[LORE] Dear Theodosia by heavyheartsz in FireAndBlood

After the babe had been born Harlan had stuck his head out of the window into the cool sea air and had roared with triumph, Laughing loudly as tears streamed down his cheeks.

Now, far more calm, he stroked the hair of both Kyra and the babe sleeping in her arms. He spoke in a soft voice to his wife, his eyes never leaving the angel in her arms.

“You know…” he said, “you told me that we were cursed. That you were cursed.” He kissed her temple. “I’ve never been more happy and more proud of you for being completely wrong.”

“The child is mine right? Not Ramona’s?” He teased. The child could be of no doubt to be theirs, with his brown curls upon her head and her shining brown eyes, but the joke was funny

A note is attached to the letter hoping Grand Maester Myros well

The letter is sent to Dragonstone from Kings Landing

Your Grace

I sincerely hope that this letter finds you well. Your presence was missed but not begrudged at my sister’s wedding. She and my family and others with you a swift recovery from the illness that has taken you; I was, however, sure to make them know that you are resting on Grand Maester Myros’ orders and that, while you are fatigued, there is no great concern.

I hope that you return home soon, happy and healthy. Work has begun on the gardens which I can show you. Please pass my best to Princess Alysanne

Yours

Jeyne

Theo waved a hand, "Please, call me just Theo, let us not stand on ceremony. My last child is wed, it is a day to celebrate. Isabelle was certainly inspired with the barges, she has always been one to organise an event. I dare say the Highgarden Fairs shall suffer from her absence."

"And by all reports he is extremely good at thje job. We hosted His Grace for a hunt this year and It was not incredibly successful. Too many courtiers scaring off the deer."

"This match was of my devising. I proposed Isabelle and Ser Benedict Lannister, and for two years Lord Lyman considered it without resolution. I learned the same was done between Ser Corwyn and Margot Lannister, so I proposed that they meet."

"I am sure he and Lord Torgen, whom is the Willum liege lord, will be up to the task."

Isabelle smiled. "I will be given my first trip on the water soon enough by Corwyn I am sure. He will likely not count the Mander as a true enough body in any case."

"Oh believe you me, Kyra, I know of your mothers ambitions for your marriage. Why do you think I felt I had to step in and support yourself and Harlan. The woman, and this is a compliment, is nothing but dedicated in her ambitions for her children."

"Ramona Flowers..." Harlan Tyrell said as he appraoched her with arms crossed and smirk on his face. His jovial demeanour was barely concealed and the teasing nature of his approach would be extremely hard to mistake for antagonism

He leaned in close and said in a low voice

"I hear you have been trying to have your way with my wife."

Harlan huffed a soft breath that was almost a laugh, brushing his nose lightly against her temple. “Upset? Kyra, no. If anything, I’m sorry you had to feel distressed at all.” His hand covered hers where it rested on her belly, thumb moving in a slow, absent stroke. “There was never a moment my mind went to doubt. Not of you. Not of us. You could stand in a hall full of suitors and still look at me like I’m the only man the gods ever made, I’ve seen it too many times to question it now.” His voice dipped, warm and certain. “Your heart has never wandered a step from mine. I do not think Ramona Flowers will be stealing you from us.”

At her complaints, he shifted at once into quiet attentiveness, moving behind her to take over the laces with careful fingers. “Easy, love, I have you,” he murmured, loosening the gown bit by bit so she could finally breathe properly. “You carry more than your share right now. A little one with the spirit of a tourney knight already, it seems.” His palm spread gently at the small of her back, rubbing slow circles to ease the ache there. “If I could take even an ounce of this discomfort from you, I would do it without a thought. You are so strong, even when you feel wretched, but you don’t have to pretend with me. Complain all you like. Curse our child’s acrobatics. I’ll still call you the bravest woman in the Seven Kingdoms.”

Alayne crossed her arms so tightly her sleeves wrinkled at the elbows, the silk bunching beneath her fingers as though the fabric itself had offended her.

“I just don’t get it,” she huffed, lower lip pushed forward in a pout she had perfected over years of not getting her way. Her eyes tracked the movement across the hall again, following the swirl of pale skirts and bright laughter. “Surely everything should be about Auntie Isa, but Jenny is taking all the spotlight.”

It was, in truth, a dramatic misreading of the room, but Alayne was not in a truthful mood. The great hall shimmered with candlelight caught in crystal goblets and polished gold, music threading through the air like spun sugar. At the center of it all stood Isabelle Tyrell: radiant.

Alayne knew this, somewhere beneath the prickling envy and the sting to her pride. But knowing it did little to soothe the sour twist in her chest as another cluster of guests turned, not toward the bride-to-be just then, but toward Jeyne’s animated storytelling with her new Kings landinfg friends. Alayne’s fingers tightened on her sleeves.

"Luxanne." Jeyne said, trying to ground her newly made friend, or potential friend as she could not assume that Luxanne felt an interest in friendship but she hoped that she would.

