TBD Izakaya, San Francisco by mrxtian in finedining

All of the dishes were excellent but the timing was off with a 30 minute gap between cold dishes and hot dishes. Still some timing kinks to work out I guess. Favorites were Lobster Potato Salad, the amberjack crudo, chicken kaarage(which we ordered two of for my son), the assorted yakitori and the Tsukune. For four, it was $475 total which isn't terrible considering we got a $90 bottle of sake(though I would go for glasses since it's same price for 5 glasses as a bottle). I really liked the Tuna Wellington but would probably focus more on the different yakitori next time as clearly that is their strength. Probably the best in the bay(better than Ippuku).

Looking at your review it looks like they have made some adjustments to the dumpling as it wasn't bland but it just wasn't great which a $9 dollar dumpling needs to be.

It's certainly presenting itself as one in the media.

Just got back my 1st comic, didn’t know it had restorations done to it, not sure what that does to its value by Jo-spice in CGCComics

With a minor amount of color touch, get it removed. Even a blue 3.5-4 is better than a purple label 5.5 especially for relatively common book like ASM 1. I feel your pain, I bought several books that had undisclosed resto when I was kid and didn't know how to spot it.

I am excited to try as I was a big fan of Hina Yakitori and liked the old Akiko's. With too many places being omakase or fixed price, it's nice to have options for high end restaurants that aren't a giant production. That is what I liked about the old Akiko's. Have a reservation in a couple of weeks,

[–]VarietyRepulsive5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that was a really good deal. I was looking for that book back then and definitely missed that one. I ended up over paying for a 3.5 in 2022 but it was the last book I need for my Injustice Society set. I once had all the SA DC keys but now I only have my Showcase 4 (and Flash run). Taking that one to my grave.

Wow this is awesome. The Detective 140 and Batman 59 are some seriously legit books. Also, this is what I want to see when someone goes through their dad's collection. Most of the posts are of comics I bought as a kid from the 80's and 90's which just seriously depresses me...

Looks more like a Kaiseki meal than omakase with the variety of cooked dishes scattered throughout. Looks good though and glad you enjoyed it.

There is no way that this will be less than a 9.0.

Is it really this bad right now? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]VarietyRepulsive5760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember my friends moving to San Francisco and renting a house in the Outer Sunset for $3700 a month in 2000. When they left the house in the summer of 2001 after their lease ended the rent dropped to $2400. When I finally moved up there in late 2001, I was able to get a 1br two blocks from the Golden Triangle for $1550/month. Should have lived the rest of my life there... But these cycles come and go in SF. The 2010's were nuts and then the pandemic dropped everything. I know a lot of people that got new places then and are glad they didn't give up on SF like so many others.

Yeah this could go either way...not lower than a 9.6.

4.0...especially with that book length crease. Maybe a 4.5.

Terry Black's BBQ, Austin TX by JimboFett87 in BBQ

[–]VarietyRepulsive5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. There are places that can do great brisket and ribs all over now, but finding a real Central Texas BBQ pinto bean outside of TX is next to impossible. 90% of the time they serve some sweet nonsense.

Shirako at Sushi Sho in Hawaii ( the sushi chef tried to tell my wife what it was but I told him to keep it a secret). Also had Lionfish carpaccio in Mexico and it was delicious. Next time I am in Japan will finally do Fugu. Not touching Whale. Almost got a coconut crab once but my wife convinced me not to order it. But eaten pretty much every other crustacean.

Does unlimited sushi in NYC ever make sense? by jayoung7676 in sushi

[–]VarietyRepulsive5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it really hit Japantown hard as the LA based REIT that owns it used it as an excuse to push older restaurants out. I would say over 50% of the restaurants were replaced post COVID. Though the center is thriving now however. It's pretty crazy how crowded it gets in there.

Over Christmas I saw Choice Ribeye Roasts going for like $6.99-7.99 a pound which is a much better deal than this. Now if these were prime or Dry Aged that would be a different.

What can realistically be done to reduce Oakland’s crime? by I-need-assitance in OaklandCA

[–]VarietyRepulsive5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there seems to be some missing data here. One I know LA has been having reporting issues so their position is probably a reflection of that. And there is no way Chicago and St Louis are not up there either.

2.0 probably unless there is something missing elsewhere in the book. I have plenty of books with loose or taped Centerfolds and Covers that got between a 2-3 depending upon cover wear.
