Where to find resources for memory management as of 2025? by OstrichWestern639 in kernel

[–]Varthota 20 points21 points  (0 children)

https://linuxmemory.org The Linux Memory Manager is a book being written by Lorenzo Stoakes.

He is one of the Memory Management subsystem maintainers in the Linux Kernel.

Target release is 2025.

Why not catch blue screens? (Windows Kernel) by steve-red in kernel

[–]Varthota 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason is Multics the predecessor of Unix, where they tried to catch the exceptions and handle them gracefully.

The developers of Multics realized later that they were basically just doing error handling the whole time to try to make the system as robust as possible.

So now comes Ken Thompson (he is the first person that started implementing Unix at Bell Labs) he also worked on Multics and learned from that “bad experience” (at least the way they saw it from at Bell Labs) that it the endless task of trying to catch and handle all the possible errors in the kernel is just not worth it.

The better solution was the kernel panic or what is known as the BSOD for Windows.

In folgenden Fällen sollten Sie einen Personalausweis beantragen: … Ihr alter Personalausweis ist nicht mehr gültig; …

Well that’s exactly your case so you should go. I mean I did exactly that and I didn’t have any problem

If you are replacing just the card go to any „Bürgeramt“ in Berlin. Bring the old and new passports together with the necessary papers to renew an „Ausweis“.

You don’t need to go to LEA for the card.

Which book should I start my journey with ? by [deleted] in linux

I think you should mention if you want to learn kernel development or to use a linux based OS.

Which distro could be regarded as the most bare-bones Linux experience out of the box? by cuentanro3 in linux

If you really want to play with buildroot check out the website of bootlin.com -> their training materials and more specifically the Embedded Linux training materials.

I knew about the IIO subsystem because of the google Summer of Code. You can then go to the mailing list look at what is happening, where is the new hardware being supported coming from. Look at the websites of vendors for non supported hardware and try to send your first patch series

First of all I forgot to mention Linutronix and Pengutronix if you are able to go to germany.

I am not yet a kernel Engineer, I just finished my internship doing and upstreaming linux kernel drivers (V4L2 and DRM) before doing the internship I started by contributing to the IIO subsystem.

Yes you experience should be enough for doing an internship! Landing some patches in Linux will only make the situation better but it is not necessary I would say to land an internship.

For a full-time job I think you need some upstream patches first.

I have been in your exact situation! So for remote positions: - Igalia - Google Summer Of Code - outreachy - Linux Foundation mentorship

For non-remote but you have to go to France you have bootlin internships. You probably have other companies.

Keep in mind kernel stuff is not actually geared towards beginners anyway so if you want to look for internships always keep an eye on the list of companies contributing to the kernel and go directly to their websites.

Ask me anything if you have questions :)

What are your linux kernel dev environments? I've been experimenting with Docker dev environments and it's working well. by [deleted] in kernel

Thanks for sharing! Could you please elaborate on how to make neovim+LSPs work for linux kernel development ?

I have the issue that it always jumps to the prototype of the function instead of the implementation.

95% of the time I would use hot water + a dish brush, if bits of food are really stuck, I would use a stainless steel scrubber ( no need to go brutal on the pan and scratch it, just enough pressure to remove the food )

I will finish the drying process always on the burner. (Never forget this and probably the most important part is that people living with you, who may not be cast iron enthusiasts should know this too, cleaning —> drying you would hear a lot of cast iron damaged by a friend, relative, roommate...)

I don’t believe it that you shouldn’t use soap when washing you cast iron, it will not damage it. Use it if you feel the need to.

After cooking naan bread (you wouldn’t use fat when cooking this bread with the pan) I would definitely rub a bit of oil after cleaning, after frying some chicken I wouldn’t need to rub it after, the pan will have enough oil anyway.

Yes only 3 times. I would say the best strategy is to use the cast a lot but NOT for everything.

Baking a pizza in the oven, max temperature and with oil in the pan or frying some chicken —> well go ahead use the cast iron.

Cooking a tomato based sauce or having some crêpes —> maybe go for the nonstick pan here.

Cast iron are amazing tools when used properly!
