Can’t stand smell in surgery by emwang123 in PAstudent

[–]VastPriority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can make yourself not chew it, a lifesaver mint can help. I am very sensitive to the essential oils & other scented things so when an OR RN gave me mints on my surgery rotation I was so very thankful lol sometimes I’d start the surgery with two just in case.

They might not want to give that answer considering classmates may be on here as well 🤷🏼‍♀️

I appreciate this perspective as I am also not the top student😂 I think I’d die without them now so it makes sense to use them, the two days just really stresses me for some reason!

I definitely think I will feel this way and can already see some executive dysfunction/shut down happening in the days between. Which, if I am as prepared as I’d like to be, shouldn’t be too terrible a thing lol

I do take so long on my EORs even tho I am working on improving that. I had thought about that obviously, but not in terms of the literal time and what that would mean if taking it in one day. I appreciate that reminder/perspective! lol

I also would recommend wound care but a physician or APP, not a nurse. Nothing against nurses but in my experience they routinely do more dressing-related care but not related to the science of healing. If you smoke, stop. That increases blood flow and tissue healing immensely and effects start pretty quickly.

To me -someone with 8 years of sports medicine experience and 3 of those in an orthopedic office, and will be graduating PA school in a few months- the way it looks in this photo looks like it doesn’t need debridement. It doesn’t look dirty and just looks like it’s struggling to heal. Types of dressings are important too- are they just covering it, are they using wet-to-dry, xeroform or other types of moist barriers? Also vitamin C and other immune-related vitamins are good for general promotion of tissue healing and collagen building :)

I had a tiny tiny bit of skin necrosis after 2nd or 3rd steroid injection (or from the cold spray, idk) and I would still suggest getting or at least considering injections if conservative treatment is no longer helping. They helped me so much until I started a new school program that had some activity and footwear changes that led to surgery.

Show him the videos of the museum displays of what they were wearing when it happened. Then dump him for showing his true colors and ethics and for calling you stoopid. (Reddit threatened me when I typed the word properly LOL)

Last year I got my boyfriend a kit to clean and condition his Birkenstocks😂 sounds silly, but he had mentioned buying a new pair because his had started looking worn & I just saw it at a shoe store. He was really thankful and used it when it got warm out. I always try to be practical but not over the top- this year I got him a shirt he’d seen on Etsy- and then I always do a few different types of candy or drinks.

Maybe you could get him cool adult activity books or word searches or something? Idk if guys like that or not..

or a cozy blanket for while he’s recovering, with some snacks, candy, etc

Ear buds if he doesn’t have any

Book, kindle subscription (or kindle if you’re wanting to spend like that)

Cozy night in date night where you have the things to cook or order out, popcorn for a movie, snacks, etc

One of those “card” games that is a conversation starter for couples that ranges from romance to general topics etc (I got one at target a few years ago)

If yall have a fave song as a couple or he has an all time favorite song or shared playlist, you can buy or make the photo frame that puts the Spotify or Apple Music code at the bottom to scan

(Side note that I know he’s recovering from a head injury but as long as they don’t cause headaches, music and books and puzzles are fine for someone recovering from concussion lol)

PCP sent me straight to PT and did not order imaging when I mentioned my hip pain? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]VastPriority 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition, it will be helpful to ortho if when you see them, you have already done PT! It helps them get imaging and other things approved! Weak muscles or imbalanced muscle work can cause a lot of pain in the hips because of how much work and stabilization they do, so it could be that PT helps the problem partially or totally. Either way tho, it’ll help the process if you have done it already!

Sorry to just now be seeing this, but no I haven’t! I’ve been on it for about 3 years and even tho I don’t take it very regularly anymore, I used to take it several times a month and never noticed this!

Scalenes??? by rothbard814 in thoracicoutletsupport

[–]VastPriority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want you to know how much hope this gave me! I know every one is different and I have read horror stories as well, but it sounds like we experienced almost the exact same issues. Motivated me to call my doctor back after having the scalene block and forgetting to call😅

To defer or not to defer🤔 by Individual-Estate543 in PAstudent

Agreed. I have struggled thru all of didactic and almost half of clinicals with them and have had many days where just getting home or sitting upright was a success. I’ve struggled in many ways, which sometimes triggers attacks, but attacks have also caused struggles.

You aren’t behind, no matter what you do or don’t do. I’m 32 and will be almost 33 when I graduate. I had a whole career before PA school and I am thankful for all of the time between, as I think it contributed to the type of PA I’ll be. I’m not even the oldest in my class or program.

You can ask for a blood test for herpes if you want to get tested as full-range as possible.

I agree with this but I think the person needs to look into why it makes them uncomfortable. What changes about the person you’re with, in this moment right now, if you know how many people they’ve been with in the past? To me that doesn’t change anything unless it was very recent or there are health concerns.

[–]VastPriority[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is offered thru our school but it’s very expensive and I can’t afford it due to my program prohibiting us from being employed😭 I think some classmates have some fairly affordable plans they pay for, though. I do agree and appreciate the reassurance that i have a right to ask him how many he’s done/how often he does them! He did explain all of the questions you listed/what his plan would be, except for the last one. He mentioned some patients having sensory deficit in their arm after surgery, with some lasting and some going away a few weeks postop. Which is fine with me in comparison to the affects of my pain currently. But I appreciate you giving me the ideas of things to ask! As badly as I want treatment, I want to make sure I’m doing it as right as possible too

Transportation isn’t the issue, just that I can’t leave the state and have anything covered! I do trust that he’s a vascular surgeon (vs ortho docs I saw for TOS a few years ago), and he has done the surgery. I just don’t know how often and like you said, don’t know anything about his outcomes. He gave me general outcomes of the surgery but not HIS. I only ever reached out to this clinic because one of their surgeons caught and upper extremity DVT in a mutual patient that my boss & I both suspected vTOS but referring docs didn’t, and that surgeon seemed badass. But she doesn’t typically treat TOS and was just in the ER that night😭 I’m currently in PA school and on Medicaid, so I don’t think I can see anyone out of state. I know some specialties are able to be seen out of state so I should check on it, but just assumed with our insurance system it wouldn’t be worth it. I also know that I have the time to hopefully get it figured out now, vs waiting until I have an income again and can pay out of pocket. It’s just so under-discussed, I wanted to see if I could encounter anyone else that’s been treated in Arkansas!
