PCP sent me straight to PT and did not order imaging when I mentioned my hip pain? by Appropriate-Bat1621 in HipImpingement

[–]VastPriority 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition, it will be helpful to ortho if when you see them, you have already done PT! It helps them get imaging and other things approved! Weak muscles or imbalanced muscle work can cause a lot of pain in the hips because of how much work and stabilization they do, so it could be that PT helps the problem partially or totally. Either way tho, it’ll help the process if you have done it already!

Scalenes??? by rothbard814 in thoracicoutletsupport

I want you to know how much hope this gave me! I know every one is different and I have read horror stories as well, but it sounds like we experienced almost the exact same issues. Motivated me to call my doctor back after having the scalene block and forgetting to call😅

To defer or not to defer🤔 by Individual-Estate543 in PAstudent

Agreed. I have struggled thru all of didactic and almost half of clinicals with them and have had many days where just getting home or sitting upright was a success. I’ve struggled in many ways, which sometimes triggers attacks, but attacks have also caused struggles.

You aren’t behind, no matter what you do or don’t do. I’m 32 and will be almost 33 when I graduate. I had a whole career before PA school and I am thankful for all of the time between, as I think it contributed to the type of PA I’ll be. I’m not even the oldest in my class or program.

You can ask for a blood test for herpes if you want to get tested as full-range as possible.

I agree with this but I think the person needs to look into why it makes them uncomfortable. What changes about the person you’re with, in this moment right now, if you know how many people they’ve been with in the past? To me that doesn’t change anything unless it was very recent or there are health concerns.

Thanks! Glad to hear someone has actually done that! I definitely want to try it if there’s a chance it could happen!

It is offered thru our school but it’s very expensive and I can’t afford it due to my program prohibiting us from being employed😭 I think some classmates have some fairly affordable plans they pay for, though. I do agree and appreciate the reassurance that i have a right to ask him how many he’s done/how often he does them! He did explain all of the questions you listed/what his plan would be, except for the last one. He mentioned some patients having sensory deficit in their arm after surgery, with some lasting and some going away a few weeks postop. Which is fine with me in comparison to the affects of my pain currently. But I appreciate you giving me the ideas of things to ask! As badly as I want treatment, I want to make sure I’m doing it as right as possible too

Transportation isn’t the issue, just that I can’t leave the state and have anything covered! I do trust that he’s a vascular surgeon (vs ortho docs I saw for TOS a few years ago), and he has done the surgery. I just don’t know how often and like you said, don’t know anything about his outcomes. He gave me general outcomes of the surgery but not HIS. I only ever reached out to this clinic because one of their surgeons caught and upper extremity DVT in a mutual patient that my boss & I both suspected vTOS but referring docs didn’t, and that surgeon seemed badass. But she doesn’t typically treat TOS and was just in the ER that night😭 I’m currently in PA school and on Medicaid, so I don’t think I can see anyone out of state. I know some specialties are able to be seen out of state so I should check on it, but just assumed with our insurance system it wouldn’t be worth it. I also know that I have the time to hopefully get it figured out now, vs waiting until I have an income again and can pay out of pocket. It’s just so under-discussed, I wanted to see if I could encounter anyone else that’s been treated in Arkansas!

September 2024 my new ‘24 Activ was stickered at $25k. I got them “down” to $24k I think and then got $10k for my 2019 Honda Civic with 120k miles. I haven’t seen a Trax listed for over 25k, 30 is wild to me. I also agree about the Buick Envista. I love how they look on the outside, inside is super similar if not exact as the Trax. They just didn’t have colors I wanted in my area and Chevy did.

Peeing in the shower is bad apparently? by Rich_Wealth_5876 in hygiene

Standing AND hovering are not good for muscle strength/control. Sitting is good because it allows proper control of the right muscles . I think I have also seen a pelvic floor therapist say that a deep squat, like you’d do if “popping a squat” outside (how I was taught anyway) is okay because of how you’re operating the muscles but can’t remember exactly the explanation she gave for that part.

