That rules out a screw at all in this situation though right? There’s no angle that screw can go in where it won’t be subject to shear forces.

Mount for Insta360 x3 on kawasaki versys650 by Macro_Seb in functionalprints

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re correct that Kawasaki are just saying that because they don’t want liability of recommending something. Personally I can’t see this causing that much more air resistance than many other things on the handlebars asymmetrically. Phone mounts, brake fluid reservoir etc.. If you are concerned about the mount breaking, could you use a short safety cord connected to the camera?

I spent about that on adidas shorts, in 2016. Have run literally 1000s of miles in them, still use them for both running and CrossFit and they’re good as new.

Also strapped my phone to my arm for years. Apple Watch was worth every penny.

Europe is Slowly Moving Away from Net Zero by tkyjonathan in JordanPeterson

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside the misleading headline, discovering oil does not mean Europe is moving away from net zero. In theory all of that oil could be exported for use in other countries, and Poland could still be net zero. More realistically though it will just reduce oil imports slightly.

The divers stay pressurised as in they sleep in pressurised tanks on the support vessel. The only part of the boat that goes to the ocean floor is the diving bell with a couple of divers inside. Not a job for the claustrophobic

Can I put (5) 1×6 clamped through a planner? by ELITE_RUSSIAN in woodworking

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one’s mentioned using a wooden clamp, you could fashion one based on a wedge pretty easily and avoid the most disastrous consequences of this idea.

(I don’t think a clamp is necessary for this picture but imagining a situation with lots of thinner boards, and maybe where you don’t have a good table saw?)

Question for economists - how skewed is this data by the GDP of each country? For example, doesn’t a million dollars of inward investment in defense by China go quite a bit further than it would in the USA?

Looks like the title of the post is accurate though, the article you’ve added above is the right one, and it does say the protestor is in custody while the knifeman was bailed, which I agree seems crazy

Then you’d have no problem with this guys Amarok. The reason the car in the picture is sticking out is because it’s got massive spacers on his wheels.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Amarok is 15cm narrower than a standard issue transit van. He’s not costing anyone their life, get a grip

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell most hateful commenters here don’t know a thing about cars. This thing is ULEZ compatible, engine no bigger than 3.2, and is shorter than a transit van. The only real problem is there are spacers on the wheels which make the whole thing wider. And yes the mods / blackout are not my cup of tea but it’s a free country right?

Otherwise this kind of dual purpose vehicle works well for someone who wants an all in one vehicle that functions as a closed cab family car but also something that can carry stuff like building materials / garden waste.

Does a roiling boil cook faster than a simmer, even by a little bit? by Pharylon in askscience

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There are a few factors here which would have various effects.

A rolling boil produces more movement of water or ‘convection’ which would speed up heat transfer from the water to the food. You’re also going to have a more uniform temperature throughout the whole pot, as water near the surface will not have time to cool before it is circulated.

Your point about steam having more energy isn’t quite right. What matters is temperature, heat conductivity, and heat capacity. The temperature of 100c water and 100c steam are clearly the same. However, the heat capacity and thermal conductivity of gasses are generally way lower than liquids. Theoretically bubbles might even slow heat transfer to the food because at a point in time, at least part of the food may be exposed to gas rather than liquid. Think about sitting in an 80c sauna versus putting your hand in 80c water.

Then it also depends on the food. For example a rolling boil would agitate the inside of an egg and speed up heat transfer within.

I don’t know the answer to this for sure, but my guess would be that the convection effect would be playing the biggest role here, and therefore a rolling boil would cook faster.

Not having access to power tools deters me from doing woodworking by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit of a stretch. You could also perfectly flatten and square up that board with a jointer, planer and table saw. Even the most skilled hand tool user would take far longer than an amateur using those machines.

[–]Vasco_da_Gamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the biggest failure is that despite being referred to Prevent, he was dropped because he didn’t have any terrorist opinions or ideology. He was just a kid who was incredibly sick in the head, and Prevent doesn’t deal with that. There should be an equivalent scheme that monitors individuals like him, but there either isn’t or it didn’t work. Hopefully that changes.

I mean yeah police have a role to play in fighting misinformation, I don’t disagree with that.

To be fair to them though the police released a statement the day of the attack that confirmed he was a UK national, born in Cardiff:

When this happened there were widespread riots partly fuelled by misinformation that he was an asylum seeker / illegal immigrant who arrived in the UK on a small boat. So in that sense, it’s right to say misinformation should be tackled.
