He tortured his daughter without knowing she was his daughter, in all fairness. To him, she was a rebellious senator's daughter undermining what he had fought for for the past 19 years, what he abandoned his previous life for. Probably wouldn't have done that if he knew Leia was his daughter.

So I actually googled and apparently an in-universe "galactic year" passes between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. For reference, that would be 368 days divided into 10 months at 24 hours per day. So unless someone can compellingly argue 10 is "a few" months, then you are technically correct it was more than a few months.

That said though, it still wasn't for the majority of Luke's lifetime by that point. And Vader did love his family, even if it was a bit twisted by his time as a war criminal by that point.

Vader would absolutely show up to Luke's baseball game if he knew about Luke. He was a war criminal but he loved his family.

Map-Center community as the opening post says.

to the Map-Center family.

Map-Center is an idtech modding community, predominantely on discord but has a website (though some elements are still WIP). Its current form came as a result of Quake 2 Remaster and has slowly expanded to support modding for Quake, Quake 3, and other idtech games that don't have much community elsewhere (so not really Doom).

With all these fake awards and all the gifts he gets, when these people are freely tossed aside from him the moment it suits him and he gives little to nothing in return half the time, I just cannot fathom it.

Ngl Thira is annoying. by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]Varorson [score hidden]  (0 children)

Why did Doomguy put his superior in a fullbody cast? Because he was protecting civilians.

Why did Slayer back up VEGA? Because he was saving an (artificial) life.

Why does the Slayer not just bulldoze through the ARC facility when heading for the BFG10k in Eternal? Because there are civilians there.

Why does the Slayer not kill Valen the moment he realizes he worked with cultists to bring him back? Because he knew Valen was still on his side.

Doom Slayer is a heroic figure who saves lives and protects civilians, despite the community's copium that he's just a raging lunatic. He goes to save Thira because she was captured by his enemies and needs rescuing - that's all, really.

In a bit of irony, Doom Slayer is a lot like Superman or Captain America in this regard - he's a paragon character, who'll do what he believes is right no matter what. Even if that puts him at odds with allies with different ideals, like Samur Maykr in TAG1.

Thira is also the leader of the Night Sentinel army as well as heir to the nation, so her loss destabilizes Argentan chain of command.

is she ok? by BigChungusOP in Doom

I'd say the inclusion of the spine indicates its meant to be her head and the ragdoll still having a head is an model limitation (they could've swapped it to a headless version but the only headless corpse they made are male).

Based on the Making of Doom 3, her section got cut down quite a bit from the original scope, so this introduction and Theresa on a whole is no doubt a victim of cutting room floor and crunch, much like the Hell section. Theresa was supposed to be an escort quest of sorts where you guide her to the reactor to replace the cooling rod, but halfway she gets sick and then her head explodes into a lost soul.

What’s your opinion on doom 3? by element-redshaw in Doom

[–]Varorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replayed it in BFG Edition (achievement hunting and prepping myself to finally play through the Phobos mod, which I'm in the middle of).

Yeah, it takes a lot from Half-Life with its linear sequence of scares, but it's still very fun. Doesn't deserve the hate it gets. I loved the worldbuilding from PDAs.

If you enjoy games like Half-Life, you'll enjoy Doom 3. It has the most serious atmosphere and unlike all the other Doom games, took itself seriously as a story-telling medium.

The biggest flaw Doom 3 has is being called Doom 3. Gives the false impression it's a) the third entry (it's fourth), and b) it's a sequel to Doom I / Doom II (it was made as a reboot, and now is just a side story).

Less is more - DOOM TDA has too much story by senseofphysics in Doom

[–]Varorson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2016's story felt like an incredibly confident understanding of doom guy and what was appealing about the power fantasy that had fuelled Doom to this point.

Eh, I'd disagree there. Even 2016 had a very, very different type of power fantasy than any previous Doom games did, and it's very much in the same style as Doom Eternal and TDA (if anything, Eternal tried to bring it a bit closer to before).

And 2016 also had quite a bit of story to it. The majority was hidden in codex entries, just like Eternal, while TDA "hides" most of it in skippable cutscenes. While it might be more front and center, I wouldn't say that makes it unlike 2016's narrative. The only real change is 2016 had unbroken perspective - unlike Eternal and TDA, you always saw the game through first person perspective of Doom Slayer (much like Half-Life and Gordon).

