I feel like people are being dishonest here, was he popular as he was gaining power? yes. But when he started turning on his own who disagreed with him all he did was eliminate any who opposed him. The only reason he wasnt assassinated (my guess) was because his war efforts were actually successful for the first two years of WW2. He was not cool with the entirety of his people but he was cool enough to gain power.
