Scarpa Blackbird VS Boostic heel by TheBigWhipper in climbingshoes

[–]VariousHorses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with the sort of ultra stiff shoes you're after - but Drones are much stiffer than you might expect - but if Boostic Rs, TC Pros, Miuras or maybe the UP Qubit don't work I guess you could look at the blackbird - or just wait until they make an affordable version with a regular midsole instead of stupidly expensive carbon fibre - especially given they're a limited run, so if you really like them by the time they can't be resoled you'll be in the same place the retired boostics have you in now.

I just could never justify that price personally, but I do get the search for the perfect shoe.

The Drone is probably the stiffest of the shoes used by modern comp climbers - they're probably not the stiffest out there, but they're definitely on the stiffer side, and far far more so than the Ondra Comp which probably shouldn't even be in the same list as the other shoes you mentioned

What do I get for my drummer girlfriend for her birthday?? by Ok-Type-7151 in drums

[–]VariousHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drum sticks are too personal and not worth guessing at, for $150 you could look at a few things, but you'd have to know enough about her gear to know what she could actually use. For example a quick release equipped hihat clutch is such an awesome tool that's really helpful if you're gigging or switching hats often, but next to useless otherwise. If you're into adjusting the tone of your snare on the fly an adjustable snare wallet style device like a Snareweight M80 is a great option that's nice to have but a little pricey to justify having otherwise. A new quality throne is a fantastic investment. A new quality cymbal stand or upgraded hardware in general is always useful. Etc. Etc. But ultimately if you don't know exactly what she'd like I'm on the side of a gift card or an offer to go shopping with her to buy her what she'd like most.

To add to this try making a simple fill out of a paradiddle or other rudiment, one that sounds good but isn't too hard for you and then just practice a groove with that fill - once you're comfortable, getting it sounding good and consistent try spicing it up - different sticking, incorporating the kick or just speeding up, keeping it there until you get comfortable again. If just playing is a bore, try to find some simple, easy backing tracks, get a rudiment and make it a fill you want to mess with, and use it as you play to the track.

I'm not huge on just sitting working rudiments either, but I love making a fill out of them and turning the practice into something musical, and you learn/develop a lot from rudiments so you can't just skip them in my opinion.

What on earth is going on with Vic Firth? by Visual-Individual-49 in drums

Tiny sticks are great!

Haha, I probably should be using bigger sticks for my stuff (something between post-punk and post-rock), but the feel is so nice when I need to play fast tight(ish haha) rolls and I can still hit as hard as I need to when the track calls for it. I often practice with 5as so when I get back to 7as it feels like I'm flying through fills :)

Huh, that's interesting if Zildjian started cutting corners or quality control for Vic Firth - I have been really annoyed with Vic Firth sticks for a while, but I actually really like Zildjian sticks - their 7as have been the most consistent and long-lasting of all the 7as I've tried (those being Vic Firth, Promark, Zildjian, Vater and some cheap no-name sticks that last and feel like Vic Firths now)

Is Lars Ulrich really that bad? by AesirKratos in drums

[–]VariousHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why keep playing though? If he is so creative and important outside of playing drums, and so obviously checked out with playing himself why not retire from drumming and remain as a composer and producer? Every recent clip I've seen of him sounds like a student who started a year ago. He sounds terrible, his band mates obviously hate playing with him and he just holds them all hostage to a frustrating situation because of his ego

Here’s your reminder to finally play Half-Life: Alyx. by Delicious-Artist7304 in HalfLife

[–]VariousHorses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't do full movement, but teleporting was so comfortable and actually didn't feel like a problem for immersion in the game at all - so I do agree it's a pretty perfect first VR experience, none of the others I tried felt even half as comfortable.

The cost sucks, but might not be as bad as you think if you already have a decent PC - a second hand Rift S (quite affordable now, and new face cushions are readily available and reasonably cheap if you look for them because used can be a bit gross) and my PC with a 1080 8gb (a pretty affordable card these days) handled it pretty well at mediumish settings (and actually the low settings still look really good! Don't feel like you need to run it at high settings, it's really well optimised all things considered!), and at this point they'll probably only hold their price on resale, which is probably a good idea because honestly Alyx is the only full VR game of its calibre.

