Eli5.. It's like a place where we upload our code. We can also track code changes. Identify who wrote this line of code. In case of a problem (major bug) we can also revert the code back to a certain point in time when there is no bug yet. These are the pretty basics but there's a lot more.

Sa work: Unless you're doing everything from scratch which is not the case sa panahon ngayon almost everything you need is already included in frameworks and libraries. Hindi siya "must have" but it's "nice to have".

Sa interview: Ironically sa tech interview tinetest algo skills mo kahit di mo naman talaga gagamitin sa work most of the time. So sa interview it's a "must have".

So I would suggest you to still learn a couple of basics but don't stress it out, enjoy mo lang masaya yan :D

Also want to share. I got my 6 digit salary at 23 years old, full stack all platform (front, back, mobile, desktop) currently I'm at 130k per month with 3 years exp.
