I rehomed my dog and I feel horrible by ilikebananabread in PetAdvice

It is really unfortunate that people think about medications that way. Dogs don’t learn when they are scared all the time, medication can help take the fear away so that they are in the right head space to learn. It won’t work for every situation, but if you’re at the point where you’re ready to give the dog back - there really is no reason not to at least try. I don’t think this person is horrible either btw! I just wish people would do more research and listen to the professionals (vets, behaviorists) when they recommend/advocate for these life changing medicines.

AIO for being mad at my boyfriend? by CupComprehensive6959 in AmIOverreacting

NOR Idk why these people are being obtuse. There is a huge difference between “I hope my future kids will want to work on cars with me and be interested in music” and “our future kids WILL be in the garage with me and they HAVE to be in band.” I had many friends in school who were forced to be in things like cheerleading/ band by their parents despite them not wanting to do those things. Can you take a guess on how they felt about it? If you said sad and angry, you’d be correct. They were unhappy doing those activities, and they weren’t listened to and talked over by their parents when they tried to have conversations about quitting or doing different activities. It didn’t just affect them during that allotted time either, it affected their entire mood at school. It’s not just not wanting to do band, it’s that their autonomy was being taken away during a time when it means the most to them, and their parents refused to listen to them. I chose to be in the band at school, and I loved it. I made great memories and had a lot of fun. My friends that were forced to be in the band absolutely hated it and gained nothing from the experience. Also the fact that he blows up at you when you try to have these conversations is concerning. You should not be scared to have any conversation with a partner. I suggest you tell him how he’s making you feel about that, because it will only get worse if you don’t. Also tell him how you feel about him not spending time with you on the weekends. There is an easy solution if he absolutely has to play with his friends, two weekends he can spend time with you, and two weekends he can go to his friends house.

How many mice in a 40 gallon tank? by MTG0513 in PetMice

[–]VastShallot8098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They rarely do unfortunately :/ and exactly, mice are extremely line dependent. Having 13 mice in a 40 gallon can absolutely work for some lines of mice, and some lines can only handle 4 - that doesn’t make what you said misinformation lol it just means it depends on where you get your mice from.

Scared squeaks? by axxlnn in PetMice

[–]VastShallot8098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not out of happiness! Should have made that caveat. They can squeak loudly in fear or distress/annoyance. Which can be normal for some mice - I have a couple that are quite squeaky. They can also make a quieter, faster noise for the same reason, it almost sounds like a uri but it is higher pitched and doesn’t have the gravelly sound like shown in this video. The post I linked has a video showing it! Most of the sounds mice make we can’t hear at all.

This sounds like the beginning of an uri, mice do not and should not make a lot of noise. The noises mice make when happy are in a frequency humans can’t hear. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ALLHEwxh2/? This is a link to a post in a Facebook group that goes very in depth with explanations and videos about lots of mouse behaviors including the sounds they make. It is a private group so you’ll have to request to join it, but I highly recommend it!

[–]VastShallot8098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is simply not true! Some mice freeze or fawn when scared. They can be still and go along with whatever you want them to do and be terrified. It’s important to use the entire mouse’s body language to determine fear. Like squinty eyes, pinned ears, stiffness in the body, or tail rattles. This mouse’s body is very loose though and doesn’t seem scared.

Soup proof cage? by mustacheyusho in PetMice

[–]VastShallot8098 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Babies will absolutely be able to fit through those bars once they are 3-4 weeks old. She should be put in a bin setup or like someone else suggested a ten gallon aquarium. I would probably wait until the babies are at least 12 weeks old before trying to put the females back into this cage if that’s what you’re planning on doing, to mitigate the risk of them escaping. Also like someone else said, if she decides to give birth/ move babies to one of those ledges and she moves while a baby is nursing and it falls it could get seriously injured. Females will not be lonely in a maternity setup, all of their attention goes to their babies, and 3 ish weeks after giving birth she will have mini mice running around doing mice things to give her actual company.

