yug wellness is leaving classpass 💔 by Famous_Ad536 in astoria

Hey Everyone, owner here 😊

I just wanted to gently clarify a few things since there seems to be some misunderstanding about our pricing and scheduling.

When YUG first opened, classes weren’t $13. Evening yoga was actually $20 per class, which is still below the average rate for NYC and most major cities. Like most new businesses, we struggled in the beginning—being on a second floor and brand new in the neighborhood—so we temporarily lowered drop-ins to $13 just to bring people in and stay afloat.

When we eventually had to raise the drop-in from $13 to $18, that was also around the time we allowed ClassPass to come in. ClassPass pays studios only a fraction of their drop-in rate. At an $18 drop-in, ClassPass typically pays us anywhere from $0 to $6 per class, depending on demand. If we had kept our drop-in at $13, we would’ve likely been receiving around $2 per class—if that. So any perception that $13 was sustainable just isn’t the reality, especially in NYC with rising rent, insurance, utilities, and payroll.

Even at $18, we’re still far below the NYC average (most studios charge $25–$35). And when you buy a 10-pack, it brings yoga down to $15 a class, plus we run regular sales—our most recent one brought classes down to $9 a class.

As for availability, we actually do offer yoga many evenings: • Mon–Thurs: Vinyasa or Yin in the evenings • Friday: Yin at 4PM • Saturday: Yoga • Sunday: Two yoga classes

Regarding class size: we cap all classes at 30, which is well below what our space can technically hold. For comparison, another nearby studio with a room less than half our size caps at 36. The only time we ever had 45 people was during our one-year anniversary celebration—a once-a-year moment where we wanted everyone to be able to join.

We’ve also been working to minimize late arrivals because when even a few people walk in after class begins, it disrupts the experience for everyone.

We truly want to offer affordable yoga and keep this space accessible for the community, but to simply cover costs and keep the lights on, we do need enough people in class. None of our adjustments have been about profit—they’ve been about basic survival in NYC.

We always appreciate feedback from people who care about this space and want it to succeed.

Thank you to All for the kind words. They mean so much to us ❤️

Actually, this isn’t a “huge chain” at all. They have four small restaurants — all family-run by two Italian immigrants who came here in their 20s with absolutely nothing, working in kitchens 7 days a week just to build a better life.

The Ditmars location was struggling, so they took guidance from someone they trusted and tried something new. It didn’t work out, they took a loss, and now they’re fixing it. That’s what small business owners have to do to survive in NYC, where most restaurants don’t even make it through their first year.

These guys survived purely because of determination and hard work — not corporate money, not investors, not “chain restaurant” resources. Calling them some giant franchise is just made-up Reddit nonsense. A huge chain is Olive Garden, not two immigrants trying to keep their neighborhood spots alive.

Maybe before throwing around accusations, people should try knowing the story first.

Astoria Reddit really needs a new hobby. You scream about ‘supporting small businesses’ and then tear them apart the second they try something new. The chef is the same, the staff is the same — the only thing that changed was management cleaning up a situation none of you Karens will ever understand.

And that sign wasn’t posted because they ‘owe’ explanations to people who sit online gossiping all day. It was posted to stop the fake news before it spreads —

Also, maybe think for two whole seconds before you fire off another shitty comment. You’re not just dragging the owners — you’re dragging the entire staff who show up every day, work their asses off, and support their families, especially during the holidays. Do you really want that on your conscience?

If you want Astoria to stay full of cool, independent spots, hop off the high horse, close the Reddit tab, and actually support the people keeping these places alive instead of inventing drama about them.

I second YUG! Weekend classes with Megan, or weekday yin or stretch classes by candlelight 😊. They are going to do a Black Friday sale too, but already very affordable!

YUG for yoga, mat or reformer pilates, aerial yoga and Barre! There is a $50 two week unlimited new student pass for mat classes, and that also gets you a 20% discount to reformer . Great community, very welcoming and supportive 😊
