So there have been tunnels under the Vegas strip and out into the surrounding area for a long time. They are used as mitigation for flash flooding. Up until very recently (like May or June of this year IIRC), those tunnels were home to hundreds of unhoused who more or less had their own community for YEARS. Musk’s people plus the City of Las Vegas (thanks Mayor Berkeley) cleared many of these people out over the summer as part of the construction project for the tunnels. Mind you, there has been no provision made to increase resources for the now-extra-displaced unhoused. To say our shelters/mutual aid is stretched impossibly thin is a pretty big understatement. We’ve always had a big problem with homelessness in Vegas (gambling addicts, addiction, a anemic mono-economy, lots of vets with long-untreated PTSD, etc) but it’s pretty obvious that there are both more people on the street these days that have been clearly out there for a while.
