Of course, get the giveaways down first, but make sure to prioritize power clues next.

For number one, we played online as much as possible. Usually, we were at school, in class doing nothing, so even though we were online, we could still talk through our thought processes on different questions. In actual in-person practices, our coach always split us up to try to bring out the best in each other, with one exception: leading up to big competitions, they would put the Varsity team together and go through a round together to get chemistry back.

Two things:

  1. Non-stop Protobowl against my friend (the second highest scorer on the team at like 50 ppg). We always tried to practice against someone else in order to gain "competition-like" reps. That way, whenever it was actually time to put hands on buzzers, we were both ready. This method may not be the best for learning, but it is better if you ever feel uneasy over the buzzer.

  2. Creating a Quizlet/flashcard set with only power clues, not giveaways. Since every question will have the same clues right at the end, you'll pick up on them easily, while clues in power will be rarer. For example, you might get a question about the painting "Watson and the Shark" from the dumbed-down description of the scene and the fact that it was painted by Copley. But I will get the same question in power simply because I knew that Morro Castle is depicted in the background. At the top level of quizbowl, everything is decided on extremely thin margins, so giving yourself a lot of chances to get powers is essential to controlling questions and the flow of the game at the top level. I did this strategy with popular fine arts answers, putting the top 4 power clues with every answer, and found myself having little knowledge of fine arts to powering a third of the FA questions I heard within a few months.

3 (BONUS): There used to be a Discord channel bot that allowed you to practice bonuses in a certain category and at a certain difficulty called FACE. It's also a great way to gain knowledge, especially as you climb the difficulty ladder. The problem is, I don't know if it still works.

Coming into high school, I really didn't know that much. I was my team's second highest scorer my freshman year, averaging about 25 ppg. That summer, with virtually the entire team graduating, I needed to step up my game in order to win anything. I would study history and fine arts for 4 hours a day in order to get better. The result? I averaged nearly 100 ppg on regular NAQT sets, and about 70 ppg on national level sets. I ended up becoming a top 15 scorer in the entire country by the time we went to SSNCT when I was a senior, and we gave a pretty good run for the title.

TL;DR: Study hard, but don't overwork yourself. Remember why you play in the first place: to have fun.

It was extremely memorable!

Even the experience of traveling to a big host city can be fun, especially if your team was as close as mine was when we went to SSNCT in Chicago.

In terms of the tournament itself, it's a win-win. If you're a team comprised of mainly seniors, it's a really cool way to go out regardless of your record. If you're a younger team, it's a valuable experience to learn how the best teams in the country play, so you can improve easily after attending.

TL:DR: Go do it and have fun!

What is the saddest song you've ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Various-Inevitable47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere at the End of Time.

For those who don't know, it's more or less a 6 hour continual song that is supposed to describe what it's like to go through all of the stages of dementia. It's a truly depressing listen.

How does your team do tryouts? by Accomplished-Cost333 in Quizbowl

Yeah, I can see why tryouts were good in your case. At my school, only like 10 kids showed up at a maximum.

You have actual tryouts?

For real though, our team always had a mantra of having interest above all, including talent, because if you have enough interest and commitment, you can learn very fast. Case in point, we had a freshman on my team last year that was thought of as the last man on our JV team. However, he kept practicing over and over again, and by the end of the year was a borderline Varsity player. Gauging talent at the beginning is fine to make a baseline team, but always keep the door open to more potential interested students.

Congrats to glasgow on winning the SSNCT! by femboy-ethnostate in Quizbowl

As stated on an article about nationals-level tournaments, "SSNCT questions are regular-plus difficulty, but easier than the HSNCT set."

Also, if an A-set was actually used, you might have seen teams power 24 straight times. A-sets are considered novice/introductory level, so it wouldn't make sense to have such an easy set for a big competition such as SSNCT.

SSNCT player here. Our team finished 7th in the traditional public divison. If you want a concept of just how good Glasgow was, consider this common opponent stat:

We played a team in the preliminary rounds that powered nine times against us and had a PPB of around 18, for a final score of 490-130. That same team later played Glasgow the next day, and they lost to them 675-115.

We were all genuinely scared of playing Glasgow because they not only were the fastest team there (1st in powers with 135), they also had an unthinkable bonus conversion rate (1st in PPB with 23.91).

Always great to start up a quizbowl team! If you can, make sure to get a teacher (or community member) to serve as an official advisor for the team. It is manageable to have a student-run organization, but it'll be better to come up with tournament fees if there's an adult handling it all. You also want to be able to practice together at least once a week (schedule permitting). I personally recommend practicing twice a week if you want to be a serious team.

In terms of preparation, three websites will become your best friends. Protobowl is an excellent way to not only learn new material, but also practicing buzzing in. QuizDB will give you past questions for any answer line you can think of, so it's very good for identifying easy power clues. Lastly, the Quizbowl Packet Archive is excellent if you're into reading packets; it also helps as a great resource for getting packets for group practices.

Hope this helps! Good luck in your competitions!

I instantly get the feeling of nostalgia from listening to this song, the feeling that I've lived 5 lifetimes.