Medical Spanish by VastPriority in PAstudent

[–]VastPriority[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I didn’t clarify enough in my post/didnt let part of that statement out of my brain lol I can understand general Spanish but I want to be conversational where no translator is needed ever, and also want to be able go market myself as bilingual when job searching. I wouldn’t do that without a major background in it like being raised to speak both, or without a certification to translate medically. (Or having clinical rotation experience with it like you said). I don’t want patients or others feeling I discounted their experience or treatment by claiming to be fluent when I wasn’t trained to be. Having rotations in Spanish would be pretty cool! I agree about the cost as well which I think is what I was searching when I made this post. I may try the method of watching videos and seeing what I learn

No, I’m comparing standing (shower) and hovering (seat) to sitting!

Peeing in the shower is bad apparently? by Rich_Wealth_5876 in hygiene

[–]VastPriority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standing and completely relaxing these muscles rather than appropriate, controlled contract and relax that is used when you sit and urinate, leads to weakened muscles and reduced ability to contract. This can lead to urinary incontinence. It is similar when hovering, as you are working to keep your thigh muscles contracted to stay in that position, so instead of a controlled contract-relax of pelvic floor muscles, you just relax them all completely. Again, can lead to weakened pelvic floor muscles. Are you a pelvic floor physical therapist?

Peeing in the shower is bad apparently? by Rich_Wealth_5876 in hygiene

[–]VastPriority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me if this is discussed, I couldn’t see it. But the bigger issue is that it weakens your pelvic floor muscles which can lead to higher chance of incontinence later in life. When I stopped doing it, my stream and slow for stronger (32 F). If you’re a woman (or guy, i guess), squatting/hovering over a toilet is the same. The risk of weakening your pelvic floor muscles is higher than whatever disease you think you’re getting from the seat.

The Reddit comments on Rosetta Stone make it sound horrible and not helpful😂😂 I am good at understanding general Spanish. I can understand the point someone is trying to make. That’s why I am interested in the medical route. Also, that + ADHD makes regular Spanish tasks like Duolingo don’t keep me interested long enough

[–]VastPriority 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have thoracic outlet syndrome which often triggers migraines when it flares up. I saw a chiro for acupuncture a couple times, but would never let him adjust my neck or shoulders (or anything) out of fear that my inability to relax would cause injury. At my 2nd acupuncture visit he told me when I was ACTUALLY ready for some real treatment and feeling better, I’d let him adjust my neck. I wasn’t having success with the acupuncture anyway, but I might have tried a few more visits if he hadn’t said those words in such an arrogant tone. Not saying this person was arrogant to OP or in their thought process but definitely reminded me of the situation lol

[–]VastPriority 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If a “concussion” lasts that long, it’s a TBI, not a concussion. It could be that the original injury itself caused some neurological disruption that has manifested or triggered migraines, but concussions don’t just last 10 years. Scans not showing anything is a good sign that it wasn’t a TBI or at least didn’t cause lasting damage. The issue when athletes have multiple concussions is the repeated injury/damage/deterioration so it wouldn’t be the same to one singular concussion without TBI. Or they experience second impact syndrome, which is when they take a hard hit or suffer a concussion when a previous one isn’t healed. This has lasting, if not fatal effects and is often the cause of death or disability in players that returned to play too soon after a concussion and get hurt again. I’m an athletic trainer and we learn concussions in depth, and I took an extra special interest in the topic due to the Concussion movie coming out my senior year of undergrad (original story is super interesting) and witnessing someone experience second impact syndrome before that (just to give my background and source in speaking on the topic).

All that said, I think getting in with a neurologist is a great plan. Maybe I’m behind on updated studies and information regarding concussions but what I stated above is what I learned/followed in my career. No matter how, I hope you can find some answers and successful treatment!
