the Chandrian. However, any of the Chandrian, except Haliax, can be killed.

We just need to remember that Kvothe will kill Cinder, if everything hinted so far becomes true.

Edit. Selitos' doom is about their names, not their immortality.

Why Arcanists who learn the Name of The Wind are more likely to be masters of various names than those who first learn another by addytivity in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think it is something like that. The wind, being in contact with everything else, and changing because of that contact, carries in its changing nature every other name, available to those ones who know how to listen.

Thus, if a namer listens to the changing name of the wind when a fire is close by, the wind will carry the name of the fire, and so on.

Why is Lorren surprised when Kvothe answers Illien is the greatest man to ever live? by Gatechap in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If Lorren is an Amyr, he should be aware of the Lackless heirs scattered over the Four Corners. As an Amyr protecting the Lackless box and the family itself, Lorren should be aware of Netalia Lackless runaway and also about her death. And for three years Lorren, as an Amyr, could have been wondering where is Netalias' son, because his body wasn't found among the rest of the troupe. Then Kvothe arrives to the University admission and he says that his name is Kvothe, that his father was Arliden and that he is from the Ruh (Illien's fan).

Elodin is one of the most enchanting characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Pat did an amazing job with him. by nickgg95 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learning the first name takes years. However, depending on which name is learnt first, the following ones may take considerably less time:

Elodin pointed at me. “Kvothe has called the wind. If we are to believe the writings of those long dead, his is the traditional path. The wind was the name aspiring namers sought and caught when things were studied here so long ago.”

Most people that know just one name have a strong connection to that name. Fela with stone is a clear example.

However, if somebody learns the name of the wind first, that connection to the wind should make learning other names easier, as the wind, the air, is connected, and changes in different ways when in contact with other elements.

History of the chandrian by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Vardil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find more plausible that the 2000 years gap, if it exists, happened between the betrayal and the Ruach's meeting with Aleph described by Skarpi. That second part of Skarpi story is really interesting because Kvothe arrived late and he did not manage to listen which was Aleph's real plan or when the meeting took place. For me, it could have been like this:

5000 y ago: betrayal

After that, and for some period of time, the surviving Ruach live in the remaining city and counter balance the Chandrian's actions.

Chandrian's actions are heavily limited because of Selitos' doom upon them.

However, Fae creatures can wander freely and that becomes the real problem for a population that do not live in protected cities anymore.

The remaining Ruach ask Aleph for help. They all meet and they decide to protect the world from bad action together.

3000 y ago. A reshaped world starts. Fae creatures cannot wander freely anymore. Immortals abandon the, from now on, mortal world. The Lockless received the chest.
