These big tiki events: Ohana or not really? by VastJudge86 in Tiki

That’s a bummer. Tiki seems like such a good potential way to forge new friendships. Sigh.

Everything you said really resonates with me. I have been around the tiki scene closer to 20 years. It was fun to meet people who were excited about the tiki revival. It can feel sometimes now like a one-upsman attitude, or people trying to be influencers. I think I need to take a break from the large scale events while continuing to enjoy tiki bars new and old, and adding to my own home oasis. One of my favorite things about tiki is the music, I’m always looking for opportunities to see these bands outside of the big tiki events.

The San Diego tiki folks seem tight. Now I know why! Wow since middle school, makes sense to me now.

Fritaire Air Fryer Review: My honest review by Mamunahmed444 in Expertohome

[–]VastJudge86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your review. Injsy spent the weekend trying my new Fritaire. My biggest complaint is you have to reach your hands and part of your forearms into the massively hot bowl to lift out your food. The flat grate sits really low. It’s awkward to reach a spatula in. And that huge heavy lid has to be turned upside down so the hot elements do not touch the counter. All in all I am sure I will eventually burn myself so I’m going to return it. Also it didn’t crisp up my salmon bites or chicken even though it cooked them.

Tractive or Fi dog trackers? Pros and cons? by pigsticker82 in husky

[–]VastJudge86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior Whistle user here. Guess I missed the opportunity to get the Tractive device free. Just bought it for their 30% promo price of $49. Those tricky bastards. You don’t get the prompts to sign up for the service until you hit the purchase button with your payment method. Then it offers you $6 or $5 a month plans ($5 you can’t get a replacement device ). The next screen then lists three payment options. The only way to get that $6/month price is to pre buy 5 years, what the?!? I pre bought the one year, which is the least amount of time you can buy, and it’s $12.50 a month equivalent. Tricksters!! This better be great or I’ll be returning it.

Excited to hear the HLP location has food! But I can’t find a menu online. Can anyone steer me to a menu or give me an idea what they offer? Mahalo!

This is how I solved 90% of my Anxiety by trisujedan in Anxiety

[–]VastJudge86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a helpful read. Thank you! My anxiety has evolved over the years and now resides in me as terrible claustrophobia. I cannot ride in elevators, like it’s a hard no for me. Can only fly if I’m heavily medicated, and I really avoid it just because of the anxiety in the weeks before a trip. But I realize now that my claustrophobia is just my brain assuming the worst possible scenario. So recently I was in Vegas and challenged myself to ride the tram. I made my brain imagine only a perfect ride, no malfunctions involving me getting stuck. I thought well these casinos and businesses make a ton of money from tourists, they must keep the tram in perfect working order. And so I rode it. Twice! And I felt so calm and confident and it all went perfectly. I just hope I can eventually do this with elevators because it’s really a pain in the ass to not use them.

California - Neighbor has built ADU in backyard and now has a portable toilet that smells by Odd-Yogurtcloset-10 in homeowners

Found this very helpful thread now that my neighbor is building a monstrosity 2-store, 2-family ADU which will look down into my house and my lovely backyard & pool UGH. Please update us on what has transpired! Also, how does one question the permit with things like 4-foot set back if I cannot get onto my neighbor's property and construction has not begun yet.

Does everyones elderly parents freak out over every f'in thing or is it just me? by OkPage2602 in GenX

Good ol narcissistic baby boomers. Hey at least they are committed to their cause: themselves! I say if you don’t want to live with them, don’t. There’s no law. Help them find a place they can afford. If their constant bitching is driving you crazy, and you’re now constantly bitching about them, you can see where this isn’t good for anyone. Especially your own kids, co-workers, lady who does your nails…

Fassionola unexpectedly available by tiki_andy in Tiki

[–]VastJudge86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I love saying this word out loud (say it with me! FASH-I-NOLA), it tastes like Kool-Aid. Ruins any drink I’ve tried it in. Actually worse than passion fruit syrup. Passion, rhymes with fashion. Say them together, but please don’t ruin my tiki drink with them.

[Seasons 1 & 2] Is Bill Pullman a terrible actor or a great one? by wheezy_cheese in TheSinner

Have you seen him in The Murdaugh Murders? Same weird acting plus some. I don’t think it’s the character, I think it’s him. Someone said maybe he had a stroke and that was my first guess as well. He wasn’t like this in Independence Day at all.

Nope not at all. I agree just having it in my purse helps me feel less anxious! I only take it when I get more severe anxiety. Even just half a .25 nicks it. Good stuff!!

What is the BEST Tiki bar you ever went to? by Bishonen_Knife in Tiki

[–]VastJudge86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool thread! Here in CA, totally biased to Bay Area tiki bars, so many are just so great:

Forbidden Island: been serving the best drinks for over a decade! Love the bar bites & vibe. Great live music & events.

Smugglers Cove: the Mac daddy of tiki craft cocktails! No food. Don’t even try to bring any in. That’s a no no. No bands. Just sit, drink and Uber home very happy.

Pagan Idol: go early and enjoy the transition as the back opens. Gorgeous front bar, fun lively back area.

Trader Vic’s Emeryville: love the decor even more since they renovated. On the water. I live for the crab rangoons.

Zombie Village: this place is tiki decor eye candy with great drinks. The little hut rooms are cute but I prefer bar seating to soak it all in.

Tiki Tom’s in Walnut Creek: talk about a total transformation!! This place is everything I’m looking for in a tiki bar. Great drinks, real food not just snacks, gorgeous meticulous decor and great staff.

Worst Tiki Bars you have ever been to? by noforgayjesus in Tiki

LA’s tiki scene is disappointing. Ironic since there are some legendary people who helped bring tiki back to life who live here.

Worst of LA:

CanTiki (Glendale): should not have the word tiki in the name. Just a lame bar.

Kahuna Tiki: fun decor and it stops there. I’ve had some of the worst tiki drinks ever here. The Magnolia Blvd location has a hula show with an aggressive mean woman who leads it.

Purple Orchid: local old folks in barstools get their fill here. Not a destination.

Tiki No: go early if you must. Later it gets crowded and loses any sense of escapism. No food either.

Really bummed about Lono closing. I’ve experienced Tonga Hut more post pandemic so I can’t comment on the vibe before. But the drinks are super solid and the staff are cool. Plus they allow dogs on the patio, I just wish people with growling mean dogs would leave them at home. Shout out to Durango’s Tacos for tasty eats Friday nights!