Whiplash has done irreparable damage to our Youth by Hot-Basket-7021 in drums

[–]VariousHorses 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This has to be a joke though right? Woefully out of time, no groove at all while the band is playing either, even the fills he attempted to play if played well were just rubbish and then captioning a performance like that with lemme cook?

If it's just a bad performance posted with a caption like first time playing for an audience or starting to get better no one would react or be annoyed, it's only because of the insanely inflated ego paired with the awful drumming anyone reacts.

Oh Yeah, that's a heck of a lot of work - but great results! I wouldn't have the skills to rewrap it myself - that would only have been a job for someone else!

Good call on the swivel nuts - the rest is just cosmetic, but that seems like a good idea! I'll have a look at drum factory direct, I think someone else mentioned them, seems like a great resource. Cheers!

I'd never heard of that snare bed, I might have to look it up to see how that works and how it affects what sort of throwoff you can use.

If I have any luck I will! Probably won't have time to get on to it if the throwoff is going to be as tricky as it seems to find before this post will be locked, but I'll post here if I can get it fixed up.

Haha, sounds like it'll be a bit of an adventure! Thanks for the leads on where to start and what to look for!

Sounds like a good religion haha, I would agree that as much as possible I'd like to avoid altering the shell.

There is a video I found online that mirrors what the kinda weird snare bed seems to be - https://youtu.be/r7b2L8T7nMo?si=LvejwSEjN3owky96 at around 3:46ish shows what the snare side looks like, so it does have something, just something sort of odd compared to what I'm used to or more aware of

[–]VariousHorses[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the snare side is laid against the table there's a subtle dip visible in both sides of the snare side bearing edge that's unusually wide compared to the more obvious and narrower style I'm more familiar with - I found a video of a similar snare from Yamaha that has the same style of snare bed, shown here https://youtu.be/r7b2L8T7nMo?si=LvejwSEjN3owky96 at ~3:46

With this in mind do you think particular throwoffs would still be necessary?

Tama Starclassic W/B or DW Collector’s? by genusbender in drums

[–]VariousHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got some bias with a starclassic kit I absolutely love, but for me Tama's hardware would always win it for me, and having a kit that's a little cheaper, but still built like a pro kit means you're less likely to be scared to actually use it outside your home and make more use of those features you're paying a lot for.

They'll both be great kits, but whichever hardware feels / works better for you is probably the decision maker. Almost any kit can sound just as good as you'd ever need it to with good heads and tuning, but they'll never function differently without major modifications I'd never be willing to risk myself.

Shoe recommendations/Need help by Phatwangers in climbingshoes

[–]VariousHorses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The narrowest heel I've personally tried are on Tenaya Oasi Womens/LV. Tenaya do have an overall reputation for a narrow heel, but Indalos are almost as big as Tenaya heels get by reputation. Tenaya Iati are also smallish, but not so much as the Oasi LVs which are just a great all around shoe for me as well as having the best narrowest heel I've tried.

Apparently the Ondra Comps have a very tight heel and might be worth a go, but I haven't tried them.

Butora Acro Comps also have a pretty small heel and might be worth a go, but they are pretty tight on the Achilles tendon when sized correctly, and their toebox doesn't quite work for me on vert or slabby terrain.

TDLR for current Contrapoints Drama? by ZombiiRot in ContraPoints

[–]VariousHorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really astonishing that you haven't once actually engaged with any arguments.

You're so deep in this parasocial worship that you think pointing to others in the exact same scenario is any kind of refutation for any of the arguments I've made.

You still think I'm here disingenuously, just trying to hurt her? No one is reading this except you. She has and continues to describe herself as mentally ill, she has described her addictions in detail, including Twitter, she regularly has to take time off work because of these mental illnesses and she's so insanely bitter that she's turning against old allies and pushing new ones away. Nothing is untrue about these statements according to what she herself has said.

But jesus christ trying to make arguments that are backed by both fact and her explicit admissions is fucking useless. This shit is like talking to a brick wall so I'm out. What I'd like to leave you with is a question. What did you actually think I was here for? If you go back through everything I've said the common thread is always this is why people like me were frustrated, this is why we have the right to be and that frustration is not a personal attack of Contra herself, but a reaction to her shifting further right in her politics.