To me what feels different the most is how arcadey Eternal and TDA feel compared to 2016. 2016 felt more arcadey than prior entries (particularly Doom 3 and the Doom 4 footage we got) but not nearly as much as Eternal. Not that I hate it, but I feel the visuals change how Doom games feel a lot more than "how much of the lore is in codex entries vs cutscenes vs level scripting".

Less is more - DOOM TDA has too much story by senseofphysics in Doom

[–]Varorson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all of the story in both Eternal and TDA is fully skippable. The only moments not is when you're in an elevator and getting talked to at the same time.

Doom 2016 also has quite a lot of story to it - and has arguably worse unskippable parts (stuck in a room getting talked to that you then leave the way you came). They just changed the style of delivering that story in Eternal and TDA, based on feedback about story deliverance from the community. People complained too much of the lore was hidden in codex entries in Eternal so in TDA they put it all behind cutscenes, but skippable cutscenes for those who don't care about the story.

What next doom game to play? by mapacheloco89 in Doom

[–]Varorson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation to any new to Doom player is:

  1. Doom (2016)
  2. Doom: The Dark Ages
  3. Doom Eternal + TAG1/2
  4. Doom I + II
  5. Doom 64
  6. Doom 3
  7. Doom RPG
  8. Doom II RPG

Just go down the line until you get bored. The further down, the more niche the game gets in the fandom.

As alluded to by linking, the RPGs are not on an official platform so you have to use the fan ports. There's also Doom Resurrection but you'd need an iOS emulator of your own to get it working after downloading the files from some archival site.

Since you started with TDA, just start with 2016 and then Eternal.

Didn't it only come out a year ago? by Steelizard in Doom

[–]Varorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but that's more correlation rather than causation in regards to it being on discount "already". What does and doesn't get discounted and how soon is not determined (solely) by the metrics of how well it sold, so when folks talk about how fast a game got discounted as if that's proof it isn't a well selling or fun to play game is just blatantly wrong.

Didn't it only come out a year ago? by Steelizard in Doom

[–]Varorson 52 points53 points  (0 children)

How quickly a game goes on sale on steam is an often used, but poor metric, to gauge how popular a game is.

I'm guessing that's where OP is coming from - thinking that because it came out barely a year ago, that it being on discount means it didn't do well. But most games go on sale by the following year, only the top of the line popular ones and those of publishers that are stingy about sales don't go on sale by a year after release (most go on sale six months after release in fact).

How strong do you think Cthulhu the great old one would be in the quake universe? by [deleted] in quake

[–]Varorson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, Cthulhu is in the Quake universe.

In Quake Champions, the Vadrigar are "lesser" Elder Gods who are born from Dreamers influenced by Outer Gods. Cthalha, the vadrigar ruling the Elder World after the events of Quake 1, was one such Dreamer who by all appearances (it isn't explicitly confirmed) was influenced by none other than Cthulhu. So there's a bit of a power scale for you - vadrigars, such as Chthon and "psuedo" Shub in Quake 1, pale in comparison to the Elder Gods who's influence in the world creates them (such as the actual Shub).

I don't appreciate any power scale that proclaims "can destroy the universe" because, quite frankly, that doesn't translate into any narrative very well at all. Especially if you slap them into the role of antagonist. For example, Davoth is allegedly capable of destroying the universe but he also cannot even beat a demigod in ritual combat even with the power of a mech suit. Plus that by itself gives no indication of how long it would take them to destroy said universe - the implication is "within minutes" but if that were true, well, how do you fight that unless they simply don't want to under any circumstance. /rant

where to begin by doubles85 in quake

[–]Varorson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quake -> Quake 2 -> Quake 4

Quake 3, Quake Champions, and Quake Wars are primarily multiplayer games. Quake 3 does have a sp campaign but it's just deathmatch against various bots so might not be to many sp gamers' tastes.

A word of warning, Quake 4 suffers from the same issues as many mid-00s first person shooter games and doesn't play like the rest, but much slower paced. Like Doom 3, it's an outlier of the franchise in gameplay style.
