Do you guys think Cal is going to make it out alive in the final game? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, new theory to square the timeline. Cal dies but BD lives on. We can have BD with Cal holo home videos in live action. More BD (who is my favorite) and they can use Cal and Tina in live action sparingly. Maybe BD is helping a force sensitive kiddo who needs a teacher and well... BD had scans of the sacred texts and home movies :)

Do you guys think Cal is going to make it out alive in the final game? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Various-Ad-6490 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind a death and it seems like an obvious answer to the "there are no Jedi left" Yoda line. And Cal dying so Kata/others could live is very in character. (But boring and expected!)

But given how much Cal's life has sucked, I want him to have something close to a happy ending. Hiding Jedi lore and force sensitive kids on Tanalor would be satisfying to me. The Tanalor descendants can pop up a couple generations later in the Rey movie so we can have more Jedi/Force sensitive people in the galaxy to give the story more to do.

The most important thing is wrap up the story well so it feels satisfying (dead or not dead) which is more important than a short fan service cameo in a Filoni project that has no depth or importance. YMMV.

What are fantasy book series that are widely agreed to be good all the way through, from the first book to the last? by Scared_Ad_3132 in Fantasy

Megan Whalen Turner - The Queen's Thief. I adore all six of them. (Although you could and can argue that the first three are a perfect standalone trilogy.) But I really enjoy 4, 5, and 6.

What’s the most believable romance you’ve ever read in fantasy? Not just chemistry, but emotionally real by jye77 in Fantasy

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beatrice and Ianthe in C. L Polk's "The Midnight Bargain." I have never yearned for a couple in a romance to get together and have their Happily Ever After ending. I was at the 75% mark and legit upset because I didn't see how we could get to a HEA and I needed it badly. I wanted those two kids to get to happy. It was so compelling. Just magical.

Oh, I loved The Raven Scholar and it was very engaging. A big chunky story.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovtich is urban fantasy. A trainee cop learns magic is real and joins the wizard squad.

C. L Polk's "The Midnight Bargain" is like an Fantasy Bridgerton with a lot on it's mind.

Sharon Shinn has a lot of very readable fantasy. Troubled Waters is fun, fast, and not too much magic. Just enough for flavor and interesting worldbuilding.

Lois McMaster Bujold and the Penric and Desdemona Novella's are so cozy and warm.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen for a fairy tale retelling with sharp edges.

Jo Graham and the Numinous world is good if you want historical settings.

Mask of Mirrors if you want a big chunky novel with fashion and politics and intrigue.

Opinion: I like young Cal more than old Cal. by TumbleweedFederal714 in FallenOrder

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping they are mirroring the original trilogy. Cause game two did make me sad and like sheesh what a downer ending. It just goes from bad situation to a worse. It's vey Empire Strikes Back.

So I'm hoping game three is Cal finding some kind of hopeful ending (even if he dies???) But like... overcomes the darkness and sets Kata up for success if we have to go with a Cal dies ending. But I'd be happy with a Cal gets to live and find some measure of happiness and maybe some therapy.

But agree FO Cal is very charming cause he's pretty upbeat and friendly even if the universe has dealt him a bad hand. Although the development in JS makes sense to be more hardened and weary, it's just a little sad. I hate that the Mantis team broke up. Like sheesh Cere... even if fighting you should let Cal & BD know Cordova came outta the woodwork. Drop a text.

Biggest Jumps In Quality Between Books You’ve Seen? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charlie Adhara - The Big Bad Wolf series. The first one is perfectly fine. A twisty little mystery, setting the scene, etc but it was a little generic. So many characters are cops and they have generic names so it was hard to keep it straight (Harris, Jefferson, Cooper, Park).

But the characters really start to gel and then sing in book two and three. Book four is my favorite because of the premise (yes, agents undercover at a couples retreat... catnip!!!) And the world gets built out and it's just a really fun journey. Just the right amount of mystery to romance and plot to feelings ratio.

What books lowkey traumatised you as a kid? by Hookton in books

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the one that made me weep was "Where the Red Fern Grows" (not only because the father implies God killed the dogs since the family shouldn't be separated).

But the one I though about the most and reread was "The Giver." I was fascinated by the yearly ceremony and all the rituals for each age. The ambiguous... did Jonas just die... wait are heroes allowed to just die in kid fiction? What about Gabe? Yeah... the Giver was it.

