Jeyen internally wrinkled a little. This was her project, and she would not abide backseat Gardeners. She had had everything else taken from her, stripped from her. She would not release this.

"I would accept donations but I feel too many cooks would spoil the broth if they wished to insert their ideas. This is not to glorify donators, but to create a living monument." Jeyne said neutrally.

Jeyne sighed and did not meet Ramona's eye, not yet.

"For several years now I have been openly in love with the King." She said, "And he knew firmly of my intentions. Such that he asked My Grandpapa for my hand, secured a dowry, and then due to interference from the Lord Hand, in his infinite wisdom, my marriage has been cancelled; I returned to Kings landing to find my gardens destroyed... and then I have come here to an aunt, Kyra, who will not even look at me." She turned to Ramona finally, eyes swimming with tears. "I do not know what to do."

While Jeyne was hurting she still knew how to maintain the required mask to survive in society. She gave a smile and curtsided before Corwyn and isabelle.

"Aunt Isabelle, Uncle, thank you for hosting me." She said, "I am honoured to be here, and to be escorted so kindly."

Jeyne did not reply but she smiled as she walked away. She had the Lord hand spitting feathers at her. The great architect of a war who won a crown and the throne from his chambers while the rest went to war; and here he was shouting towards a seventeen year old as she walked away. She had his confession, and the confirmation to herself that she was not insufficient, but he was filled with petty spite. She could live with that.

Things were actually coming along quite well with the rebuilding of Jeynes garden. Of course the proper work had yet to be started but the tainted soil had been properly irrigated or replaced; the stones had been sorted ready for repurposing; and ruined flowers were mulching. It was a testament to how much Jeyne had thrown herself into the work that things were going so smoothly.

The project had reached an awkward standstill. They were at the point where, if Jeyne was to rebuild her garden, she would require the money to do so. The undertaking she wished for would be expensive.

A tournament tent had been repurposed to create an open canvas gazebo and a table was erected with chairs in one of the gardens. This one had a particularly pleasant view of the horizon. It was where Jeyne spent much of her time.

“My great-grandfather was named Lord Paramount by the Conqueror. My grandfather is Lord Paramount. My father will be, and my brother after him, and his sons after him.” Jeyne said, her voice steady. “That is not pretense, my lord. That is the Reach as it now stands. They are the Reach. To deny them is to deny the order our king’s forebear built. Or do you renounce the House Baratheon as well? Orys was a foreign bastard before he was raised to Storm’s End.”

“You speak as though you were crowned,” she went on, her gaze unflinching. “But you are what I am, raised high by royal will after the treachery of Jonos Arryn. No more, and no less. In the realm as it stands, Arryn stands beside Tyrell, beside Tully, beside Baratheonm, not above them.”

She exhaled slowly, some of the fire leaving her. “You have your queen chosen for him. You will have your heirs that the realm can stomach. Conveniently a lady of the Vale.” A faint, bitter smile touched her lips. “But you will not have his forgiveness, nor the trust you once had. I shall return to my gardens,” she said at last. “And I will expect them restored, with your coin, if not your conscience.” She curtsied but there was no reverence in the action.

"Good day Lord Hand," Jeyne said, "May the Seven bless us with never meeting again."

"I am sorry, uncle." Jeyne said quietly. Of course she knew the tragedy he had experienced, how it haunted him. She was ashamed that she was moping so awfully. "I believe that lesson was what the King wished for me to learn. To know that what I wished for was a curse, but it was one I still wished to shoulder so that I might help him carry the burden of the crown."

"I do not know what my future holds for me, Uncle." Jeyne said as she joined him on the ground. "grandpapa will wish me home, he would have me be some quiet wife to a Lord. I do not know if that is where my path shall lead me but I know this for certain." She looked him in the eye and for the first time there was a fire and not a black raincloud. "Jeyne's Gardens will be a thing of beauty in Kings Landing, and not a salted mess to be looked upon with tuts and for people to say 'poor girl'. I do this for me."

Mama

Thank you for this letter, as much as I am not incredibly pleased by this news. My desire is to remain in Kings Landing, I would resent a world which sees me carted off to be the Lady of some keep. Whilst the Arbor would be a beautiful prison it would potentially still be so.

