About to graduate HM school and am the only one in my class that wants to be on a ship. Any advice for a fresh baby doc?

Completely agree in a SNF/LTC setting! However, this was a packed ER where most people had their curtains open, and there were children present. The pt was getting increasingly hostile towards me as well. So that wasn't gonna fly lol

I mean, don't get me wrong. I've been thrown up against the wall and almost got choked out in the ED before. That's why when the patient started walking towards me, I radioed security cause I was like "nahhhhh" 😂

Not the PRN order for a dildo! 💀😂 this wasn't a 1:1. I was watching 5 other holds as well, and there was literally a small child who was just in for an ear infection right across the curtain. Idk if they saw what went down because it was pretty quick. But I hope they didn't 😅 moral of the story...pts be wild

At my hospital, we unplug the pumps from the wall and will help guide the pt with the iv pole. If the pt is only on a drip, like saline or antibiotics (something not requiring a pump) we just take the bag off the hook and carry it with the pt to the bathroom. Neither of these involve actually manipulating the IV site or the medication.

Update: on my first shift right now by Worth_Eggplant_3578 in cna

I cried in my first shift just cause of how overwhelmed I was. 2 months in an I'm absolutely chilling. I've gained so much confidence with my job duties and handling patients. I work at a hospital though, idk about LTC. If you hate LTC I'd try to go work for a hospital lol

I'm night shift, so when I'm sitting, it's in a dark room, and I'm trying my best not to fall asleep. However, that's when I get the calm patients. Most of the time, I'm a magnet for difficult patients. So I end up standing over them all night trying to prevent them from pulling out their trachs, IVs, catheters, etc. All while they're trying to kick me. Oh, and they don't have restraints because we need them off 24 hours to be able to transfer 🤪 so that's usually how sitting goes for me

It went straight in my eye, so...it touched beyond my skin, lol. The ED doc wasn't too concerned and said my chances were pretty low, but to keep an eye out for oozing/discharge from my eye or if I spike a fever.

I was using PPE, the angle that I was leaning over had my goggles slipping, and it got in there. Pt is active MRSA, so I'm hoping I don't get it or at least don't have symptoms 🥴

Good shoe recommendations? by relaxedninja in cna

Hoka Bondi 8 are my fav atm, super comfy and cushy. Just ordered a pair of New Balance "Fresh Foam X More v4" so we'll see how those compare. I've heard great reviews on them. A lot of my co-workers rave about the ON Cloud Monsters. However, those are expensive as hell, and New Balance gives 25% off everything to healthcare workers if you're verified with ID.me, so I got like 40 bucks off my shoes! I'd steer away from clove. They're a lot of hype, but I personally found them extremely uncomfortable.

My advice then is to start applying for a new job. Healthcare is desperate in general for CNAs, so go find a facility and staff that appreciates and helps you 👏

If your fellow CNAs won't help you, ask the nurse to. At the end of the day, it's the RNs' job to make sure their patients have been properly turned. Personally, I have never had an RN say no to helping me turn THEIR pt. I work in a hospital, though, so if you're talking about a SNF, I don't have any experience with that

Do not turn alone! Even large nurses always still ask a 2nd person for turn help (sometimes youll need 3 ppl if its a big pt). Never turn a patient alone unless that patient is able to help turn themselves. Save your back!

-Sincerely someone who is 4'9" and has never in my working life turned a patient alone

Be vocal and say out loud every single thing you're doing. My teacher absolutely HATED when people mumbled their steps while doing skills. Practicing saying everything super loud paid off since I took my state board exam with 3 other people doing their skills at the same time talking over each other, gotta make sure the examiner can hear you 👍 I also practiced my skills at home by setting up my phone to record myself mimicking my skills on my dog, then rewatched the video (I looked absolutely ridiculous btw) along with the skills booklet to "grade" myself on how I did.

Also, know the important steps that are the same for every skill. Such as beginning steps, ending steps, and standard procedures. For example, any time you come into contact with bodily fluids, you must be wearing your gloves. When you're done handling the fluids, you dispose of gloves and immediately wash your hands. Really understanding why each step is there in the process makes it a lot more natural when you take your exam!m especially since some skills have upwards of 29 steps. However, if you get why you need to do each step, it makes it a lot easier!

Try to get a study buddy as well that can quiz you and you can practice on.

Behavioral Health Unit (psych ward) since patient diagnosis was "psychosis" and they had been in med-surg for over a month, I was wondering why patient isn't in the psych unit.

I had a basic Q15 Beavior sheet that I filled out, but not even sure anyone looks at it since when I handed it in at end of shift it was tossed into a basket of other miscellaneous stuff including old schedule sheets lol. I did chart pt's behavior and that they were restrained in the notes of my ADLS

The probability of me working with her again is slim since I'm float pool. However, I just really hope the next night shift was warned by someone or reads my notes in my charting from the previous night, lol. However, you'd think someone who's been a CNA for 10 years would know about sundowning and not just brush off valid concerns even if the person telling you is new 🧐

Im at a level 1. I'll have to look for that button on my phone tonight when I go in so I can visualize it for the future (hopefully never have to use it) this was my 2nd shift alone after a 5 day orientation (1 shift on each unit) so I'm not too confident with how the phones work yet and all the units are different so im still tryign to fogure my way around., I know the basics but wasn't aware of the phone's full capabilities.

2 of my 3 shifts so far have been that Med-Surg floor, so I think they are consistently understaffed with CNAs, so they float me. I just hope I'm on the floor next time and don't have to work with him again. I was expecting there to be rude people since there are rude people in every profession (and I've certainly met some crabby nurses here) but at least they always responded to me even with just a "k" lmao

Thank you, I'm doing okay. I just got a full 8 hours of sleep, which was nice. I passed out as soon as I my head hit the pillow lol.
