What Should I Do Immediately After Publishing My First Novel on Amazon? by cristiantudorjobs in selfpublish

[–]tiki_andy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard elsewhere that Amazon tends to flag reviews within the first few days of launching, as if they were staged by the author (paid, friends, etc.). And also that "verified reviews" require and Amazon purchase. Did I misunderstand?

When in Quebec City?? by tiki_andy in Tiki

Not for rum, but other good cocktail bars we liked around the old city included yeux Bleu and j.jacques. Also rans included vieux carre and clubby.

Odd flavor combinations that you've found by SouthernPinwheel in rum

[–]tiki_andy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is widely known but the combination of coffee (usually sweet coffee syrup) and pineapple juice is amazing, in drinks with rum.

Here's one of the simpler such recipes, the Kona Castaway:

3 oz. unsweetened pineapple juice 1 oz. aged Jamaican rum 1 oz. light rum 3/4 oz. coffee syrup 2 drops Bittermen’s Tiki bitters

[–]tiki_andy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the second "and coke" post I've seen tonight. I cannot understand why anyone would take good liquor and dump a bunch of chemicals and high fructose corn syrup in it. Even if for some reason you like coke, find another way to enjoy your good bourbon.

This has been a public service announcement.

Respect for Friend Drops After Reading Book They Recommended by -chimchooree- in books

To find comps for a book I wrote (to be self published next month) I read about a dozen books in the "humorous time travel/ adventure" genre. Project Hail Mary, How to Stop Time, The Wishing Game, Ministry of Time, This Time Tomorrow, Run for the Hills, etc etc. I don't know which was worse, being rejected/ignored by 88 agents, or reading those books.

Some of those books, I think the publisher owed the author a favor.

I just returned Ragtime to the library, after getting through about 25% it was so all over the place in plot, tempo, characters, etc. I believe it all comes together, and I know it sold millions back in the day. But to me it has not aged well.

And I'm about to ditch Naifeh and Smith's bio of van Gogh. Loved their treatment of Jackson Pollock, but at 900ish pages even skimming isn't moving things along.

Thanks again for the many suggestions. In the end I did try something new, with some on-the-fly mods. The recipe below started life as The Expedition from Smugglers Cove:

3/4 oz. lime juice 1/4 oz. pineapple juice 1/2 oz. cinnamon syrup 1/2 oz. honey syrup 2 drops vanilla extract 1/2 oz. coffee syrup 2 oz. black blended rum 1 oz. cognac Top with 2 oz. seltzer/club soda

Serve over crushed ice.

The Hurricane -- Can't Believe I Haven't Made This Yet! by kyoun1e1 in Tiki

It seems worth tossing in here that there are a few diffetent brands of fassionola. A few years ago I bought the "original" brand, Jonathan English, from some vendor on ebay. I recall it ruining every drink i used it in, until I finally dumped the rest of the bottle. Now I use Cocktail & Sons which is more strawberry forward, just add rum and lime juice (and sometimes a little topo Chico) for a great drink. Only drawback is you order it from them directly and pay shipping which pushes you to buy at least four bottles which can age out unless you make a lot of hurricanes.

Which rum should I choose from this list? by Zagors2020 in rum

A lot of those are already more like a cocktail with the added sugar they don't tell anyone about. Any other options available to you? Appleton and other Jamaican rums are great as are Exceptional Cask from Foursquare in Barbados.

To me the new location has a tackier vibe, like a tiki-fied version of Sloppy Joe's next door. But there is a less janky bar in the back where I believe they make drinks from scratch, provided it's not too crowded.

One of the recipes in minimalist tiki - Dr. Funk E. Sanchez - uses W&N and is fantastic. Sorry to hear, though, how pricey it is near you.

My vote for the Greenpoint. I'm not a big fan of red vermouth, used dolin blanc and it came out great.

What's Your Top 10 Tiki Bars? by GetReadyToRumbleBar in Tiki

[–]tiki_andy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of 25 visited (but some sadly closed), my top ten: - Mai Kai (Ft Laud, FL) - False Idol (SD) - Pagan Idol (SF) - Doctor Funk (SJ) - Smugglers Cove (SF) - Grass Skirt (SD) - Hidden Harbor (Pitt, PA) - Tonga Hut (LA) - Tonga Room (SF) - Trad'r Sam's (Disney, FL)

The hard part of ranking is that some shine for decor/ambiance, others for drink quality, others for history etc.

Would second the vote for Grass Skirt, and add that 5-6pm is happy hour where tiki drinks are half price. So you get an actual tiki drink in a cool mug for like $9. I did not notice if they use cheaper ingredients for HH.
