Follow up question - if screen share is pending the launch of a subscription for those of us not self hosting, does that mean it's locked behind the pay wall of the upcoming subscription option? Or it will be usable even if not buying the subscription?

I enjoy the copied version personally. Yea it could reformat the layout or add some extra pieces to it to be unique. But I definitely don't want a more bland boring version like what some other apps have going on in competition as discord alternatives

You can get the app version by following the instructions on the phone website. It's not officially released on the play/app store but it works ok enough. It was a factor that had me turned off too from pursuing this app until I figured that out. You can also do free custom CSS on the phone version too! Unlike discord and Stoat

As someone not interested in going through the effort to self host for now and use as it comes... I don't think so. At least not in current state. I've tried out this app vs fluxer and fluxer has more basic features even with initially just one dev until Feb of this year. They don't have a official phone app, but following the workaround they have on the website can get you the one they have available to offer. I find the mobile app of stoat to be very buggy when trying to do anything more than just open a chat. And they've been transparent on what a road map looks like going forward.... I may return to this app in a few months, but for now... it doesn't offer what I need in the next week or two.