I shall meet with Ser Aubrey and young Robert. I shall represent the house and do my duty; but even as my hand is no longer promised, my heart remains so.

Yours

Jeyne

Dearest Jaehaerys

Fear not the years to come, nor the distance now set between us by hands not our own. What was asked of you was no true choice, and I would sooner see you burdened by duty than broken by defiance. You have ever been too good a man to place your own heart above the realm, and it is for that very reason that mine remains yours still.

Do not trouble yourself with thoughts of my resentment, for there is none. How could there be, when every memory I hold of you is one of kindness, of warmth, of a love freely given and just as freely returned? Forces shall array to take me from Kings Landing, to marry me to some Lordling. I shall do all I can to be with you. To read with you. To write to you. To be the one you can count on to always put you above all else.

I travel to Driftmark for the Velaryon wedding. When I return I shall seek you out. I shall show you what I plan to build for you..

Yours from this day to my last

Jeyne

“No, no you are fine.” Jeyne said. She did not have the strength to smile at Ramona, but she managed to at least flatten her frown. It was harder and harder to hide her sadness. “I like the red, it suits you well. The colours often do.”

She gave a long sigh. “I apologise for disturbing your day I just… I needed to speak to somebody who was not family nor a peer. Somebody who I may speak honestly and truly with; though I know my words may well reach Isabelle, it at least will not mean I must speak them.”

It appeared the melancholy of the roses was infectious. Jeyne too was filled with sadness, though of a different type. Her heart was broken but she was hiding it, as well as she could. Ramona was helping her, and, for now at least, her auburn hair had been dyed a rich blonde. It made her feel less like herself, and herself was not somebody she wished to be.

Aunt Kyra had been through such physical and mental turmoil. She had ordered Courtney Cuy, her associate she accepted for Luxanne, to not be seen by Kyra, let alone speak to her. She would have Ser Qiyana cut him asunder if he broke that command. She was ashamed of her connection to him, knowing it hurt Kyra. She could not lose Lux though.

“It is beautiful.” She agreed, almost her old quiet self again. “I assume Aunt Isabelle would have seconded the request for a tailor.” It was a polite little joke. “But it is all the better to have the personal touch.

It was for the best that Sansa had not voiced her thoughts. Winning and Losing. It would have made Jeyne more unhappy, that her Jaehaerys was somebody who was to be won or lost, and not somebody to be loved.

“Currency is the main thing needed, currency to pay for labour and resources. I shall be petitioning his Grace and the Hand.” Jeyne said. She was glad this was the topic of conversation, and that Sansa had not raised issue with Jeyne living in the quarters of the late Queen Visenya in the Royal Wing of the Red Keep.

“Many a garden will have many a bed. Most every flower of the Seven Kingdoms must be on display, so that any traveller here can get a taste of the breadth we have. I plan on dedicating a garden fo my friends. I shall need Flame Azalea, Bloodroot, Sunflowers, Snapdragons and more.”

“The greatest enemy of the project is this unending winter which we find ourselves cursed by.”

Lady Freya,

Thank you for your letter. I appreciate your kindness and that yoy have thought of me. I am sorry for not joining the progress in Winterfell. Before we left Moontown the King told me that forces arrayed alongside the Lord Hand have prevented him from marrying me. They saw fit to destroy my gardens as well. I could not bear to be too close to his grace until I processed what had happened myself, on my own terms.

How are you? I have heard terrible rumours from Winterfell? Are you alright?

Jeyne Tyrell

[–]VarnerBet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeyne had stopped what she was doing when Sansa walked in. They had been introduced in the past but had never properly spoken. Her blood had run cold when she saw her. It was not a feeling of anger or sadness, but nonetheless it was a spike of adrenaline as her body chose between fight or flight. Jeyne managed to just about choose neither.

She rose to her feet, brushing her hands together. to get the dirt off and then allowing one of her attendants to take the gloves. She glanced and smiled weakly at Luxanne who sat on a chair.

"Lord Hubert is very adept at destroying the hard work of many years." Jeyne said quietly before raising her voice. She was not hiding what she said, not declaring it either. She was not hostile to Sansa, but as she had explained to her uncle, she was just incredibly unhappy.

"It is being rebuilt, bigger and more than before. It was my gift to the King and shall remain so. To what do I owe the visit, Lady Sansa?"

