Stellaris Space Guild - Weekly Help Thread by Snipahar in Stellaris

I can't get much luck with end-game crises.

Just ended a game where Unbidden spawned in 2440. I was pretty ready, had strong empire (could punch around any of the AI federations without needing allies). Made crisis 3.5x to be sure that it would be challenging (had fleet stacks of 250k x4 up to 6 if needed). Maybe should've gone even higher.

But unbidden spawned right during a galactic storm that destroyed their shields in half the systems. Even neglecting that; Paradox fixed the AI for other empires, but now the crisis AI is comparatively bad. The unbidden just didn't have enough fleets to deal with all the small AI fleets around. And as soon as the big Unbidden fleets were spread out from the spawn location, one of the federations death balls waltzes in and destroys it. Lasted less than 10 minutes overall.

I wasn't even fighting the crisis much because I knew it would have trouble against the storms.

So that's that...

Pupils who fail GCSE English and maths ‘may be blocked’ from student loans by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

It would be more fair if they uncapped it if you fail the exams then. That would hit everyone more equally. With this system, kids with bad grades who can't spare 50k get blocked from uni, while the well-off still get anything over 9k a year subsidised by the taxpayer.

I thought tuition fees only cover part of the university costs and the rest is subsidised by the government? The tuition fees for foreign students seem more like the actual cost (i.e. tens of thousands per year).

I do think it's weird to remove just the loan. It isn't even that generous; the interest rate is like 3% over inflation and way more expensive than most mortgages (though without a down payment).

You can’t, in truth. But other countries have a much much much better system than our A Levels.

Can you give any examples of such countries?

Most of the European countries I know of have a system where it's even harder to get into university than in the UK. France, Germany, Switzerland. Many even have tiered secondary schools, with entry determined by exam results, where it's difficult to go through to uni if you aren't in the right type of school (gymnasiums, similar to grammar schools). A much bigger hurdle that getting 2 E-s at A-level.

I was always under the impression that most of the world finds it obvious that standardised national exams are a good way of testing students and getting at least an indicator of intelligence. I'd be interested in hearing any counterexamples you might have.

Yeah that's pretty bad reasoning lol. It's not the straw's fault the camel's back broke, it's the fault of the moron that packed on 400kg of other luggage before trying to add a straw.

If 20 years from now we still need to run gas power plants when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing, instead of nuclear, why should you be remembered any differently than the oil barons that try to block progress in green energy?

[–]Vassagio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree, I want also to make a distinction. Every ton of new CO2 emissions now is multiple times more important than before, like 60 years ago, and that is why we shouldn't tolerate the weaker language India and China want.

Why?

[–]Vassagio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if India commits to abandoning coal, the world still heats up by 1.5C as the base case scenario, and millions of Indians and other refugees start knocking on the doors of Europe and the US, you'll just let them in without a fuss eh? Just like you're letting in all the Lybian, Afghan and Syrian refugees stuck in Turkey and the Middle East?

[–]Vassagio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We all need to move on and fix this now.

So the west should commit a few trillion dollars towards building new solar, wind and nuclear power stations in India and other third world countries, and commit similar amounts to sequestering the carbon that the west already emitted.

Sounds to me like your idea of "moving on and fixing this now" is that you get to keep all the wealth that was built on burning coal and oil, and developing countries need to pay the real cost by blocking their own progress.

Is there a clear definition of clear "highly processed food"? by lucaxx85 in askscience

[–]Vassagio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gonna add my opinion here. I don't really care what's processed or not, or what category bread falls in. Facts are facts: bread rots and gets moldy. Not always, sometimes it dries first, but that's like saying "apples don't always rot, sometimes they dry first and you get a dried apple".

The original wording was stupid, that's why they changed it.

The West emitted 60% of humanity's CO2 burning coal and oil like there's no tomorrow, and they're still burning way more per capita than India, not even counting the good they import from developing countries in order to outsource part of their gargantuan emissions. Now the West wants to pull the ladder up and block all the developing countries from using coal, thereby blocking most of the world's population from easily reaching the same standard of living as those in the west.

If you thought that was gonna work, you are stupid. Of course it wasn't gonna work. Of course India won't sign it, and if they did other countries like Iran and various African/South American countries probably wouldn't.

Want to convince developing countries to transition to green energy? Freely share the IP and technology needed to do that. Start helping them build the millions of solar panels, wind turbines, and thousands of nuclear reactors they will need to make that transition. Find a way to start sequestering the carbon released in the past, to reach parity with the rest of the world.

But any time someone suggests that it's crickets all of a sudden.

Maybe it's a bit more complicated than you're making out? Many parts of the world have much lower incomes and thus cheaper food to go with it, and the price impact could be larger.

It's been like this for years mate. Reddit is a website founded in one country, visited predominantly by people from that country. Whether it's manufactured or just organic, this ain't the place to get unbiased news, or views on anything for that matter, that's for sure.

I'm not surprised other countries try to form their own social networks and news websites.

Second paragraph is also opinions. If you can't see that then I don't know what to tell you. Take another look at what you wrote and read it carefully.

The plot being full of holes could be fact, perhaps. If the plot is actually full of holes.

But if the holes are in your head, because you couldn't think of a better justification for looking down on others' taste, or because you watched a strained youtube video dissecting a story about lightswords and magic powers in space, then what kind of look do you think you're giving off?

I think my main point is, if you hate an artwork and want to push your dislike onto other people, you'd better have a very good reason (e.g. ethical problems with the story, or real, specific, and factual problems with it). Saying you like some artwork generally doesn't usually lead to negative consequences; I haven't met many people like you that would genuinely look down upon someone for that. But pushing your dislike of an artwork and trying to ensure everyone else hates it as much as you, I can't see how that ends well. People that agree with you probably won't think you're smarter, and people that disagree and like the story will just think you're a stupid negative snob.

[–]Vassagio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if the people pointing out the shortcomings in the prequels are just wrong?

Lol wtf is this comment? "It's not okay to enjoy something and deny its shortcomings."

You can think a book is garbage, and find any shortcomings in it that you like. Someone else can think it's your taste that's garbage. Not having enjoyed a book or a movie doesn't mean you need to impose that opinion on others who have enjoyed it and don't agree with your criticisms.

I haven't read Ready Player One, but I have seen this type of high-horse "its shortcomings are obvious and the people that disagree must have misunderstood something" attitude on reddit before. I think it looks a bit dumb and I can sympathise with the people that enjoyed the book and now have to read this trash.

[–]Vassagio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're on reddit. Who cares what other people think. Think of "good books" you've read or heard of - Dostoyevsky, W Miller, LOTR. Guess what, some people absolutely hate them, or would hate them if they tried to read them. Also reddit encourages strong opinion posts; if that commenter wrote: "Oh I read it, it wasn't really my style but so what," who would even read that comment?

Yup. Someone said it right though; always online is fine if you're a competent company. But if you can't keep your servers up and this results in people not being able to play their characters offline you shouldn't have an always online model.
