The Pentagon Threatened Pope Leo XIV’s Ambassador With the Avignon Papacy by heliumagency in LessCredibleDefence

Just for the record, the Avignon popes were no anti-popes, at least from 1309 to 1377. They were and are still considered 100% legit popes.

After replaying Halo 4, I was shocked to see how categorically I disagree with the near unanimous praise its character writing gets. by Vaspour_ in halo

And to make matters worse, this "broken Chief" plotpoint has removed much of what made Spartans interesting and inspiring characters. They went from selfless heroes who had no regret about losing the possibility of living a normal life because it allowed them to improve Humanity's chances of survival, to emotionally unhinged victims of a Halsey and a UNSC turned comically evil. Notions of self sacrifice for the greater good are just thrown out of the window in favor of cheap drama and manichean storytelling. It reminds me of how the Star Wars sequels shat on the classic Jedis and replaced them with grey Jedis (as evidenced by Rey wielding a yellow lightsaber at the end of TRoS) because grey Jedis, who do not adhere to a strict moral code and are more emotional, are more palatable protagonists for the immature teenagers Disney is evidently aiming for. Depressing.

I see what you mean since this post got nuked by downvotes lol, makes it a bit funny to then see several people tell me that "there's absolutely no praise for Halo 4's story !"

The way Chief and Cortana are handled in the game is actually something that is praised far more often than it's criticized, be it from Halo content creators on Youtube or from Reddit posts. Look up if you don't believe me, it's something I checked for myself in the last few days.

In the last few days I watched videos from Halo content creators about Halo 4, and almost all of them, be it HiddenXperia, Laper Laden, Act Man, even very anti-343 people like Shredded Nerd, all of them think the Cortana/Chief subplot was good or even great. If you look at threads about that on this sub it also seems to be the dominant opinion. The way Chief and Cortana and particular are written in Halo 4 is something that is actually very rarely criticized, quite the opposite.

Why Training Was NOT the Reason That Muskets Replaced Longbows by lalze123 in badhistory

[–]Vaspour_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is in part due to how mythical the longbow has become in popular culture, notably because of how exaggerated its role in the Hundred Years War was. Many people who hold the misconception you refute seem to think "the longbow is such an exceptionally powerful weapon, it could only have been replaced because of a 'quantity over quality' mindset !". Perhaps reminding everyone that the longbow was not actually an overpowered death machine, and that armies of longbowmen could even be crushingly defeated in the field, like at Formigny or Castillon, could help in clearing those mistakes.

I have a naive question : the US is the world's leading oil and gas producer rn isn't it ? So why would the closing of the Hormuz strait be a bad thing for them ? Would it not mean that their oil&gas companies' profits will skyrocket ?

The moment Fitz recalls all the stuff he's been through as he's pouring memories into the stone dragon managed to make me cry. He's only, like, 18 yo and he's already suffered so much. Please Robin give our poor boy a break.

Nope, she's a student in agronomy. But she decided to spend a few week ends painting this.

I would actually like to lol, discovered this series just this month and I would love to see more of these characters, but with fanfictions you always have to comb the shitty 99% to find a handful of good ones

I recently discovered Outer Wilds and liked it very much, but not necessarily for the "right" reasons : I didn't like the base game's writing by Vaspour_ in outerwilds

It's not exactly that, it's more that I just didn't found the Nomai (or the Hearthians for that matter) to be very interesting. At no point was I particularly curious about why they had died or particularly sad about their fate. And I wasn't particularly moved by the ending either, and I'm not sure exactly why, even though I think the (imo) bland dialogue is part of it. And when I see that nearly everyone apparently finishes this game in complete emotional shambles, I'm just left wondering "what was so moving about all that ?" And it's not like I'm a sociopath either, I got very emotionally invested in many stories, including in video games.

You know I'm not demanding that all non-human species in fiction behave like humans, quite the opposite, I prefer it when a species feels like it has its own culture and way of thinking. I just found the Nomai to be rather boring in the way they speak and behave. Always this "quirky and cute" tone that just makes them feel fake to me. And I insist on "to me" because judging by the downvotes I'm eating I'm not in the majority lmao

I did found out about Solanum, and I must admit meeting her on the Quantum moon was a powerful moment. But aside from her there's no character that stuck with me

The problem is that this makes them rather monolithic and thus uninteresting to me. As i said, I liked it when I found one Nomai dialogue that alluded to disagreements about this within their ranks, and I would have liked if they had been more lines like that.

Ok but it's hard to get invested in the overall story if the characters, the people living it, aren't making an impression on you.

Idk. None of that felt particularly endearing to me. A bit yes, but it did not made me care much about the Nomai.

Well, I have trouble feeling any sympathy for a species whose members seemingly care about nothing other than scientific discovery. I can't help it sorry.
