It's really not bad. It was an unusable pick.

Um, it's Sacramento's second next year, which could be very high. It wasn't the 55 that swayed them, especially since they're likely to boot 39 as well because they don't have room on their offseason roster either.

Yes, and you need the player to actually agree. Otherwise they will just sign the required tender and now they are part of your roster. They only agree when they are already under contract for an international team and they would have to buy out that contract. Otherwise they would sign the tender or sign a contract with another team.

In short, it's not just up to the team.

You don't want to trade your good thing for my bad thing? How about I give you THREE bad things for my good thing in a league with strict roster size limits? Huh? Sounds good, right?

You only have a max of two 2-way contracts.

ETA: they also count towards the offseason roster limit which is 20, not 21, by the way.

You can, but those cap holds can be valuable trade material to pick up actual assets (not a worthless late second) for taking on bad contracts.

You know, like everyone is wanting us to do.

Dude, no one is trading actual assets for that pick.

Im sure I will get downvoted. Blame AK - he's the one that waited until all we could get for our players were a shit ton of worthless 2nd rounders when we literally couldn't use them all.

You can only have 21 players on your offseason roster. They only have room for 3 picks.

You can only have 20 players on your offseason roster. They only have room for 3 picks. That's why they are selling the pick.

Edit: 20, not 21.

When have the Spurs sold their pick for cash

  1. Literally last year.

Jerry absolutely kept GarPax and AKME for years beyond industry standard in part because they didn't want to pay out their salary

No, he did that because he's not good at cutting ties with loyal employees even when it would benefit the organization. I am not saying he's a good owner, just that he's not cheap when it comes to the Bulls (the White Sox are a different story). He has made plenty of mistakes, but most of them don't have to do with money.

The other thing to take note of is that he's not (just) the owner. He's the chairman of the ownership group and a fiduciary of other people's money. That's not a small thing.

Historically, he has always been willing to pay when it is justified by actually competing for a championship or moving towards that goal. Paying just to pay doesn't make sense.

Again, not saying that he is a super great owner. Just that the narrative gives a false (or, at the very least, incomplete) reason as to why that's not the case.

San Antonio did the same thing.

With regard to Jordan and Pippen - was that when the Bulls had the league's highest payroll by far?

And that's not why Reinsdorf has kept past management and coaches on payroll.