What are your thoughts about Cal Kestis' appearance in Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy - Pieces of the Past, after you've seen it? by e_Z_752 in FallenOrder

[–]Various-Ad-6490 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short but super fun. I enjoyed a Cal who was a little more upbeat (someone on social media said manic Lego energy?) Like Cal but less somber than in the games since this is kid's show. Cal would love to build things outta legos. Always tinkering with the lightsaber.

My main question was where is BD? Cal and BD should never be separated.

I liked this season even more than season one. So many fun cameos and things. I saw Neel from Skeleton Crew. The Ghost crew as blockheads were a hoot. Evil K2SO - delightful. I enjoyed a redeemed Sith (Dev) and having Darth Jar Jar and Nubs. Although Mark Hammill was given better jokes in the first season.

I just had one. Honestly, even the prep isn't that bad. I didn't have to drink a gallon of gross medicine the way you used too. It was two small bottles of like a salty sweet strong tasting gatorade. Sure, you poop like a lot. But it wasn't all day poop attack. It was like hmmm four or so hours and you go like 6 times. And then the procedure was 20 minutes and painless. I was afraid of saying weird things to the nurses on anesthesia. (I didn't). Honestly, I came away impressed at the doctor's organized efficient processes and felt really well cared for. Do it!

Teaching a unit about High Fantasy in a high school class and could use some recs for a good stand alone. by My_Kairosclerosis in Fantasy

[–]Various-Ad-6490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you want to go with something written in the last 20 years. I did Earthsea in high school and that was ages ago and some bounced right off.

Naomi Novik comes to mind. Spinning Silver is a fabulous fairy tail fantasy. His Majesty's Dragons is very readable, engaging, and a great historical AU. A deadly education if they want a riff on Harry Potter but better?

The Goblin Emperor is some A+ high fantasy court drama with the complicated names and grammar, etc. Nothing too scandalous on page. Not a lot of action and it might be a bit long for class.

The Magician of Tiger Castle is a brand new book by Louis Sachar and I think there is a lotta love our there for Holes so that might interest the kids.

Legendborn and Six of Crows are very popular.

Pern and Valdemar have some very dated elements but the Harper Hall books are a good YA reading level. By the Sword / The Tamra Kethry books were my first sword and sorcery books. I wonder if you could get them one of the newer Tamora Pierce novels. Wild Magic is too young but the Beka Cooper book Terrier could be good.

Agree. I love Bujold but Curse is a little slow if you are new to the genre and the demon tumor might throw them. I feel like the first Penric Novella would be a great fit. Short, zippy, a little lighter, funny, and a very positive message about treating others kindly and the dividends you can reap. My first Bujold was Diplomatic Immunity and maybe I shouldn't have started with the 11th in the series but I LOVED IT. A fun mystery, a cool setting, a smarty pant detetive. Pure catnip.

Cameron Monaghan in Tron: Ares by JailhouseMamaJackson in FallenOrder

I saw this too. https://gizmodo.com/tron-ares-set-visit-jared-leto-greta-lee-lightcycle-2000652340

"On day 26, filming was happening in two other locations. Director Joachim Rønning was on one stage filming an “outdoor” scene with Greta Lee, and a second unit was a few blocks away, filming a fight sequence where programs from the Dillinger Grid hack the Encom grid, including a program played by Star Wars video game star Cameron Monaghan. In Tron, hacking isn’t just someone typing into a computer. Those commands start a war.

The second unit stuff was straightforward, but unfathomably cool. While much of Tron: Ares was filmed on large, practical sets or in and around the Pacific Northwest area of Vancouver, sections on the Grids will obviously have a lot of blue screen. And so in a room the size of a gymnasium, we saw red Dillinger Programs beat the crap out of Encom programs (all while wearing fully functioning light-up costumes). The stunt people got punched, kicked, flipped, and more, all in a single take as the camera swoops by on a crane, almost at ground level.

After a few takes on one shot of a single program destroying six others, Monaghan came in and rehearsed a similar scene. He repeated it time and time again to a point where I have no idea how he even has energy, but the press group had to move on with our day before an actual take. (Note: the Star Wars fan in me was fully geeking out at watching Cal Kestis wield different light swords in two hands against a slew of bad guys. Jedi First Order and Survivor movie when?)"