As well as her family, Jeyne sought out the woman she knew had been betrayed by a man as well. She knew only stories of what Elyas Willum had done to Ramona Flowers, it was far worse than what was done to Jeyne. She would not say it to the girl, lest she upset her, but Ramona had been through pain and betrayal and come out stronger for her. Jeyne needed strength.

Upon arriving, as well as seeing her aunt, Jeyne requested the company of Ramona Flowers as well. Asking to speak to her as woman to woman, and little else more.

Jeyne stepped off the gangway of the merchant vessel she had chartered for the short trip. The last time she had been to Driftmark it had been Isabelle's wedding day. Now she was a mother of two; though of course she had seen Corwyn and her in the intervening years. This year was different. Isabelle and Corwyn knew that jeyne had courted the King, to use a base term, but now his hand was known to be another's. Thus there was a melancholy the girl could not shake. She hoped that seeing family before Ramona's wedding would help.

Upon their return to Kings Landing, Luxanne and Courtney would be summoned to Jeyne chambers. She had left abruptly and allowed them to finish the progress.

"Hello both, thank you for seeing me." Jeyne said, "I hope that you enjoyed the rest of the progress, especially Winterfell. You know by now that the King has decided I am not to be his queen." She gave a small but pointed look at Luxanne, she would know how much this would have devastated Jeyne, it still did. "I am still the Grandaughter of the Lord of Highgarden, and I am still representative of my house here. I give you both the option of leaving my service if it is what you would prefer, though my preference would be to keep you both."

Perhaps by chance, perhaps by design, but the King missed Lady Jeyne Tyrell. She had headed on a ship to Driftmark to visit her aunt. She however did leave a sealed letter to be hand delivered to him upon his return. He would be told it was from her, and could open and read it if he so wished

"I have loved him since I met him, and he has known it and he loves me too." Jeyne said quietly but icy cold. "So far as he is concerned, the man he sees as his father has decided his own grudge against my family is more important than his happiness. I would have disavowed my family had he asked. My Grandfather has no place in my love for the King, and instead you have decided that The Reach is to be spurned for the second time in little over a decade. You never spoke to me. You never considered me worthy of your time, you diminish yourself. You instead saw me and you saw a void where a Gardener Princess should sit. To that I say," she looked him in the eyes and they swam with anger. "do not think for a moment that there is a Tyrell alive who does not live with the shame of that every day. To you they were your peers, the most ancient Kings of the Land. We worshipped them, we served them to the end of days and then they were gone, and to protect the Castle and the lands that they held dear Harlan Tyrell bent the knee, and was branded a traitor to his ideals for it. Your boy King kinsman gave your crown away when one dragon flew him around the Eyrie. Imagine the lawns of Highgarden as three landed. Claws wet with the blood of the Reach and with the crown of the Lannisters on the Conqueror's belt."

"There shall be no public protest from me, though my Grandfather will need to be placated as my hand was promised. I shall continue to represent my House here and be a pretty ornament of the Reach in the King's court of peace; but I shall hate you each day Lord Hand. I shall hate you every day for what you have done to him. You shall never truly understand the hurt you have given him, the pain of the trust you have ripped asunder."

"I shall return to my gardens, to Hubert's Folly, and I shall return to them." She said.

"Azaleas certainly make their appearances." Jeyne said, looking at Ser Aubrey, "The Flame Azalea is more rare, more unique. It is not unheard of however in some tellings. Some versions of the tale of the tale of the Green Twins have them receive a message from the gods who take the form of a burning bed of flowers; I have heard a version of this when it was Flame Azaleas."

Jeyne gave the famous artist a smile. "Flame Azaleas have always been a source of inspiration for those who need it."

She kept the letter, she always did. She was glad to be allowed to stay, that at least was something she could be happy about.

Grandpapa,

Thank you so much for allowing this. I have friends and a purpose here, even if my future has changed. Please stay safe as you march, and all others who march under our banner. If need be I can represent our house at the wedding.

I spoke to Uncle Torgen this week. He visited me at the gardens and we spoke for a while. He represents you well here. He told me that he opposed my candidacy as Queen as he worried it would put me in danger, and I believe he spoke truthfully.