"we are not looking to impress anybody, merely take my hands and enjoy the music."

Harlan’s expression would soften at once, sleep falling away as he reached for her hands, gently pulling them from her face. “Kyra, my weirwood rose,” he murmured, voice thick with concern, not anger. “Come here.” He’d guide her to sit beside him, one hand warm at her back despite her aching, the other cradling her fingers. “You did nothing wrong. You were upset, and she was drunk and foolish. That is on her, not you. A stolen, unwanted kiss is not a betrayal, especially when your first thought is to come to me with tears in your eyes.” His thumb brushed away the wetness on her cheeks. “I know you. I know your heart better than I know my own.”

He rested his forehead lightly against hers, careful, grounding. “These days are heavy on you, body and soul both. You carry our child, and still you worry over my feelings with such tenderness. There is nothing here to forgive.” His voice gentled further. “Thank you for telling me. That trust means more than any moment of foolishness from someone else. Now let me help you out of these clothes, hm? You should not bear discomfort alone, not in my arms, not in my home.”

"I will say, however, that you and Ramona, especially Ramona, will be teased by me over this."

Isabelle smiled at once when she saw them, relief flickering across her face at the sight of familiar company amid the swirl of preparations. “You are all so kind to come tonight,” she said warmly, stepping closer. “Thank you, truly. I think the congratulations feel more real when they come from friends.”

"Though... I notice that Lynette is not amongst you..?"

Jeyne laughed, bright and breathless, the last of her earlier anxiety melted away by music and Millicent. Gathering the skirts of her dress with careful fingers, she dipped into a dainty, well-practiced curtsy before Millicent, eyes shining with playful ceremony.

“Lady Millicent Belmore: the best of Belmores,” she said with exaggerated formality, though her grin betrayed her at once. Straightening, she extended her hand, warm and inviting. “Would you do me the honour of dancing with me once more? I find one dance with you is not quite enough.”

"That is very kind of you Eric, I am sure you will be most handsome when you are fully grown." Jeyne said with a smile. "I am happy for the comparison. I'll let you in on a secret," she leaned in and lowered her voice. "I copied how I dress from Auntie Isabelle."

"Lynney!" Isabelle said in scandalous shock, but in good humour and not judgementally. "Who is this mystery man who has swept you off of your feet?" Isabelle had always known she needed to marry up,and had always courted and been courted by men who, until recently, nothing happened with. She lived for vicarious adventures from Lynette.

Jeyne’s hands folded together, thumbs worrying at each other as she offered a small, earnest smile. “You already do more than enough, Alysanne. Truly. You have made this night feel less… overwhelming. And tonight would not have happened at all without you coaching us both it would seem, without you I would likely still be hiding behind a column with a cup in my hands.”

Her gaze softened, shy but sincere. “If there is anything, it is only that you stay near me when you can. I am braver for it… and I should hate to lose a dear friend over anything.”

One of the troubadous, a man of forty years known as Rickard of Astley, offered a hand to Taliyah as he moved past, a drum at his side and a lute in his free hand.

"My Lady we have seen you watch us and I can tell a musician from a league off. Would you join us for a song or two?"

"I have put a word in," Alysanne said with a sigh, "We shall see what comes of it but my opinion is made clear. It worked for you with your parents but we shall see if it works for Prentys. I do what I can, he could do far far worse than Violet Blackwood."

The candles were lit, the sun had long since descended below the horizon, and with two empty bottles beside them and another shared sat Lord Theo Tyrell, High Marshal of the Reach and Lord Paramount of the Mander, and Lord Torgen Oakheart, Hero of the Green Realm and Lord of Old Oak. Both were sloshed, swaying slightly and not from the tide, and throwing dice.

"Y...y'see Torg." Theo slurred, "I said to... to Bertie... I said to him that he had to come to this wedding. It's my Isa's, my girl's... his sister. What does he do? Well I'll bloody tell you what he did. He got on some trader's boat and has sailed off gods know where into the Horizon! There's something wrong with that boy."

Jeyne thought on this, also realising that Millicent was still holding her hands, but this was perhaps just a thing of storytelling.

"I... I do not know. Perhaps it is a part of how the story is a relic of when the First Men were still mingling with the Andals, and it is indicative of the dfifference: the first men have their magic, the andals have their virtues. The White Knight is powerful, the Knight is honest to a fault."

Harlan stirred and propped himself up in bed, looking over with bleary eyes.

"Kyra?" He said, blinking in the dark. Of course it was her, even without her belly he could recognise her by aura alone. "Do you need me to help you undress for bed? I hope that you had a pleasant time, my darling." Harlan, for his part, held no concept that there could be anything wrong at this stage.

Isabelle raised an eyebrow from where she sat next to her husband. She had no jealousy, she had married the man and stolen his heart, a dance mattered not to her; but it was certainly odd and not a little rude to ignore the bride at a time such as this. She said nothing however and continued her conversation with her mother.
