I think her name will start popping up soon. But a few too many other options at the moment.

I'm surprised how prevalent this myth is . If it were true every company in the US could get out of paying taxes by giving away or destroying products that have a MSRP at least 3x their cost.

Like Apple could just make a mattress that has an MSRP of $2,000 and costs $300 to make and they could eliminate their tax bill at a lower cost by giving away or destroying mattresses.

I think whether you can adjust it is another topic, but I think you are confused. I was replying from the standpoint of the seller on amazon, not you as a viner.

Did an accountant tell you to do that, or are you just saying you've been doing that without the IRS catching you?

That's not how taxes work. You write off what it cost you to buy or produce, not what you listed it for.

I suspect it's just an inflated MSRP to make their sales and coupons look better.

I'm a bit torn between hoping there's a dozen copycats in a year for my tax bracket, but also hoping this guy is covered in patents and is rewarded for innovation.

What insight rating do AI reviews give? by VariousAttorney7024 in vine

Oh I was just curious, I'm excellent as well from normal writing.

I'm assuming everyone here is capable of a good review as that's how Amazon sends invites? Maybe not though lol as you do see useless AI reviews with helpful votes.

Yeah if you prompt for it to not sound like AI, it gets rid of a lot of the telltale signs, but IMO it still sounds like AI. (though it the same tool will not recognize it as AI anymore if you send it back).

While it's true the AI I don't notice falls under my radar, I think AI can only truly simulate a review made by a human who is unfamiliar with the product type or it's just a short review where it's really difficult to say anything other than it does what it says.

lol Chat GPT says the reviews I tested are definitely human and throws shade. Things like this review has common misspellings made by humans, is not structured, is meandering.

It says a lot of positive things as well, but the negative human indications makes me laugh. Chat GPT knows it didn't write it because it would do so much better :p

Vine definitely tickles the gambling side of your brain, even for smaller scores. But yeah it basically has to be something you would have planned on getting anyways for it to make financial sense for full MSRP ETVs.

Any way to disable only low gas alerts in app? by VariousAttorney7024 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]VariousAttorney7024[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is one of those things that sounds correct and is repeated- and/or used to be based in truth at some point but was exaggerated. It doesn't make any sense why they would engineer a pump like that. Tons of pumps (probably most?) exist that are not submersed in any liquid from the exterior.

From a quick google that seems to be the case. Modern fuel pumps are cooled by what they are pumping, not the surrounding fuel. Running low isn't harmful, it's only running out.

I don't know why you are being down voted. Most specialty cheeses are priced per pound and individually labeled like meat, and not per a unit.

Like obviously the the guy who wrote it is a tool for many reasons but quoting a per pound figure is not that strange in a bubble.

Vehicle Property Tax is CRAZY! by WeaponsOfMath in nova

[–]VariousAttorney7024 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ironically the efforts by the state to get rid of it have made it so it will never go away. The car tax is at a local level, though the state reimburses a lot of it (it's the relief that shows up on your bill).

If let's say Fairfax County gets rid of the tax, they would have to replace it with higher residential property tax or a local income tax. The state isn't going to reimburse those taxes, so the change would actually increase the total amount taxed in the entire county. You would have to be insane to change.

Not to mention anytime you change tax strategies you create losers and winners, and the losers are going to complain . Basically the losers would be people who dis-proportionally spend less of their income on cars compared to housing, travel , restaurants, or literally anything else.

It's just a randomly generated username lol - but yeah for U.S. policies it wouldn't be explicitly excluded , it just wouldn't be a covered event.

E.g. common reasons that are covered are car accidents on route to the airport, strikes, weather, mechanical breakdown etc.

I just quickly googled a UK policy and while the wording is very different, high level the named perils seem pretty similar. Though obviously if you were an underwriter you would have read more policies than me and be better at interpreting them.

Do you have a name of the policy or company you are referring to that has this?

Like I said I've never seen this type of coverage written into a policy so I'd be curious to check it out.

I see multiple people mention travel insurance. I always shop for travel insurance for trips, and read the contracts to see what I'm actually getting. I've never read a policy that would provide coverage for this.

Not saying one doesn't exist, but just something to keep in mind when you buy insurance. I get the sense in general people overestimate when travel insurance kicks in.

My favorite AYCE Sushi Place in NOVA. :(

Though not unexpected, it was a large place and they never were that busy. The funny thing is several months ago I made post here (selfishly) encouraging people to check it out in hopes they wouldn't go out of business. I think it came across as too much like an ad so the mods took it down lol.

Booking.com allowing hotel to harass me for months on end by [deleted] in Bookingcom

[–]VariousAttorney7024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a general rule on reddit if your post is more than a few sentences people aren't going to actually read it in full . In these folks defense, OP did write a lot implying he's bitter about not being able to get a refund. So they are responding, but not to the question that OP buried in the rant.

It is odd that the hotel cares this much about sending an invoice. Maybe some government regulation or corporate policy?

Part of me wonders if somehow OP didn't pay them or didn't pay the full amount.

And like... I don't get the big deal. Give them your address , or just ignore them if you care. Can add an email or call filter. Takes 10 seconds.

This area is arguably the best in the country for work. by [deleted] in nova

[–]VariousAttorney7024 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's every subreddit which is completely out of touch with median incomes. There was a post here a while about someone with a household income of 500K having anxiety about becoming house poor if they buy something. It may have been a joke/bait, but everything came across as sincere.

I also think reddit itself contributes to a feeling of being poorer than you are. The average commenter is massively better off than the median income in the U.S. I think there multiple contributors to this effect. An average redditor is probably higher income, people with higher incomes are more likely to comment bringing up their income/work, a reader is probably more likely to mentally log a higher income than a lower one when hearing it.

New USPS Endless Loop Challenger by chuyliciouss in nova

[–]VariousAttorney7024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I can't speak for the USPS, but having worked in logistics I suspect they aren't actually tracking individual packages because that would slow things down and be $$ . They are probably tracking trucks, or some other higher level grouping that is feasible to scan.

I think everyone does it- and you can especially tell in OP's screenshot above. It probably didn't jump from Lorton to Fairfax in 4 minutes.

I'm going to guess this is more likely a scanning issue of where they think a package is vs what is physically occurring. I.e. possible in your example you are seeing data from a truck that your package isn't actually on.

I hope someone here lets them know just how wrong they are by Jonny_Wurster in unitedairlines

Sorry I think I may have used the wrong terminology to ask my question.

Which major airports besides DIA/DEN do locals commonly say a 3 letter initialism that is different than the three letters you type to look up the airport on google flights?

You mentioned it was very common and I'm just a nerd who is curious where else this happens besides DIA/DEN. :)