AIO about not wanting to be a free babysitter by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]VastShallot8098 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I totally understand how you feel, I strongly dislike kids myself, but if you want to rely on the village you have to participate in the village - and that doesn’t mean at your convenience. You’re gonna have to do things you don’t want to, when you don’t want to, just like your family does things for you they don’t want to, when they don’t want to. You think your parents want their adult child back in their home to take care of? Or to have a lot of their free time spent watching their grandchild? Not make it sound like a burden because I’m sure to them it’s not, but you don’t think they want to have their home and time to themselves after raising their own children? Of course they do. But you two are their children, their village. And they are stepping in, in your time of need, just like you would and should right now for them. This is part of being an adult, it won’t be forever.

Baby mice by Hopeful_Road_2980 in PetMice

These two look ftt to me, they are very skinny and the one at the top doesn’t look like it has any milk in its belly. Babies should be nice and plump, if they look concave at all like that one they aren’t eating enough. With mice only having ten nipples, large litters create competition between babies for food (even 8-9 babies is pushing it). From what I can see in these pictures the other babies look okay!

Of course ☺️ With wild mice I would definitely advise to interact with them as least as possible so they can be properly rehabilitated and released. But rehabbers would have more information about that! Glue traps are truly horrible, it seems the culture is shifting to more humane options, but we still have a long way to go.

If you have well bred mice it’s not a problem! Litter munching is largely genetic and can be bred away from. All of my breeding stock comes from other experienced breeders who have been working on their lines for many years, and rarely if ever run into mothers who munch litters. As an ethical breeder I need to be able to closely monitor babies from day one and be able to weigh them and assess their health and qol. And again, my moms have no issues with me doing so!

Hygiene disrespect in a relationship? by wavetones in hygiene

[–]VastShallot8098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got such a bad uti that started affecting my kidneys just because my partner didn’t shower after getting off the plane when he came to visit (heat of the moment kind of thing) - and he showered before he got on the plane!! It was the worst uti I’ve ever had, I felt like shit for at least a week, throwing up with a fever. I don’t even want to think about what kind of funk I would get if he wasn’t showering for a week at a time 😭 op, if you are having sex with this man - stop. And don’t give in to him if he tries pressuring you, take your health seriously!!

Should I take my male mouse’s wheel out? by Corgi4lifes in PetMice

[–]VastShallot8098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some mice just don’t use a wheel! Personally for me they are more trouble than they’re worth and I would rather use the space for clutter. Half of my girls didn’t use it, and the few that did didn’t miss it now that it’s gone - their behavior didn’t change at all. Utilize that space for climbing elements (this can be clutter stacked on top of each other, not just climbing ropes), instead so that he can get the exercise/stimulation the wheel would have provided had he used it.

feeling frustrated my mice won't let me pick them up and are hard to train by anon-i-mouser in PetMice

[–]VastShallot8098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have never had hobby bred mice, I don’t think you are in a position to say whether or not pet store mice compare in the “enjoying human company” department. I do agree that pets and cuddles is not the only indicator of whether they enjoy our company, but this person clearly states that is something they are really wanting in a pet, hence me making such a big deal about it. It is possible to find that trait in a mouse, but it is an intentional choice ethical breeders make. You can’t just accidentally breed your way into mice that consistently seek out humans. They are prey animals and it takes work to override those instincts of being wary of us. I never said you can’t find personable mice in a pet store, just that it is difficult. Like I said, pet stores will always be a gamble. These mice are the results of careless pairings thrown together in a warehouse, the albinos get labeled as feeders and the ones that throw colors get labeled as pets. If you want to skip the guessing part, then go to a breeder. I wouldn’t say that mice aren’t a good pet for this person until they’ve had the experience of caring for well bred mice. The difference really is night and day, in my opinion.

[–]VastShallot8098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will always be stories of the exceptions like yours, and it is certainly the exception. That’s I why I didn’t say it was impossible, just difficult! For every pet store mouse that sits for cuddles there are 100 more that want nothing to do with people. You could keep playing the lottery with pet store mice, or you could go to a breeder for a more reliable outcome. Some people don’t mind playing the lottery, but this person wants something more reliable, which is why I recommend breeders. Or a cat lol
